Mumbai, June 5, 2026: As the world prepares to mark World Environment Day on June 5, Mr. Rajesh Gupta, Founder and Managing Director of Recyclekaro, India’s leading end-to-end lithium-ion battery and e-waste recycling enterprise, has issued a clarion call for a nationwide commitment to responsible electronic waste disposal. In a statement released today, Mr. Gupta urged citizens, policymakers and industry to recognize that the planet’s accelerating electrification, driven by the proliferation of artificial intelligence, data centres, connected devices and electric vehicles, is generating a waste stream whose scale and complexity will dwarf anything humanity has managed before.

“The world is becoming more electronic by the day. Every new AI model, every new connected device, every electric vehicle on the road adds to a mountain of e-waste that is growing faster than our capacity to handle it responsibly. On this World Environment Day, I urge every Indian to take a simple but profound pledge: to never let an old phone, a spent battery or a discarded appliance end up in a landfill or with an informal scrap dealer. These are not just waste. They are concentrated deposits of lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements, minerals that are fundamental to our nation’s energy security, our digital infrastructure and our industrial future,” Mr. Gupta said.

Mr. Gupta, whose company operates one of India’s largest lithium-ion battery recycling facilities with technology that achieves over 95 percent recovery efficiency and 98 percent purity in extracted materials, pointed to the enormous strategic opportunity embedded in the country’s waste stream. “When we irresponsibly discard e-waste, we are not just harming the planet, we are throwing away the very building blocks of nation building. The critical minerals locked inside old batteries and circuit boards can reduce our dependence on imports, strengthen our manufacturing base and power our green transition. But when they are burnt in open yards or dissolved in acid by unregulated operators, they poison our soil, contaminate our groundwater and enter our food chain. The damage is irreparable and cumulative,” he warned.

Addressing India’s youth directly, Mr. Gupta made a case for redirecting entrepreneurial energy towards hard industries. “Our young generation is extraordinarily talented, but too much of that talent flows into software, apps and services. We need builders. We need young Indians to look at critical mineral recycling, sustainable mining and electronics manufacturing not as legacy industries but as the frontiers of the next economy. These are sectors where intellectual challenge meets national purpose. A venture that figures out how to extract battery-grade lithium from black mass at scale is solving a problem as complex and as valuable as anything in Silicon Valley,” he said.

The imperative for formalising and scaling the e-waste recycling sector has never been more urgent. India generates over 1.7 million tonnes of e-waste annually, a figure that is projected to cross 5 million tonnes by 2030 as digital penetration deepens and device lifecycles shorten. Yet barely 30 percent of this volume is processed through formal, environmentally sound channels. The remainder flows into the informal sector, where crude extraction methods recover only a small fraction of valuable materials while releasing toxic heavy metals into the environment. The Union Cabinet’s Rs 1,500 crore incentive scheme under the National Critical Mineral Mission is designed to change this equation, but policy alone cannot solve the collection challenge. Without a cultural shift in how citizens dispose of their electronics, the most sophisticated recycling plants will run dry of feedstock while the waste continues to poison the land.

“World Environment Day is not a celebration. It is a reminder that the planet’s patience is finite. The age of AI and ubiquitous electronics is not something that is coming. It is already here. Every Indian who owns a phone, a laptop, an EV is part of this story. The only question is whether we will be responsible authors of it or careless spectators to the damage it leaves behind. The pledge to recycle responsibly is among the most consequential commitments a citizen can make in 2026,” Mr. Gupta concluded.

Field visit to Someshwara Beach, Pachanady and Kadeshwalya regions, and Bantwal MRF marks an early milestone in translating a three-year programme into measurable on-ground impact

Mangaluru, 3 June 2026: Real estate builds cities. But cities exist within ecosystems, and for too long, the industry has taken more than it has returned. The Karnataka Zero Waste Initiative is Sattva Group’s attempt to change that equation. On 23 May, Shivam Agarwal, Vice President, Strategy, Sattva Group, and Aditya Siroya, Co-Founder and Advisor, rePurpose Global, led a full-day field visit across Someshwara Beach, Pachanady and Kadeshwalya, and the Bantwal Material Recovery Facility, walking the coastline that this programme has committed to restore.

Launched on Earth Day 2026 in partnership with Knowledge Realty Trust, the initiative is a three-year commitment to recover 3.5–4.5 million kilograms of waste. It will bring 80,000 households into formal waste management systems, some of them for the very first time, reduce plastic leakage across 50 coastal villages, and support 200 waste workers; predominantly women with dignified livelihoods and skills for the future.

