Shimla. Shri Rajesh Kumar Chandel has officially assumed charge as Director (Projects) of SJVN, a prominent Navratna CPSE, receiving warm congratulations from CMD Shri Bhupender Gupta, Director (Personnel) Shri Ajay Kumar Sharma, and other senior officials.

Bringing over 35 years of robust power sector experience with a core specialization in hydro power, Shri Chandel has a proven track record in project conceptualization, strategic planning, execution, monitoring, and international coordination across India, Nepal, and Bhutan.

His distinguished career includes serving as OSD to the CMD, heading major wholly owned subsidiaries in Nepal to oversee the 900 MW Arun-3 and 669 MW Lower Arun Hydro Electric Projects, commissioning the 1020 MW project in Bhutan as MD of PHPA-II, and leading the 66 MW Dhaulasidh Project in India. An expert in handling complex engineering tasks, his technical journey highlights nearly eight years dedicated to constructing the Head Race Tunnel for the landmark 1500 MW Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station, alongside versatile corporate leadership roles since joining SJVN in 1994.

NEW DELHI: GAIL (India) Limited has delivered a robust operational and financial performance for the financial year, successfully navigating a volatile global energy market triggered by the prolonged Russia-Ukraine conflict and escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

Speaking on the company’s performance, Shri Deepak Gupta, Chairman & Managing Director, GAIL, credited the resilience to timely policy interventions by the Government of India alongside the company’s internal focus on cost discipline and supply reliability.

Infrastructure and Transmission Milestones

Despite severe global headwinds, the state-run energy major expanded its core footprint by adding approximately 2,000 km to its natural gas pipeline network. The company also recorded its highest-ever Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) transmission volume of 4.6 MMTPA (Million Metric Tonnes Per Annum).

To cater to growing domestic demand, GAIL has commenced work to double the capacity of the strategic Jamnagar-Loni LPG pipeline, scaling it up significantly to 6.5 MMTPA.

Aggressive Clean Energy & Strategy 2030 Roadmap

In alignment with India’s net-zero commitments and the company’s corporate “Strategy 2030,” GAIL is aggressively pivoting toward green energy transition. The GAIL Board has officially approved investment outlays for major renewable energy installations, which include approximately 700 MW of solar power and 178 MW of wind energy capacity.

Furthermore, the company is diving deep into the bio-fuels space, green-lighting the construction of 6 Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) plants. These plants will boast a combined production capacity of around 95 TPD (Tonnes Per Day), cementing GAIL’s focus on long-term sustainability and low-carbon growth.

Bhopal. Mr. SMC Pillai, the former Director of NTPC Limited and a visionary leader in India’s power sector, breathed his last today at 10:30 AM. He passed away peacefully at his son’s residence in Bhopal.

A distinguished Mechanical Engineer from the 1962 batch of NSS College of Engineering, Palakkad, Mr. Pillai’s career was marked by immense contributions that shaped NTPC into a global power major. Known for his technical brilliance and holistic leadership, he played a pivotal role in the organization’s growth, spanning engineering, operations, and strategic management.

Beyond his professional accolades, Mr. Pillai is remembered by his colleagues and juniors as an energetic, smiling, and innovative mentor. Many recall him as a lively presence on interview panels—specifically for the early Executive Trainee (ET) batches—where his interactions were characterized by encouragement rather than scrutiny. To many who joined NTPC under his guidance, he was not just a director but a true leader who led by example.

He is survived by his son, Dr. Prashant Pillai, who serves as the Vice Chancellor of a private dental university in Bhopal. The last rites for the departed soul will be held the day after tomorrow in Bhopal.
