In the last few days, more than 13 thousand passengers canceled the journey in view of the late temperatures of the national capital and the surrounding areas due to very low temperatures and fog. By Wednesday, 13,412 passengers had canceled their tickets. Trains coming from distant places like Duronto, Rajdhani, Malda, New Delhi, Farakka Express, Mumbai, Amritsar Express are in bad shape.

Along with Delhi, fog has been engulfed in many areas of Punjab on Friday morning. Apart from this, dense fog enveloped some areas of Rajasthan, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh and Tripura.

These trains are running late

The Jabalpur Nizamuddin Mahakoshal Express is running late by 5 hours. The Nanded Amritsar Sachkhand Express is running 6 hours late. Lokmanya Tilak-Haridwar Express (5 hours late). Vasco-Nizamuddin-Goa Express (2 hours late), Chennai-New Delhi GT Express (02.30 hours late), Rewa-Anand Vihar Reva Express (2 hours late), Bhubaneswar-New Delhi Rajdhani (3 hours late), Howrah- New Delhi Purva Express (3 hours late), Bhagalpur Anandvihar Vikramshila Express (2 hours late).

Pollution in Delhi at critical level

At the same time, the pollution situation in Delhi also remains serious. According to data from Delhi Pollution Control Board, AQI 418 was recorded in Anand Vihar which falls in the serious category. There was AQI 372 in RKpuram which falls in the ‘very poor’ category. At the same time, AQI 429 (Gambhir) was recorded in Rohini.

Thirty trains are running late due to low visibility. Though no flights have been cancelled, but three flights to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International airport have been diverted. The airport authorities have asked the air passengers to contact their respective airlines for flight updates. Flights are operating at the airport under CAT III B conditions, which means that the runway visual range (RVR) is between 50 metres and 175 metres.

The temperature this morning fell to 2.2 degree Celsius from 2.8 degree Celsius on Sunday, according to the monitoring unit on south Delhi’s Lodhi Road.

The air quality in the national capital is very bad with the Anand Vihar observatory recording air quality index (AQI) of 462 and the Okhla Phase-2 centre reporting an AQI of 494.

Six people, including two children, were killed when their car skidded off the road and fell into a canal in Greater Noida, apparently due to fog, the police said this morning.

At Delhi airport, CAT III B compliant aircraft are currently able to land using instrument landing system or ILS, officials said. The airlines have asked people to stay in touch for updated flight information. Three flights have been diverted so far.

Since December 14, the national capital has been experiencing “severe cold days” with the average minimum temperature on Sunday morning being recorded at 3.4 degrees Celsius, four notches below what is considered normal for this time of the year.

The mean temperature for December 2019 till Sunday was 19.07 degrees Celsius and it is “most likely to become second coldest December since 1901”, behind 17.3 degrees Celsius in December 1997, the Met department said.

Humidity levels oscillated between 64 per cent to 100 per cent, it added.

For Monday, the weatherman had predicted dense fog in the morning with cold day at a few places in Delhi-National Capital Region (NCR).

The IMD said that the night temperature on Tuesday touched nearly 9 degree Celsius.

On Tuesday, the difference between the maximum and the minimum temperature dipped to 1.8 degrees, making the day the coldest since 1997. The maximum temperature was 12.2 degree Celsius while the minimum temperature on Tuesday was recorded 10.4 degree Celsius.

“Today (Wednesday) similar conditions are likely to prevail. The low cloud cover will not allow sunlight to reach the ground and keep the day cold,” said Kuldeep Srivastava head of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) regional weather forecasting centre.

Scientists also warned that an impending western disturbance on December 18 will bring rain and snowfall in many of states in north India, and its impact will bring down the temperature in Delhi further.

 It seems that the crop residue burning in the nearby states of Punjab and Haryana are contributing to polluting the air. At around 8:30 am, the overall AQI in Delhi docked up at 309.

An AQI between 0 and 50 is considered ‘good’, 51 and 100 ‘satisfactory’, 101 and 200 ‘moderate’, 201 and 300 ‘poor’, 301 and 400 ‘very poor’, and 401 and 500 ‘severe’.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has shared an image from NASA showing large-scale stubble burning in adjoining states. Sharing the images, the Delhi government said: “The latest image from NASA shows large-scale crop residue burning in states surrounding Delhi.”

The image showed stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana, along with other areas.The Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party government has blamed these stubble burning activity.

From the past one week, the air quality of the national capital has seen constantly decreasing. The smog level will rise, particularly after the Diwali festival. The situation may begin to worsen during the November start as that will be peak time for burning .