The day began at Someshwara Beach. Plastic accounts for a disproportionate share of what washes up on Karnataka’s shores, a problem that is visible, chronic, and solvable. Shivam and Aditya joined approximately 40 community volunteers in a direct clean-up effort, recovering over 250 kilograms of waste in a single drive.

Shivam Agarwal, Vice President – Strategy, Sattva Group, said “You can talk about sustainability in boardrooms and earnings calls. But standing on a beach, collecting plastic with forty people who live here that’s where it becomes real. This is where the work happens, and this is where we intend to show up.”

The visit then moved through Kadeshwalya village, where community representatives walked the team through household waste collection systems and segregation practices already in place. The team also assessed infrastructure needs along the Netravathi river, a critical intervention point before plastic reaches the sea. The day concluded at the Bantwal MRF, where the team spent time with waste workers who are the backbone of the entire system.

Jiji Thomas, Head – ESG & Sustainability, Knowledge Realty Trust, said “At Knowledge Realty Trust, we are committed to creating value that extends beyond our buildings and into the communities around us. The outcomes achieved through the first phase of the Repurpose Initiative demonstrate how collaborative action can drive meaningful environmental and social impact. We are encouraged by the progress made and remain committed to supporting initiatives that create cleaner, more sustainable communities for the future.”

The numbers from the initiative’s first months tell a clear story: over 1.5 lakh kilograms of dry waste recovered, more than 50,000 kilograms of low-value plastic ethically processed, 20 waste workers now supported, and active engagement with 30+ village gram panchayats with critical backing from the Dakshina Kannada Zila Panchayat and Mangala Resource Management.

Aditya Siroya, Co-Founder and Advisor, rePurpose Global, added “What we saw today reinforced both the scale of the challenge and the importance of building solutions designed to last. It’s encouraging to see businesses like Sattva stepping forward with real ambition — not just commitments on paper, but investment in systems that can scale. Through this partnership, we’re not only reducing plastic leakage locally; we’re building a model for environmental leadership that can extend far beyond Karnataka.”

By the end of 2026, the Karnataka Zero Waste Initiative aims to recover over 10 lakh kilograms of dry waste including 4 lakh kilograms of plastic, improve livelihoods for 60 waste workers, and run awareness and capacity-building programmes across at least 15 villages in Dakshina Kannada.

Karnataka has 320 kilometres of coastline. This is where the work begins.

Marks International Biodiversity Day 2026 with ecological restoration, awareness programs and marine biodiversity engagement

29th May 2026 | Mumbai, India: Reinforcing its long-standing commitment towards environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation, Tata Chemicals Ltd., Mithapur, along with the Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD), undertook a series of biodiversity-focused initiatives across the Okhamandal region to mark International Biodiversity Day 2026. Aligned with this year’s global theme, “Acting locally for global impact”, the initiatives highlighted the importance of community participation, ecological restoration, biodiversity awareness, and marine conservation in protecting fragile ecosystems and local habitats.

Initiative 1: Ecological Restoration & Biodiversity Conservation at Gyan Sagar Embankment

One of the key highlights of the initiative was the biodiversity conservation project developed along the lime embankment on the Gyan Sagar (Sagar Dam) road in Mithapur. What began nearly three years ago as an effort to reclaim saline wasteland has today evolved into a thriving biodiversity-rich ecosystem. Developed using waste lime instead of conventional soil, the site has been transformed through extensive plantation efforts aimed at creating a sustainable green habitat. Building on the success of the initiative, Tata Chemicals Ltd. (TCL) has further expanded the plantation area by an additional 750 metres with a width of 50 metres to strengthen biodiversity conservation and community participation.

Taking into consideration the bird species and local wildlife found in Mithapur and the Okhamandal region, TCL developed three distinct plantation zones at the site — Piloo Plantation Plot, Miyawaki Forest, and Van Kavach Forest. Today, the restored habitat supports nearly 80 bird species along with wildlife such as foxes and other native animals. The site also attracts migratory birds including Eurasian Hobby, Hypocolius, and Harriers during the winter months, gradually emerging as an important ecological refuge for biodiversity conservation in the region.

Initiative 2: Biodiversity Awareness & Field Orientation Program

As part of the International Biodiversity Day celebrations, Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD) also organized biodiversity awareness and field orientation programs on May 21 and 22, 2026. A total of 56 volunteers, including Tata Chemicals employees, retired employees, and their family members, participated in the initiative.

The sessions focused on creating awareness around biodiversity conservation, ecological balance, environmental sustainability, and the challenges contributing to biodiversity loss in the Okhamandal region. Following the awareness sessions, volunteers participated in a field-based biodiversity survey exercise at Mojap village for the study and documentation of local flora and fauna.

