Chidambaram has been told by the court not to travel abroad or attempt to get back his passport, which is now with the authorities. He has been asked to appear before the agencies when requested, and send a bond worth Rs 2 lakh.

According to reports, Chidambaram reiterated in court that others named in the case have either not been arrested or had received bail. 

In October, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Chidambaram in connection with the INX Media case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). However, the Congress leader continued to be in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which too had filed a money-laundering case on the case.

The CBI had opposed his bail plea alleging that Chidambaram was a ‘flight risk’ and had tried to “pressurise and influence” key witnesses.

The 74-year-old leader was arrested on August 21 by the CBI from his Jor Bagh residence in Delhi. Following 15 days of CBI custody, he was sent to Tihar Jail on September 5. In October, he was sent to the ED’s custody in the INX Media case.

In the same month, the CBI finally filed a chargesheet after first registering a case in 2017, charging P Chidambaram and his son Karti P Chidambaram along with other government officials. The chargesheet reportedly stated that Indrani Mukerjea allegedly paid a bribe of USD 5 million to the father-son duo through offshore payments. Indrani and Peter, directors of INX Media Private Limited, had reportedly received foreign investment of Rs 403.07 crore against approved foreign direct investment (FDI) of Rs 4.62 crore.

The agency, which accuses him of money laundering in the same case, had moved two applications yesterday — to formally arrest Mr Chidambaram and seek his custody.

The court gave two options to the agency: To question Mr Chidambaram at the court premises for half an hour and then move application for custody, and sending him to Tihar jail for now and arresting him from there.

Initially, the agency wanted to arrest him as soon as possible. They even suggested that Mr Chidambaram an be interrogated at the Rouse Avenue court premises and then arrested but Judge intervened saying “dignity of the person should be considered”.

ED sleuths reached Tihar Jail on Wednesday to grill the 74-year-old Congress leader who has been in prison since September 5 after the CBI finished questioning him in the case. He was first taken into custody on August 21.

Seeking Chidambaram’s arrest, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the ED had told Special CBI judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar that there is a finding by the Supreme Court that custodial interrogation of Chidambaram is necessary.

Kuhar allowed the ED to go to Tihar Jail and question Chidambaram and arrest him, if required. “It’s not of the dignity of this person that you question and arrest him here in public view,” the court said.

Chidambaram was remanded to judicial custody till October 17 in the INX Media corruption case filed by the CBI. The special court on October 3 extended the judicial custody of Chidambaram till October 17 in the case filed by the CBI.

The CBI had registered a FIR for alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX media in May 2017 for receiving overseas funds to the tune of ₹305 crore in 2007, when Chidambaram was the finance minister. Thereafter, the ED lodged a money laundering cases against him.

Chidambaram’s bail plea against the arrest by the CBI was heard in the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The Enforcement Directorate is looking into deals related to several properties — including one in Ceejay House in the Worli area of Mumbai, which reportedly belonged to Iqbal Mirchi’s first wife Hajra Memon. The building stands on a plot allegedly owned by Iqbal Mirchi. 

The agency is considering the property as “proceeds of crime”. Mukhtar Memon, believed to be the key person who handles various properties of Iqbal Mirchi in Mumbai, has also been questioned. Mukhtar  Memon is the brother-in-law of Iqbal Mirchi. Both were close aide of Dawood Ibrahim . 

Mr Patel today told the media that the matter is under investigation and the issue is if the “person at  Ceejay House is linked with me”.

He said “After my father’s death, there was dispute in the family among 21 co-owners. The Mumbai High Court was asked in 1978 to take charge and look after the property,” he said.

“The BJP is misusing the I-T, ED and CBI as a pretext against its political opponents… no such revenge politics has ever been seen in the history of the country. Such incidents have spiked after Narendra Modi  became the Prime Minister for the second term,” said the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) in a series of tweets.

The ED arrested the 57-year-old Congress troubleshooter on Tuesday after four days of interrogation in the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, and sought his remand for custodial questioning on the grounds that he was evasive in replies and non-cooperative in responding to a number of questions.

Noting that such incidents like the arrest of Shivakumar and its other senior leader P. Chidambaram by the CBI on August 21 put the country’s democratic system at risk, Rao said there was need for everyone to work together to convince the people of the truth.

