NEW DELHI — In a milestone that highlights India’s expanding footprint in global aviation, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has climbed four places to claim the 28th spot in the prestigious 2026 Skytrax World Airport Rankings. Handling nearly 79 million passengers annually, Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) secured its position as the only Indian hub in the global top 30, while retaining its crown as the “Best Airport in India & South Asia.”

The achievement marks a broader philosophical shift in global travel: airports are no longer viewed simply as transit networks with gates, but as a traveler’s first intimate experience with a nation’s brand.

Delhi IGI: Competing at Global ScaleAs global airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Singapore Airlines, and Emirates funnel millions of international business leaders, diplomats, and tourists through the capital, Delhi Airport has balanced staggering traffic loads with an increasingly polished passenger experience. The Scale: Serving nearly 79 million passengers annually, placing it alongside some of the absolute busiest transit vectors on earth.

The Focus: Moving beyond infrastructure to emphasize transit comfort, cultural showcases (such as the terminal’s iconic Mudra hand gestures), and streamlined border handling.

The Strategic Takeaway

For India’s booming economy, Delhi Airport’s upward trajectory is a strong signal. As international travel accelerates, global airports are actively competing for a larger share of tourism revenue, high-value airline partnerships, and international transit spending.

By prioritizing passenger sentiment over just expanding terminal footprints, Delhi’s steady climb indicates that Indian aviation is evolving to treat infrastructure as the baseline, and the passenger experience as the true differentiator.

The Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi is on track to meet global standards for classification as an international airport hub within the next two years, according to Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL). Currently accommodating approximately 22 million international passengers annually, DIAL expects this figure to surpass 24 million in the coming years. A consultancy study by Arthur D. Little has identified key benchmarks that the airport must achieve, and Jaipuriar noted that IGI Airport is making significant progress toward these targets.

In addition to overall passenger numbers, another critical parameter for hub classification is international connecting traffic, which currently accounts for 26 percent of the airport’s total international traffic, or about 5.5 million passengers. Jaipuriar emphasized the airport’s connectivity, highlighting that Delhi International Airport serves 70 international destinations, with nine in North America and 18 in Europe, totaling 280 weekly frequencies for long-haul routes. He added that DIAL handles more international long-haul flights than Singapore Airport, underscoring its growing significance in global aviation.

Delhi airport operator DIAL on Monday said it has introduced Self Baggage Drop (SBD) facility at Terminal 3 that will help reduce the waiting time for passengers at the airport. A total of 14 SBD machines, including 12 automated and two hybrids, have been installed.

SBD aims to streamline the baggage drop-off process, reduce the wait time for passengers by around 15-20 minutes and further enhance the overall airport experience. The facility can cater to up to three passengers per minute, according to the Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL).

Currently, domestic passengers will be able to use the facility, and it will be made available for international passengers post mandatory approvals.

Passengers can use the SBD facility through a two-step process. After generating their boarding passes and baggage tags at the Self Check-In kiosk, passengers have to tag their check-in baggage.

At the SBD facility, they will have to scan their boarding pass, declare that their luggage is free of prohibited/ dangerous items, and load their baggage onto the designated belt. Once the process is completed, the baggage will be automatically transferred to the sorting area and subsequently onto the aircraft

Next time if you are dialing a mobile phone from landline connection you will be needed to dial 0 before the mobile number . its done on TRAI recommendations.

With the consideration of TRAI Recommendation on “Ensuring Adequate Numbering Resources for Fixed Line and Mobile Services” Department of Telecommunications has taken the decision of implementing the following:

All Fixed to Mobile calls will be dialed with prefix ‘0’ from 15th January, 2021.

There will be no change in dialing plan from fixed to fixed, mobile to fixed and mobile to mobile calls.

Suitable announcementwill be made for the same. This announcement shall be played whenever a subscriber dials a fixed to mobile call without prefixing ‘0’.

All fixed line subscribers will be provided with ‘0’ dialing facility.

A total of approximately 2539 million numbering series is expected to be generated from the above. This will free up sufficient numbering resources for future use.

With the freeing up of sufficient numbering resources, more number of connections can be added in future which will be beneficial to the mobile customers at large.

The above changes have been done in order to have minimum inconvenience to the subscribers and freeing up essential numbering resources.
