NEW DELHI. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has taken a significant step towards expanding its metro and urban-transit expertise beyond Delhi and India with the establishment of Delhi Metro International Limited (DMIL). The new entity will undertake metro projects and Operations & Maintenance (O&M) assignments in India outside Delhi as well as overseas markets. DMIL will also provide advisory services to governments, transit authorities and lenders for the development, improvement and long-term planning of metro and urban-transit systems.

The initiative seeks to transform DMRC’s more than three decades of experience in planning, developing and operating one of India’s largest metro networks into an international business opportunity. Sanjay Jamuar has been appointed as the first CEO of DMIL, marking the beginning of a dedicated effort to pursue overseas consultancy, project execution and O&M opportunities. The move could strengthen India’s position as an exporter of metro-rail expertise and comprehensive urban-mobility solutions.

NEW DELHI. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has established itself among the elite urban transit systems worldwide, outperforming renowned networks like the Hong Kong Metro, Paris Metro, and the New York Subway in both operational punctuality and service reliability. This achievement is particularly remarkable given DMRC’s stringent operational standards: while many global systems classify a train as late only after several minutes, Delhi Metro considers a train delayed if it reaches its destination station just 59 seconds behind schedule. Starting at a 98.27% punctuality rate in 2003, DMRC surpassed the 99% mark within its first two years of operations. Despite rapid network expansion, it achieved an unprecedented 99.95% punctuality rate in 2026. Consequently, international benchmarking by the Community of Metros (COMET) consistently ranks Delhi Metro among the top five most reliable metro networks globally.

To accommodate rising passenger demands without compromising efficiency, DMRC has significantly reduced train headway on its busiest corridors from nearly seven minutes in its early years down to just 2 minutes and 18 seconds. Emphasizing the link between punctuality and hardware dependability, the network has recorded an impressive Mean Distance Between Failures (MDBF) of 2.72 million car-kilometers. Furthermore, DMRC leads the country in automated transit, operating India’s largest driverless network with nearly 29% of its tracks functioning under Unattended Train Operation (UTO).
