How to Find Your DIGIPIN

Citizens can find their DIGIPIN through the web application developed by the Department of Posts at India Post DIGIPIN portal. Users need to allow location access on a GNSS-enabled device, after which the application can fetch the location’s latitude and longitude and generate the corresponding DIGIPIN. No login or sign-up is required. The system is also designed to work offline, and the DIGIPIN itself does not store personal information; it serves as a geographic reference for a location. Importantly, DIGIPIN will not replace an individual’s existing postal address or PIN code but will function as an additional digital addressing layer.

What Makes DIGIPIN Different?

DIGIPIN is designed to bridge the gap between physical locations and their digital representation. Its precise geographic reference can support applications such as logistics, e-commerce deliveries, government services, banking and financial services, navigation and emergency response. Because the code is based on geographic coordinates rather than changing infrastructure such as building names, roads or locality names, the DIGIPIN associated with a location remains fixed even when surrounding infrastructure changes. India Post says the system is intended to provide a standardised addressing framework across India while complementing, rather than replacing, traditional addresses.

Developed jointly by IIT Hyderabad and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) of ISRO, the DIGIPIN system is designed to pinpoint every address in India with high accuracy, mapping each location to a four-metre by four-metre grid.

According to Vivek Daksh, deputy director general, department of posts, the new system aims to improve precision and efficiency in sorting and delivery. He stated that the traditional PIN code system, though effective for its time, now needs an upgrade to match modern delivery and navigation requirements.

The DIGIPIN system is expected to enhance last-mile delivery services, support emergency response systems, and simplify navigation in rural and densely populated urban areas where conventional addresses often lead to confusion.

To facilitate smooth implementation, the postal department has sought technical and strategic assistance from institutions such as IIM and IISc Bengaluru to study the nationwide adoption of the digital pincode framework.

While the existing six-digit PIN codes will continue for now, the new DIGIPIN system marks the beginning of a phased transition towards a more accurate, technology-driven addressing infrastructure across the country.
