SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has been steadfastly pursuing its commitment towards environmental conservation through its annual Mass Tree Plantation programme, transforming vast stretches of land in and around Rourkela into lush green spaces. With the plantation of more than 52 lakh trees over the years through mass plantation drives and other afforestation initiatives, RSP has played a pivotal role in creating a green girdle around the city.

The annual Mass Tree Plantation programme, launched in 2007, has become one of RSP’s most significant environmental initiatives. Every year, a new site is identified and developed into a green zone with active participation from employees, their family members, school students, voluntary organisations and local residents.

Beginning with Ispat Udyan on NIT Road in Sector-2 in 2007, the initiative has grown steadily over the years with the development of several green spaces across the Steel City. These include Ispat Airport Udyan near Airport, Ispat Fruit Garden at Green Park, Sec-8, Ispat Upavan at Airport Road, Ispat Van Vatika near ILS School, Sec-8, Ispat Prakriti Udyan at Sec-6, Ispat Van Vihar near Rourkela House, Ispat Paryavaran Udyan near Deepika Mahila Jagruti Sansthan Sec-2, Ispat Harit Udyan behind Rourkela House, Sec-20, Ispat Vanasthal near Electrical Sub-station Sec-7, Ispat Banani near NAC School Sec-16, Ispat Vriksha Udyan near Ispat Stadium, Ispat Nandan Vihar, Sec-18, Ispat Phal Udyan, Sec-8, Ispat Aranya Vatika, Bethani Church Road, Sec-20, Ispat Vriksha Vihar, Sec-1, Ispat Aranya Udyan, Sec-20 and Ispat Sabuja Van at Gopaltoli, Jagda.

These plantations have not only enhanced the city’s green cover but have also contributed significantly towards improving air quality, conserving biodiversity, mitigating the impact of climate change and creating healthier public spaces for the community.

The Mass Tree Plantation programme reflects RSP’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. By consistently expanding green cover year after year, RSP continues to reinforce its vision of balancing industrial growth with ecological responsibility, ensuring a greener and healthier future for generations to come.

Bengaluru, June 04, 2026: The International Institute of Information Technology Bangalore (IIIT-B) celebrated World Environment Day with a tree plantation drive at its extended campus on Hosa Road. This event witnessed participation from students, faculty and staff members, reinforcing the institute’s long-standing commitment to ecological conservation.

Aligned to this year’s theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”, the initiative highlighted the significance of collective action in addressing climate challenges and building resilient communities for upcoming generations. The institute recognizes the need to create a greener and more sustainable future through initiatives such as tree plantation drives, maintaining green spaces, and promoting eco-friendly practices across the campus. The green initiatives of IIIT-B are measurable, such as solar generation, wastewater recycling, segregation systems, biodiversity metrics, which gives the institute’s effort more credibility and seriousness.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Debabrata Das, Director, IIIT-Bangalore said, “Every year we plant trees and put efforts into making our campus greener. More than planting trees, we focus on how they can be sustained in this era of rising temperatures. Every student must take responsibility for the plant they have planted. When we lose a plant, it feels like losing a member of the family.”

Over the years, IIIT-B has consistently worked towards maintaining a green and sustainable campus and has received several recognitions for its environmental initiatives. The institute was honoured with the International Green University Award in 2023, 2024, and 2025 at the NYC Green School Conferences held in New York, USA. IIIT-B also received Electronics City Industrial Township Authority (ELCITA) Gold Award in Sustainability along with awards for Biodiversity Management and Social Welfare & Community Service. ELCITA, adjudged IIIT-Bangalore with Platinum Ranking in a greening competition for campuses in the city. The International Institute of Waste Management (IIWM) also rated the IIIT-Bangalore campus with a Green Rating for the year 2021-22.

As a premier educational institution, IIIT-B not only focuses on academic excellence and technological innovation but also encourages students to understand their role in protecting the environment. Through various green initiatives and awareness activities, the institute inspires students to contribute towards building a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable society.
