HyNet Core Infrastructure Gets Green Light from the UK Government; Essar Energy Transition (EET) to Play Anchor Role

Bengaluru, 25 April 2025 – Essar Energy Transition (“EET”) congratulates Eni and the UK Government on achieving financial close on the core carbon transport and storage project of the HyNet Industrial Cluster (the Liverpool Bay CCS). We are delighted that Eni’s construction phase will now begin on the infrastructure enabling HyNet; vital to massive reductions in carbon emissions and enabling much needed investment, protecting and growing jobs and industries across North West England and North Wales.

EET’s Hydrogen Production Plant (HPP1) project is one of the four initial projects that will provide carbon to this infrastructure for permanent storage. HPP1 is expected to be the UK’s first large scale low-carbon hydrogen production plant with capacity of 350MW and capturing some 600,000 tonnes of CO2 per annum – equivalent to taking 125,000 cars off the road.

EET’s Stanlow Manufacturing Complex is located at the heart of HyNet, anchored by the EET Fuels’ refinery which is a major offtake and enabler of HPP1. EET’s projects, supported by today’s announcement, are transforming Stanlow into a world-leading energy transition hub that can capture around 2 million tonnes of carbon from the refinery through its wider decarbonisation programme, which includes electrification and carbon capture, as well as further Hydrogen Production Plant (HPP2) and development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF). Stanlow is also expected to play a key role in enabling other low-carbon high tech businesses to benefit from the local hydrogen production and carbon infrastructure.

Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of Essar Energy Transition, said: “Congratulations to Eni and the UK government on reaching this milestone today. The HyNet CO2 pipeline is a game-changer for industry in the North West and confirms the unique positioning of our Stanlow Manufacturing Complex as an energy transition hub.

“This presents huge opportunities for the future growth of North West businesses and ensures Stanlow can pursue its goal of being one of Europe’s leading decarbonised refineries, providing the UK with fuel security for many years.”

Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, added: “We are very proud of the position that EET Hydrogen’s HPP1 project has as an anchor project in HyNet. Today’s announcement provides great momentum as we progress towards the construction phase of our flagship project.”

Bengaluru, March 26, 2025– Essar Energy Transition’s EET Fuels (the trading name of Essar Oil (UK) Ltd), a leading force in the UK’s energy transition and aviation fuel supply, is pleased to announce the signing of agreements to supply jet fuel to two additional major UK airports. This expansion elevates EET Fuels’ total network to nine airports across the UK, marking a significant milestone in its mission to bolster energy security and support the aviation industry’s growth.

Deepak Maheshwari, Chief Executive Officer at EET Fuels, said:

“This milestone underscores EET Fuels’ commitment to strengthening the UK’s aviation fuel network while advancing our energy transition strategy. By expanding our supply footprint to nine key airports, we are not only enhancing fuel security and reliability for our airline partners but also reinforcing our role as a leader in the UK’s journey towards a low-carbon future.”

Ellese Munnerley Aviation Account Manager of EET Fuels said:

“We’re delighted to have secured two new airport customers. This expansion brings our EET Fuels supply network of UK airports to nine, reinforcing our commitment to delivering reliable, high-quality fuel solutions to our airline partners. It allows us to extend our network coverage to our valuable airline customers while the positioning of the airports also shows our ability to deliver a resilient fuel supply across the UK.”

Operating from the Stanlow Refinery in Ellesmere Port, EET Fuels is one of the UK’s largest producers of jet fuel, also supplying approximately 16% of the nation’s road transport fuels and playing a pivotal role in the North West’s aviation industry. This latest achievement builds on previous successes, including supply agreements with Manchester, Birmingham, London Stansted, Newcastle, Liverpool, Cardiff, and Leeds airports, bringing the company closer to its vision of a comprehensive and resilient UK aviation fuel network.

With a legacy of reliability and innovation, EET Fuels continues to strengthen its partnerships with leading commercial airlines, ensuring seamless wing-tip supply and operational excellence. EET Fuels serves some of the most prominent names in global aviation – from short haul trips to Europe to large international carriers, and some of the largest cargo carriers in the world.

This expansion is in line with EET Fuels’ strategy to integrate across the value chain by placing refined jet molecules produced at its Stanlow refinery directly into the demand centres where these are consumed. It also aligns with EET’s broader ambitions to lead the UK’s energy transition.

Essar Energy Transition is investing heavily in low-carbon solutions. These efforts are part of a $2.4 billion investment in the Stanlow site, with plans to become the leading low carbon process refinery, through the delivery of a 95% reduction in carbon emissions, and to develop Stanlow into an energy transition hub, including industrial carbon capture, low carbon hydrogen production and Europe’s first hydrogen-fuelled combined heat and power plant.

Bengaluru: 4th October 2024: Essar Energy Transition (“EET”) welcomes today’s announcement by the UK Government confirming its support of the HyNet cluster.

EET Hydrogen, a division of EET, is developing the first large scale, low carbon hydrogen production hub in the UK at its site in Stanlow. This hub will produce 1,350 MW of hydrogen capacity in total and capture around 2.5 million tonnes of carbon per annum – equivalent to taking 1.1 million cars off the roads.

The EET Hydrogen hub will enable regional industrial and power generation businesses to decarbonise by switching from fossil fuels to low carbon energy. The low carbon hydrogen will be used locally by EET Fuels’ Stanlow refinery and other major manufacturers in the region, including Encirc, Pilkington and Tata Chemicals to create the first low carbon refining operations, glass and chemicals manufacturing sites in the world. The EET Hydrogen hub will help to secure and grow vital industries, create jobs and unlock billions of pounds of related investment.

EET Hydrogen will develop the hydrogen hub in two phases, with the first plant (HPP1) at 350MW capacity, the second (HPP2) at 1,000MW capacity and an overall target capacity of 4,000MW+ by 2030. EET Hydrogen expects to begin construction of HPP1 in 2025, with low carbon hydrogen produced at the site by 2028.

Tony Fountain, Managing Partner of EET said: “Fantastic to see the Government moving forward with the HyNet cluster, at the heart of which is our first low carbon hydrogen production plant at Stanlow, creating jobs and growth in the North West. Now that Government support is confirmed, we look forward to taking our final investment decision and starting construction in 2025”

Joe Seifert, CEO of EET Hydrogen, added: “Today’s announcement from Government represents a critical moment in the UK’s hydrogen industry. The North West is once again leading global industry into a new era – producing critical everyday items but without the carbon impact. This investment will help to secure and grow jobs in our manufacturing heartlands for generations to come”