Initiative 3: World Turtle Day & Marine Biodiversity Awareness Initiative

Further strengthening its environmental conservation efforts, Tata Chemicals’ Project Sahajeevan — a key CSR and community development initiative implemented in association with TCSRD organized a World Turtle Day Celebration and Volunteer Orientation Program at Mithapur Beach on May 23, 2026. Focused on promoting marine biodiversity conservation, coastal ecosystem protection, and community participation, the initiative aimed to spread awareness about sea turtles, fragile marine habitats, and the importance of preserving coastal biodiversity across the Okhamandal region.

The program brought together volunteers, environmental enthusiasts, and local community members for awareness talks and orientation activities aimed at encouraging citizen participation in marine biodiversity exploration and coastal conservation efforts. The initiative also highlighted the importance of collective action in safeguarding marine ecosystems and promoting long-term environmental sustainability for future generations.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rino Raj, Vice President and Plant Head, Mithapur, said, “The increasing presence of birds nesting, including migratory species and raptors, pollinators, and other native wildlife in the restored habitats around Mithapur reflects the positive impact of sustained ecological efforts. These initiatives demonstrate how local action and community participation can contribute meaningfully towards global biodiversity conservation goals.”

Mr. Chintan Joshi, Head of Corporate Advocacy, Communications and CSR, Tata Chemicals spokesperson added, “At Tata Chemicals, sustainability and biodiversity conservation remain integral to our community engagement philosophy. Through these initiatives, we are not only restoring ecosystems but also building awareness and encouraging collective participation towards environmental stewardship and long-term ecological sustainability.”

Over the years, Tata Chemicals and TCSRD have continued to work closely with local communities, environmental groups, employees, and volunteers to strengthen sustainable development practices and promote conservation-driven community engagement across the Okhamandal region.

Mumbai, 18th February 2026: Blue Dart Express Ltd., South Asia’s premier express air and integrated transportation and distribution company, today announced a significant sustainability milestone — the successful plantation of 1 million trees across India, reinforcing its long-term commitment to climate action and community empowerment.

The pan-India initiative has been implemented over the years with a clear dual purpose. It contributes to carbon sequestration and ecosystem restoration, while also creating sustainable income opportunities for farmers. At maturity, the 1 million trees are estimated to sequester approximately 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year, strengthening climate resilience and supporting India’s broader environmental goals.

Beyond carbon impact, the project plays a vital role in restoring ecological balance. The plantations improve soil fertility, prevent erosion, enhance water retention, and contribute to better air quality by absorbing pollutants and generating oxygen. By stabilising local microclimates and supporting improved water cycles, the initiative enhances long-term environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the initiative aligns closely with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 15 (Life on Land), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 2 (Zero Hunger).

Commenting on the milestone, Balfour Manuel, Managing Director, said: “Reaching the milestone of one million trees planted is a significant step in our commitment to supporting India’s carbon reduction and climate resilience goals. As one of the country’s largest logistics networks, we recognise our responsibility in contributing to a low-carbon future. Expanding green cover at scale not only supports national decarbonisation ambitions but also strengthens long-term environmental sustainability. Equally important, our initiative has strengthened rural livelihoods by equipping farmers with sustainable practices and long-term income opportunities. For us, climate action must be measurable, inclusive, and aligned with India’s broader ambition of building a resilient, sustainable economy.”

A key differentiator of the programme is its strong focus on farmer capacity building. Beneficiaries receive structured training on tree plantation, maintenance, organic farming practices, mulching, pruning, pest control, and water conservation techniques. Demonstration plots and workshops enable hands-on learning, ensuring sustainable outcomes and long-term livelihood benefits. This milestone reflects Blue Dart’s continued efforts to integrate environmental responsibility with inclusive growth by strengthening ecosystems, supporting communities, and contributing meaningfully to a greener future.

NEW DELHI. Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd. (HUDCO) launched a significant CSR project aimed at transforming the 1,700-acre National Security Guard (NSG) Campus in Manesar into a model of environmental sustainability. Following an MoU signed on January 21, the initiative introduces a modern, integrated system capable of processing 5–7 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, featuring a 2-tonne biogas plant that will convert organic waste from residential blocks and 52 canteens into cooking fuel. By streamlining door-to-door collection, scientific segregation, and recycling, the project—implemented by Blue Planet Environmental Solutions—is expected to prevent up to 2,000 tonnes of waste from reaching landfills annually, reinforcing HUDCO’s commitment to impactful CSR and the NSG’s role in leading by example through future-ready, eco-friendly infrastructure.
