Mumbai, January 12^th 2026: Coromandel International Limited, one of India’s leading agri-solutions providers, has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM) for the establishment of a Corporate Research Centre at the IITM Research Park. The announcement was made during the inauguration of the IITM Global Research Foundation, presided over by Dr. S. Jaishankar, Hon’ble Minister of External Affairs, Government of India.

During the ceremony, the MoU copy was formally handed over to Mr. Narayanan Vellayan, Whole-time Director – Strategic Sourcing, Coromandel International Limited, by Dr. Jaishankar, in the presence of Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras. The event witnessed participation from IIT Madras’ global partners across the USA, UK, Germany, Malaysia, UAE, and Singapore, underscoring the institute’s expanding international research footprint.

The partnership will enable Coromandel to leverage the world-class research, innovation, and technology infrastructure of the IIT Madras ecosystem in India and abroad, fostering advanced collaboration in areas of strategic importance to agriculture, sustainability and emerging technologies.

Speaking on the partnership, Mr. Narayanan Vellayan, Whole-time Director – Strategic Sourcing, Coromandel International Limited, said: “Coromandel has always believed that innovation and research are critical to strengthening India’s agricultural ecosystem and driving sustainable growth. Our collaboration with IIT Madras Global will enable us to work closely with leading researchers, scientists, and global partners to develop breakthrough solutions in crop nutrition and advanced agri-inputs. Highlighting the significance of the collaboration, Mr. T. Madhav Narayan, CEO, IITM Global, said that the MoU with Coromandel represents a powerful step toward deep industry–academia engagement, accelerating translational research and innovation with real-world impact.

The Corporate Research Centre will act as a hub for joint research programs, technology incubation, talent development, and international collaboration, supporting Coromandel’s long-term focus on science-led growth and future-ready agri-solutions.

Dr. Siba Prasad Mohanty, Managing Director of Hindustan Urvarak & Rasayan Ltd., formerly one of the two Co-Chairmen, will now be the sole Co-Chairman of FAI.

Mr. Sankarasubramanian, who is currently Co-Chairman of the FAI Board and Chairman of FAI’s Southern Region, brings over three decades of diverse experience in the fertiliser industry, particularly in the Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) sector.

Mr. Sankarasubramanian said “FAI is committed to driving innovation and sustainability through resource efficiency and balanced nutrition, while working closely with policymakers to achieve Atmanirbharta in the fertiliser sector. We will continue to align industry goals with national agricultural priorities to foster growth, resilience and long-term food security.”

The Fertiliser Association of India extended its sincere thanks and appreciation to Mr. Sailesh C. Mehta, earlier Chairman of FAI, for his leadership and continue to look forward to his guidance and support for the sector.

Established in 1955, FAI is a non-profit apex industry body representing the fertiliser manufacturers, distributors, importers, equipment manufacturers, research institutes and suppliers of inputs.

The collaboration marks a significant step towards addressing critical challenges in agriculture by introducing next-generation fertilizers aimed at enhancing nutrient efficiency, improving crop productivity, and reducing environmental impact. The agreement brings together CIL’s extensive market reach and advanced R&D facilities with IFDC’s global expertise in fertilizer research and production technologies.

Key Areas of Collaboration

Coromandel International is actively pursuing the development of new and efficient fertilizers at its three state-of-the-art R&D centers located in Vishakhapatnam, IIT Bombay, and Coimbatore. These efforts aim to bring innovative solutions to the Indian market, empowering farmers with advanced products that enhance productivity while promoting soil health.

IFDC, with its cutting-edge research facilities in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, USA, has been a pioneer in developing advanced fertilizers and technologies. Looking ahead, IFDC plans to establish similar facilities in India, further strengthening the collaborative ecosystem for fertilizer innovation.

Mr. Sankarasubramanian brings a wealth of experience and has a proven track record as a Chief Financial Officer and a Business Head. He is a mathematics graduate from University of Madras, and a member of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India, and has completed Advanced Management Program (AMP) at Harvard Business School in the year 2009.

His association with the Murugappa Group goes back to the year 1993. He started his career at E.I.D Parry (India) Limited in Corporate Finance, where he progressed through various roles before joining Coromandel International Limited in 2003.

During this tenure as business head of Nutrient segment, Coromandel has consolidated its position in the industry and grown profitably and diversified into new product portfolios including Nano technology and drone spraying services besides foraying into Mining operations. He also serves on the boards of Fertiliser Association of India, Tunisian Indian Fertiliser S.A., Tunisia, and Foskor (Pty) Ltd., South Africa, along with some of the company’s subsidiaries.
