Domestic Air Traffic Growth Slows to 4–6% in FY26

India’s domestic passenger traffic is projected to rise to 172–176 million in FY26, marking slower growth despite an increase in aircraft deliveries, ICRA reported. Q1 traffic growth of 4.4% was hit by cross-border tensions, flight disruptions, and safety concerns. A prolonged monsoon and US trade headwinds are also weighing on demand, with passenger yields dipping 4–5% year-on-year.

Airlines added 5% capacity, expanding the fleet to 855 aircraft, with 1,600+ new planes on order. Grounded aircraft have reduced to 15–17% of the fleet, showing operational recovery amid financial pressures.

Domestic air traffic grows to 16.13 cr in 2024

India’s domestic air traffic reached 16.13 crore in 2024, marking a 6 per cent increase year-on-year. Airlines expanded their fleets and networks to meet growing demand. IndiGo led with a 64.4 per cent market share, followed by Air India at 26.4 per cent. December witnessed flight cancellations and delays impacting passengers, with significant compensation provided.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday said airlines carried over 1.49 crore passengers in December 2024, an increase of 8.19 per cent compared to December 2023 when it stood at nearly 1.38 crore.
