The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) proudly observed World Public Transport Day 2026, in line with the global mandate received from the International Association of Public Transport (UITP). UITP, founded in 1885, is a worldwide body dedicated to shaping policy and raising awareness about the importance of public transport.

On this occasion, DMRC’s Managing Director Dr. Vikas Kumar and Dr. Shalini Singh, President, DMRC Ladies Welfare Organisation, along with other senior officials were present. Ms. Rupa Nandy, Head of UITP, India, also graced the event.

To observe the occasion, DMRC organized a special train ride for about 100 children from the NGO Jan Parivartan. This initiative helped the young participants understand the benefits of public transport and encouraged them to adopt sustainable travel habits. Following the train ride, the children gathered at Metro Bhawan to take part in a drawing competition on the theme “Public Transport for a Better Tomorrow.” The competition inspired creativity while reinforcing the importance of environmentally friendly commuting options.

<div id="penci-post-gallery-container6737" data-id="penci-post-gallery-container6737" class="penci-popup-gallery penci-post-gallery-container justified column-2 justified-gallery"data-height="150"data-margin="3">

Adding to the vibrancy of the occasion, college students from Jesus and Mary College and Lady Hardinge Medical College performed street plays in front of these young children, highlighting the importance of public transport. Their performances served as a dynamic medium to engage the children directly and reinforce the message of sustainable travel in an interactive and memorable way.

In addition, digital banners were displayed across metro stations. These banners emphasized the importance of public transport and reminded commuters of their role in reducing congestion, pollution, and carbon emissions. Announcements regarding the same are also being made at all metro stations this week.

Through these initiatives, DMRC reaffirmed its commitment to supporting UITP’s vision of a better tomorrow. By engaging children, students, and commuters alike, the day inspired citizens to embrace public transport as a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable mode of travel.

The Park Street RSS was originally constructed in 2010 during Phase‑2 of the Delhi Metro to supply power to the DMRC Airport Line and Line‑6 (Violet Line). During 2021–22, the facility was dismantled to facilitate the construction of the Central Vista Project. Reconstruction of a new RSS commenced in 2023 on alternate land provided by CPWD, culminating to its completion in December 2025, duly accounting for the power requirement of the Central-Vista Metro line from Indraprastha to R K Ashram Marg.

All major existing electrical equipment has been re‑erected and commissioned, including 66 kV Power transformers, 66 kV GIS panels, 33 kV panels, and 25 kV GIS panels. The new combined RSS will supply power to the Metro Trains and Stations of Airport Line, Line‑6, and further, Additional 25 kV feeders are provided for Traction Power requirements of upcoming Central Vista Metro Line (Indraprastha to R K Ashram Marg) under its Phase-5A Expansion Project.

The new RSS facility has been constructed as per the latest standards, incorporating an upgraded Substation Automation System, Energy‑efficient VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) Air‑conditioning and LED lighting. Advanced safety measures include Automatic Fire Protection Systems for transformers protection and Electrical Panels, including a fully Addressable fire alarm system to ensure operational reliability.

The new RSS has been designed in line with Green Building compliance standards, and a certification has been applied for it. In addition, a Solar Roof top power system is planned to further enhance sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of operations.

The completion of the Park Street RSS under the Central Vista Project of GOI marks another step in DMRC’s commitment to modern, safe, and sustainable infrastructure, ensuring reliable power supply for Delhi Metro’s expanding network.

As part of this activity, a drive was conducted today between Azadpur and Ashok Vihar, where a number of activities such as a cleanliness drive, restoration of damaged footpaths, restoration and beautification of road medians, repair of nearby roads was taken up by DMRC. Delhi Metro’s engineers inspected the construction sites as well as the surrounding roads thoroughly and ensured that all construction materials were properly covered and the wheel wash facilities for outgoing vehicles were in working condition.

More such drives are being conducted across Delhi Metro’s sites taking into consideration the challenges posed by increasing pollution levels in the national capital. These drives are being conducted in addition to a number of measures already taken up by DMRC to handle the issue of pollution.

About 19 kilometres of city roads are under DMRC’s temporary jurisdiction currently. These roads have been taken over by DMRC to facilitate Metro construction work in the vicinity. These roads have already been repaired by DMRC to ensure that they do not contribute to any further pollution in the city.

In total, over a hundred anti-smog guns have been installed at the construction sites, stations and office buildings to decrease dust levels. Daily inspections are being conducted by DMRC’s Environment depart to ensure that all environmental norms are adequately followed.

Delhi’s Hon’ble Chief Minister, Smt. Rekha Gupta has directed all agencies to ensure that all norms regarding the protection of environment are strictly adhered to. DMRC is also committed to following the norms with all seriousness and ensure complete compliance.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has achieved a unique engineering feat in its Phase 4 expansion work by successfully constructing an underground tunnel at Pulbangash below the already operational Red Line of the Delhi Metro network. This tunnel has been constructed as part of the Janakpuri West – RK Ashram Marg extension of the Magenta Line.

This tunnelling work between the Pulbangash and Sadar Bazar stations was especially challenging, as trains on the busy Red Line above were not halted for even a single day, even as the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) carefully constructed the tunnel below the elevated viaduct on which trains were operational. Moreover, the Red Line viaduct here stands on open foundations with a balanced cantilever span. Tunnelling beneath such a structure required extraordinary engineering precautions to ensure its safety.

A number of measures were taken by DMRC’s engineers to achieve this feat. Some of them are mentioned below:

• Extensive Ground Strengthening Around the Existing Pier: A detailed strategy was adopted to strengthen the area around the pier of the Red Line. A grouting programme called TAM (Tube-a-Manchette) was implemented. As per this technology, 180 TAM boreholes were arranged around the pier. After that, high-strength cement grouting was done to stabilise the soil, fill the voids and in the process, increase the load-bearing capacity. In addition, it was also ensured that all possibilities of settlement of soil during tunnelling were eliminated.

• World Class Instrumentation and Real Time Monitoring: Elaborate instrumentation was deployed during the tunnelling work to monitor ground movement, pier behaviour, and building safety on a real-time basis. Some of these equipment were Surface Settlement Markers, Deep Inclinometers, Building Settlement Points, Pier Tilt Meters and Load Cells, Automatic Total Station (ATC).

Specialised personnel were deployed round the clock to monitor the readings of these advanced equipment. All parameters remained well within permissible limits during the entire operation.

The construction of the downline tunnel on this section has now been completed. Work on the up-line tunnel is in progress with the same level of precautions and monitoring. This was an extremely critical construction work since the Red Line, on average, carries about seven lakh passengers every day. Any disruption to the movement of trains on this line would have caused tremendous inconvenience to the people.
