Four days after Barge P305 sank in the Arabian Sea, the Mumbai police on Friday registered a case of negligence in the mishap. A spokesperson of the Indian Navy Friday said at least 51 bodies have been recovered and 27 personnel are missing.

Early on Friday, the police said that on the complaint of a P305 engineer, an offence was registered under Sections 304(II) (an act done with knowledge that it is likely to cause death), 338 (causing grievous hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

The Yellow Gate police said they have booked the captain of the barge for allegedly ignoring the warnings related to Cyclone Tauktae.

Mumbai Police Spokesperson DCP S Chaitanya said, “The captain of the barge acted negligently on the warnings issued related to Cyclone Tautkee and that allegedly led to the mishap which has killed 49 so far, due to which we have registered an offence. We have so far mentioned the barge’s captain and others in the FIR, and on the basis of the findings of the investigation, we will book more officials.”

The investigators will also seek necessary inquiry reports from the departments conducting the probe.

In a statement, Afcons said the Master of P305, Balwinder Singh, decided to move the barge only 200 metres away from the platform where it was operating even as other vessels moved closer to safe harbours based on its advice. The predicted maximum wind speeds of 40 knots (about 75 km/hr) and the barge’s location being about 120 nautical miles (222 km) from the anticipated eye of the storm led the Master to believe they were safe, the company said. Singh reportedly understood the cyclone to be a “tropical storm”.

The health ministry says that the national case fatality rate touched 1.5%, the rate for at least 14 states was below 1%.

“Many states conducted population surveys to map and identify the vulnerable population like the elderly, pregnant women and those with co-morbidities,” the health ministry said. “This, along with the help of technological solutions such as mobile apps, has ensured keeping the high-risk population under continuous observation, thus aiding early identification, timely clinical treatment and in reducing fatalities.”

In the past 24 hours, 45,148 new confirmed cases of covid-19 were reported, taking the total count to 7,911,104 on Monday, with 119,603 fatalities. At least 480 people died of the infection in the past 24 hours. Active cases stood at 653,717.

“India has one of the lowest fatality rates in the world. The case fatality rate is lowest since 22 March and is continuously declining,” the ministry said, adding that the number of new confirmed cases is the lowest since 22 July when 37,000 new cases were reported.

The focused efforts of Centre and State/UT governments on effective clinical management of the hospitalized cases have ensured that India’s Fatality Rate has touched 1.5%. Less than 500 deaths (480) have been reported in last 24 hours in the country. India has one of the lowest fatality rates in the world. The Case Fatality rate is lowest since 22nd March and is continuously declining. 2218 Dedicated COVID Hospitals are providing quality medical care. At the ground level, frontline health workers like ASHAs and ANMs have done a commendable job of managing the migrant population and to enhance awareness at the community level. As a result, there are 14 States and UTs with CFR lower than 1%.59,105 new recoveries were added in last 24 hour whereas new recovered cases were 45,148. With this, the total number of recoveries have crossed 71 Lakh (71,37,228). Higher number of single day recoveries is also reflected in the continuous increase in the national recovery rate, which is at present 90.23%.India continues to report a trend of steadily decreasing active cases. Presently the active cases comprise merely 8.26% of the total positive cases of the country standing at 6,53,717. This is the lowest since 13th August when the active cases were 6,53,622. 78% of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in 10 States/UTs. Karnataka has contributed the maximum to the single day recoveries with more than 10,000 cases followed by Kerala with more than 7,000 cases. 45,148 new confirmed cases were registered in the last 24 hours in the country. This is the lowest since 22nd July when 37,000 new cases were added. 82% of new confirmed cases are from 10 States and UTs. Kerala and Maharashtra contribute maximum to the new confirmed cases with more than 6,000 cases each followed by Karnataka, Delhi and West Bengal with more than 4,000 cases. 480 case fatalities have been reported in the past 24 hours. Of these, nearly 80% are concentrated in ten States/UTs. More than 23% of new fatalities reported are from Maharashtra (112 deaths)

The AIIMS report declaring the death of Bollywood star Sushant Singh Rajput a “case of suicide” matches the conclusion the CBI’s investigators reached after their reconstruction of the incident. And a forensic audit of Rajput’s bank accounts has not thrown up anything “suspicious” to suggest that his friend Rhea Chakraborty could have pushed Rajput to suicide for financial gain, agency sources have confirmed to The Indian Express.

