The Defence Minister further said that Operation Sindoor, is a result of determination, courage, and science. He stated that it is not only a testament to the bravery of Indian soldiers, but also proves the calibre of scientific innovations of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that a nation becomes strong only with the coordination of arms and knowledge. He said Uttar Pradesh is playing a leading role in defence production.

“We have undertaken significant economic reforms to improve the ease of doing business and opening up the economy for investments. Our Government under the leadership of our Prime Minister Modi has opened up defence sector manufacturing to a large extent under the ‘Make in India’ initiative”, he said. 

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh underlined the significance of implementation of a single Goods and Services Tax across India, the biggest tax reform since its independence. “We have recently reduced our corporate tax much. For ‘Make in India’ in Defence if there is need for further tax rationalisation, it may be considered suitably”, Shri Singh said. 

Raksha Mantri applauded the French companies for regularly participating in DefExpos organised in India with great energy and enthusiasm. He extended a special invitation to French firms to take part in DefExpo, which will be held in Lucknow from February 05 to 08, 2020. “Lucknow happens to be a city of rich culture and heritage and the French people are known to be highly appreciative of great cultures. Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh which is also a land of new opportunities”, he added. 

Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh highlighted India’s substantial need of Aero engines both in civil and military domains. He requested French OEMs to consider exploring development of an Aero engine complex on government -to- government basis saying French companies could leverage from advantages in India such as low wages and availability of technical personnel. 

India’s Ambassador to France Shri Vinay Kwatra gave the welcome address. Additional Secretary, Ministry of Defence Shri Barun Mitra also gave a presentation on DefExpo 2020. Dr Ajay Kumar, Defence Secretary also addressed the CEOs.

Singh will also meet French President Emmanuel Macron in Paris to discuss issues on bilateral  defence and security ties.The ceremony to hand over the Rafale jet will take place at a facility of Dassault Aviation, the makers of the plane, in Merignac of Bordeaux.

“The defence minister will take part in the Rafale handing over ceremony at Merignac along with French Minister of Armed Forces Florence Parly. He will also do the Shastra puja on the auspicious occasion of Vijayadashami and fly a sortie in the Rafale fighter aircraft,” Defence Ministry Spokesperson Bharat Bhusan Babu said.

Even though the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will be receiving the first Rafale fighter jet in France, the  plane will come to India only in next year.“The first four of 36 Rafale jets will come to India by May next year and the plane will definitely enhance the IAF’s combat prowess,” Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria said .

In his first press conference after taking charge of the top post on September 30, Bhadauria said the acquisition of the Rafale plane and the S-400 missile systems will give major boost to IAF’s operational  ability.

India had signed an inter-governmental agreement with France in September 2016 for procurement of 36  Rafale fighter jets at a cost of around Rs 58,000 crore. The plane is capable of carrying a range of potent weapons and missiles.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has already inducted a batch of Tejas aircraft. The naval version of the LCA is in development stage.

Mr Singh will also attend an exhibition of products of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Bengaluru.

Initially, the IAF had placed an order with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 40 Tejas aircraft. Last year, the IAF issued the ask for proposal to HAL for the procurement of another batch of 83 Tejas at a cost of over Rs. 50,000 crore.

In January this year, Nirmala Sitharaman, who was the Defence Minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s previous government, became the second Indian woman leader to go on a sortie on a Sukhoi-30 fighter jet.

Mr Singh, 68, walked up to the plane along with the pilot, climbed up the steps and strapped himself in the backseat, behind the pilot. Wearing a white helmet and an  oxygen mask, the Defence Minister was seen waving before the twin-seater version of Tejas took off for a 30-minute sortie. He was briefed by the pilot and other top Indian Air Force (IAF) officials. Air Vice Marshal N Tiwari was among the officers who walked him up to the jet.

The Defence Minister “controlled the plane for sometime”, said Dr G Sathish Reddy, chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

“The flight very smooth and comfortable. I was thrilled. I chose Tejas since it is made indigenously,” Mr Singh said after the sortie. “Countries in South East Asia have shown interest in buying Tejas aircraft,” he added.

“All set for the day,” Mr Singh had tweeted earlier, sharing two photos.
