The conference, supported by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (IC Section), Government of India, was inaugurated on Tuesday in the presence of H.E. Mr. Chang Jae-Bok, Hon’ble Ambassador, Republic of South Korea. Hon’ble Guests, Ms. Mercy Epao, Joint Secretary, Ministry of MSME, Government of India; Mr Piruz Khambatta, Chairman, Rasna, & Chairman, CII Task Force, Ahmedabad, and Dr Sunil Shukla, Director General, EDII, were also present at the inauguration.

The conference provided a platform for discussions on the infusion of technology in the MSME sector, bringing together key stakeholders, experts, and policymakers. The event also witnessed the release of the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor: India Report 2022-23, providing valuable insights into the entrepreneurial landscape of the country.

In his congratulatory speech, Ambassador Chang highlighted the pivotal role of MSMEs in nurturing the Korea-India bilateral relationship. He encouraged participants to further strengthen cooperation between the two countries by leveraging the power of entrepreneurship.

Ms. Mercy Epao in her address said, “As we witness a paradigm shift towards innovation and global competitiveness in the MSME sector, I encourage entrepreneurs to seize the abundant opportunities facilitated by vibrant ecosystems, supportive policies, and a focus on research. Let us collectively elevate the MSME sector and contribute significantly to economic growth. I applaud EDII for its pivotal role in advancing the objectives of the Ministry and contributing meaningfully to the nation’s economic development.”

Mr Khambatta in his address said, “Entrepreneurial proficiency is a key factor for MSME entrepreneurs aiming to contribute significantly to economic growth. Higher entrepreneurial quotient among entrepreneurs strengthens the business ecosystem, creating a resilient and sustainable model for growth. This conference is a big step towards creating knowledge infrastructure in the domain. I am sure such efforts will further bolster MSME growth across the globe by giving a platform for experience sharing and mutual learning.”  

Dr Sunil Shukla in his welcome speech said, “MSMEs have come to play a vital role in the development of economies, across countries. India houses various beneficial MSME related schemes and policies, and is constantly seeking to institute ways and means to strengthen the sector. This conference will help strengthen initiatives in this realm. I express my gratitude to the Ministry of MSME for supporting this very thoughtful initiative.”

More than 200 national and 74 international delegates from 75 institutions attended the conference. During the conference, technical sessions will be held to provide a deep dive on the key themes of technology infusion and competitiveness in the MSME sector, digital transformation in MSMEs: opportunities & challenges, policies and regulations: framework for MSMEs, and skill development and technology adoption in MSMEs: leveraging industry 4.0.

Dr. Vineet Rana, General Manager, National Handicapped Finance Development Corporation, DePwD, Government of India; Shri Jagannath Sahoo, President, SBI Foundation; Shri Rajendra Nimbalkar, IAS, Managing Director, Maharashtra Small Scale Industries Development Corporation Ltd., Mumbai; Shri Saumya Chaudhuri, CGM, IDBI Bank Ltd; Dr. Sunil Shukla, Director General, EDII; Dr. Raman Gujral, Director, Department of Projects (Corporate) at EDII, as well as senior officials from DePwD and CSR leaders from
leading corporate entities attended this groundbreaking meet. The ‘Meet’ took up the agenda of sensitizing society at large and instituting interventions and measures that ensure the establishment of 3,000 new enterprises PwDs, including 1,500 technology-driven and 1,500 general enterprises.

This pivotal roundtable meeting brainstormed on creating a better world for PwDs through an effective synergy between government, corporates, and institutions. The discussions revolved around the specific objectives of ensuring empowerment of PwDs through sustainable enterprise creation; creating a set of best practices in the context of infrastructure, perception, environment, security, and other facilities to promote their complete inclusion in society; floating ways to ensure an integrative working environment; deciding on an inventory of business opportunities that PwDs could tap into to create own enterprises; aligning the project and its interventions with sustainable development goals and breaking the professional segregation in society that relegates disabled PwDs to lower- paying jobs.

Based on the discussions and takeaways, the participating corporates identified some primary areas of cooperation. Some of the activities identified to achieve the goal of creating 3000 PwD-led enterprises included: Awareness Campaign to Ensure Community Integration of PwDs; Immersive Life Skills for Adolescents with Disabilities; Sourcing Business Opportunities for PwDs; Sensitization workshops for PwDs; Credit Linkage Support; Entrepreneur Growth-cum-Counselling Programme (EGCP) to Support PwD-led Enterprises and Micro Skillpreneurship Development Programme (MSDP) to enable unemployed PwDs to set up their business.

Dr. Vineet Rana emphasized the pivotal role of NHFDC in empowering Persons with Disabilities (PwDs), stating, “Through NHFDC, we aim to facilitate financial development, ensuring sustainable livelihoods for PwDs in collaboration with EDII and corporate partners.”