So the CBI, sources said, is now focusing on the gamut of reasons that could have led to the actor taking his own life: any role played by Chakraborty; professional rivalry and nepotism in Bollywood; effect of drug abuse and Rajput’s mental health.

Of the over Rs 70 crore worth of transactions through Rajput’s accounts in the past five years, only about Rs 55 lakh have been found to have been associated with Chakraborty. Most of these, sources said, were expenses on travel, spas and gifts.

“Chakraborty continues to be under scanner for abetment to suicide. But it is true CBI hasn’t yet found any motive for abetment. There was a forensic audit done of Rajput’s account. There is nothing concrete in the audit report to suggest that Chakraborty siphoned off funds and this led to the actor’s suicide. The expenses incurred by Rajput on her are comparatively small and can easily be explained as expenses on a friend. However, there are many angles to the suicide and our investigation is still on,” said an official privy to probe details.

The death toll from the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in India surpassed the 100,000 mark on Friday and high rate of infection continues .

India became the third country in the world to cross this landmark – only the United States (212,000 deaths) and Brazil (144,000 dead) have reported more fatalities – but does so with a significantly better mortality rate than nearly all other countries that have seen large outbreaks. India’s case fatality rate (CFR) – the proportion of death to the number of confirmed cases – stands at 1.56%, which is not only half of the global average (2.98%), but also better than the comparable rates in the US (2.84%) and Brazil (2.99%).

However, since the first week of September, daily deaths in India have been outstripping those in any country in the world. On average, 1,065 people have died every day over the past week in the country, against 755 average daily deaths in the US and 713 in Brazil in the same period.

The total coronavirus cases mounted to 64,73,544 with 79,476 new infections being reported in a day, while the death toll climbed to 1,00,842 with the virus claiming 1,069 lives in a span of 24 hours, data updated at 8 am showed.

The total recoveries have surged to 54,27,706, while there are 9,44,996 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country which comprises 14.60 per cent of the total caseload, the data showed.

The COVID-19 case fatality rate was recorded at 1.56 per cent.

India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and 40 lakh on September 5. It went past 50 lakh on September 16 and crossed 60 lakh on September 28.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a cumulative total of 7,78,50,403 samples have been tested up to October 2, of which 11,32,675 were tested on Friday.

Meanwhile, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Releasing a statement, the office of the Vice President said that Naidu underwent a Covid-19 test today morning. As per reports, Naidu is asymptomatic and in home quarantine.

Releasing the findings of the second nationwide sero-survey on Tuesday, ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava said 6.6 per cent of the 29,082 people (aged 10 years and above) surveyed from August 17 to September 22 showed evidence of past exposure to Covid-19. The prevalence was higher for adults (aged 18 years and above) at 7.1 per cent.

meanwhile govt said India continues to report high number of recoveries. The recovered cases have exceeded the new confirmed cases again during the past 24 hours. Maharashtra, Karnataka Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Odisha, Kerala, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh. Maharashtra is topping the list with nearly 20,000 recoveries while Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh both contribute more than 7,000 to the single day recoveries. Recovered cases exceed the active cases (9,47,576 ) by more than 41.5 lakh (41,53,831). The recovered cases are 5.38 times the active cases ensuring that the recoveries are consistently rising. The active caseload of the country presently is merely 15.42% of the total positive cases and is consistently declining. A total of 70,589 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours in the country. 10 States/UTs account for 73% of the new confirmed cases. Maharashtra continues to lead this tally. It has contributed more than 11,000 followed by Karnataka with more than 6,000 cases.
