NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to consider increasing the ₹500 fine for throwing garbage into drains, observing that the current penalty is inadequate given its role in causing waterlogging during the monsoon. The Court directed the MCD to submit a proposal for enhancing the fine.

A Bench of Justice Prathiba M. Singh and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora expressed concern over the lack of civic sense among citizens, noting that countries such as Vietnam effectively manage heavy rainfall through better public discipline and coordinated civic action. The Court warned that it would not hesitate to take stringent action against those found dumping waste into drains.

The Court also directed the MCD, Delhi Jal Board, and Delhi Police to strengthen coordination for drain maintenance, sewage management, and enforcement against littering. It asked civic agencies to expedite work on covering open drains and ensuring stormwater drains remain functional before the onset of the monsoon. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on July 24. LIVE LAW