Shri Jagannath Sahoo highlighted the collaborative efforts of SBI Foundation with EDII, stating, “SBI Foundation, in partnership with EDII, is committed to creating promising livelihood opportunities for differently-abled individuals through our collaborative ‘Support, Activate and Build Assured Livelihoods’ programme.” Shri Sahoo emphasized on the significance of equity and new possibilities for PwDs.

Shri Saumya Chaudhuri endorsed the role of IDBI Bank’s CSR wing, stating,”IDBI Bank, as part of its CSR initiatives, actively engages in sensitization workshops and credit linkage support aimed at fostering an inclusive environment where people from various echelons of society get multiple opportunities to thrive and prosper.”

A video was screened explaining the features of newly launched DePwD PM Daksh portal for skilling and employment of Divyangjan.

Dr. Sunil Shukla, opined, “For development process to deliver better outcomes, the approach has to be inclusive. Inclusive Development focusses on equity and social growth, which is important for any society. And, in this context, development opportunities for PwDs needs to be curated on high priority, on a regular basis. We need to ensure that the PwDs get suitably trained and handheld. It is also important to establish best practices at workplaces and at various levels of the social framework to foster equality and inclusivity at all levels.”

Dr. Raman Gujral, discussing the various projects undertaken by corporates to empower PwDs, said that EDII has so far 8,653 PwDs through 272 skill training programs, leading to the establishment of 1,247 enterprises. EDII houses the Centre for Empowerment of the Differently Abled (CEDA), supported by the Department of Social Justice & Empowerment, Directorate of Social Defence, Gujarat State Handicapped (Divyang) Finance & Development Corporation, Government of Gujarat, on its campus.

A brainstorming session was held between the officials and corporate leaders present in the conference room. The one-hour long round table discussion included topics related to accessibility, aids and assistive devices, AI for PwDs, Job mapping, entrepreneurship opportunities and disability sensitization.

Mumbai, October 9, 2023: Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla, Hon’ble Governor of Himachal Pradesh, delivered a special lecture on ‘Amrit Kaal Ka Bharat’ at the Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII) on Sunday, 8 th October. The special lecture was organised by Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad, in collaboration with the India Think Council.

Dr Sunil Shukla, Director General, EDII, Dr Milind Kamble, Founder Chairman- DICCI & Governing Board Member, EDII, and Shri Saurabh Pandey, Director, India Think Council were among the other dignitaries present during the event.

Speaking about the crucial role of entrepreneurship in Amrit Kaal Ka Bharat, Shri Shiv Pratap Shukla said, “India is not just a market, it is a ground for innovation. Fiscal revolution, breakthroughs in education, taxation revolution, emphasis on inclusive growth are some of the hallmarks of the Indian Government. Indian Government’s act of reaching out to the grassroots after understanding the basic problems of people, and making sure that basic necessities are fulfilled, is highly appreciable. And, I praise the people too, for accepting and participating in this process of development. Our achievements are getting aligned with the
achievements of the country and that I believe is Amrit Kaal. Talking about Entrepreneurship, I would say, it is the backbone of a thriving economy. It embodies the spirit of innovation, risk-taking, and the drive to create something new and valuable. Amrit Kaal looks forward to seeing youths, women, artisans and the citizens across segments, empowered and skilled with access to modern digital techniques and global markets.”

In his opening remarks, Dr. Sunil Shukla said, “India’s progressive policies and initiatives are game changers. They are taking the country ahead on several fronts. EDII is working in line with the vision of Amrit Kaal ka Bharat. EDII’s programmes and its work in a collaborative mode with various Government Departments and Ministries is creating opportunities for youth, women, artisans, technologists, existing entrepreneurs and several other target groups. EDII is committed to ensuring a developed and empowered India.”

Dr. Milind Kamble in his address said, “While we talk about Amrit Kaal, I appreciate, the focus given to strengthening education. New Education Policy 2020 will lead to skilled youths and that will be the strongest pillar of Amrit Kaal ka Bharat. Further, the G20 Presidency gave the nation an opportunity to showcase the steps taken in the field of financial inclusion, skill development, education, and housing for all. I think the country is envisioning growth with standards that are truly global, inclusive and unparalleled.”

Shri Saurabh Pandey opined, “India is evolving fast on the fronts of soft power ,bilateral relations , Ayush, education, technology, food processing, agriculture, and other such emerging areas. This evolution is certainly inducing sustainable growth and inclusive development, which are the visions of Amrit Kaal ka Bharat. Bharat is getting all its glorious pride back and vedic heritage. It is a pleasure to witness the nation growing from strength to strength.”

The lecture was followed by a panel discussion of the Hon’ble Governor with invited guests from the Industry, Academia and Government. The discussions covered subjects as diverse as industry, tourism, role of academics/institutions, climate change, and related areas. It was moderated by Shri Sunil Parekh, Senior Industry Veteran, Founding Curator of AGS by WEF Geneva, and Start-up Evangelist.