Though the ED counsel sought 14-day custody of Shivakumar, Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar allowed only 10 days’ remand till September 13, observing that the income of the accused had a “phenomenal growth” while he was in important place.

Shivakumar was a senior cabinet minister for energy in the Congress government from 2013-2018 and Water Resources in the 14-month JD-S-Congress coalition government from May 23, 2018 to July 23, 2019.

In his nomination to the Election Commission for contesting in the 2018 state assembly elections, Shivakumar declared in an affidavit that he and his family had a whopping Rs 840-crore worth assets, including lands, houses, investments, bank balances and properties as against Rs 251 crore he had before the 2013 assembly elections, a staggering 235 per cent jump in 5 years.

Raj Thackeray was summoned by the ED, which is investigating money-laundering allegations of the IL&FS group in Kohinoor CTNL, a company formed by Unmesh Joshi — son of Shiv Sena leader and former Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi.

Members of the MNS had earlier called for a bandh in Mumbai, Thane and neighbouring districts. However, they withdrew the bandh call after Raj Thackeray appealed to them to avoid inconvenience to the common man.

As a precautionary measure, Mumbai Police imposed Section 144 of the CrPC around the ED office in south Mumbai. Heavy police force has been deployed outside the office and roads leading to it have been barricaded.

Notices have also been issued to MNS leaders under Section 149 of the CrPc as a precautionary measure. Several MNS leaders from Mumbai and Thane have been detained.

In 2005, a consortium was formed by Unmesh Joshi, Raj Thackeray and Rajan Shirodkar to purchase Kohinoor Mills Number 3 for Rs 421 crore.

The land is located opposite Shiv Sena Bhavan in Dadar. The plan was to construct a mall but was changed later to a commercial complex, which was named Kohinoor Square.

The IL&FS group had invested Rs 225 crore in Kohinoor CTNL. The remaining amount of Rs 196 crore was equally paid by Unmesh Joshi, Raj Thackeray and Unmesh Joshi.

Eyebrows were raised when, in 2008, IL&FS surrendered its shares for only Rs 90 crore and booked a loss. Raj Thackeray also sold his stake in the same year and exited the consortium by allegedly making a huge profit.

Chidambram was arrested after a dramatic arrest late on Wednesday from his house in south Delhi.

Mr Chidambaram was put up in “Lock-up suite 3” in the guest-house floor of the CBI building.

Sources say his questioning started this morning. Later in the day, cbi reportedly ask for maximum custody – 14 days – for his interrogation.

Mr Chidambaram is accused of facilitating foreign investment into a television company, INX Media, in 2007, when he was Finance Minister, at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram, who allegedly received kickbacks. Sources say he will be confronted with files of the Foreign Investment Promotion Board, which Mr Chidambaram headed as minister.

Mr Chidambaram and his son were named by INX co-founders Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, who are currently in jail in connection with the murder of Indrani Mukerjea’s daughter Sheena Bora. Mr Chidambaram has denied the allegations, saying the case is a political witch-hunt by the BJP-led government.

Sources say the CBI may also confront the former minister with Indrani Mukherjea’s statement about meeting him over the deal.

The agency is probing Mr. Thackeray’s involvement in the case in connection with the IL&FS group’s loan equity investment in a company called Kohinoor CTNL
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) party chief Raj Thackeray and Unmesh Joshi, son of former State Chief Minister and Shiv Sena leader Manohar Joshi, in connection with its money laundering probe in the IL&FS alleged payment default case, officials said on August 19.

They said that the MNS chief has been asked to appear before the investigating officer of the case on August 22.

Reacting to the development, MNS spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande said, “Raj Thackeray created a sensation during the Lok Sabhapoll campaign earlier this year. It had a significant impacton people and to avoid a similar challenge ahead of theMaharashtra Assembly elections, the ED has issued the notice.”

“It is a case of political vendetta,” he alleged while talking to reporters.

According to reports, investigators are probing the shareholding and investment in Kohinoor CTNL, promoted by Unmesh Joshi, Raj Thackeray and his business partner Rajan Shirodkar. Mr Thackeray had reportedly sold his shares in the consortium in 2008.

A report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said last week that IL&FS may not have disclosed bad loans on its books for years despite a big part of its loan book having soured.
