NEW DELHI. The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) has retained its position as India’s highest-ranked university in the QS World University Rankings 2027. Climbing five places to secure the 118th position globally, IIT Delhi has matched the highest-ever ranking achieved by an Indian institution. Over the last four years, the premier institute has jumped 79 positions, driven by significant advancements in employer reputation, employment outcomes, and research citations per faculty member.

The latest index released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds underscores a broader transformation within India’s higher education ecosystem, with a record 52 Indian universities securing spots on the list. This achievement establishes India as the fifth most represented nation globally and marks a 271 percent growth in representation since 2017.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan credited these stellar results to institutional reforms driven by the National Education Policy 2020. The findings indicate that academic excellence is diversifying beyond the IIT network, with 13 non-IIT institutions achieving their highest-ever global ranks. Other top Indian performers include IIT Bombay at 134th and IIT Madras at 170th, alongside notable upward movements from private and central universities nationwide.

The MoU was exchanged in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister for Education Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, with Ambassador Vinay Kwatra joining virtually from the United States. The School will be set up through a ₹100 crore endowment by Ms. Tandon, an alumna of IIMA’s PGP Class of 1975, and her husband Mr. Ranjan Tandon.

Speaking on the occasion, the Education Minister described the initiative as a significant step towards positioning India as a global AI leader, aligned with the upcoming India–AI Impact Summit 2026. Envisioned as a pioneering AI school within a management institute, the School will operate at the intersection of technology, management and public impact, focusing on responsible, application-led and translational AI. Anchored in IIMA’s legacy, it aims to advance business-focused AI research, support AI for social good, and strengthen India’s human capital and institutional leadership in the AI ecosystem.
