Police said the victim, Ratan Singh, was allegedly beaten up before he was shot inside the village head’s residence, which is just 700 metres from the victim’s house.

Three villagers, all distant relatives of Ratan, have been detained for questioning.

“We are trying to find why the victim went to the pradhan’s house. It is suspected that the victim was beaten up before being shot. Village pradhan Seema Singh’s husband, Jhabhar Singh, is currently absconding,” said Circle Officer (Fefna) Chandrakesh Singh, adding that the victim’s family is yet to file a complaint.

“We are yet to find out the nature of the dispute between Ratan Singh and the accused,” said the CO.
Police suspect that the incident occurred over an old dispute in the pradhan’s family.

According to the Circle Officer, the local police were informed that a man was shot dead at Khetna village and his body was lying on the premises of the village pradhan’s residence. “A police team rushed to the spot and seized the body. During the preliminary inquiry, we came to know that the journalist had left his home for some work in the evening,” said the Circle Officer.

Police are looking into the role of Ratan Singh’s relative, Dinesh Singh, in the case. He worked with news channel, police said quoting his family.

“Ratan Singh had an old dispute with his relatives. Three persons have been immediately taken into custody.

The incident has nothing to do with journalism,” Ballia police tweeted.

ADG (Law & Order) Prashant Kumar also said that as per his information Ratan Singh was having a dispute with his neighbours. “Today evening, a clash took place between them and during the scuffle, he was shot,” he added.

Meanwhile, journalists and a group of people protested in Ballia, demanding the arrest of the accused.

Members of the minority community pelted stones at the residence of Congress MLA Akhanda Shrinivasa Murthy, DJ Halli and KG Halli police stations.

The police used lathi-charge, tear gas and firing to disperse the violent crowd.

“DG Halli and KG Halli saw violent incidents. To bring this under control, police used lathi charge, tear gas and firing. Police Commissioner went to the spot. Police bandobast is in place. Strict action will be taken against those offenders,” the Bengaluru police posted on Twitter.

While 24 four-wheelers were set on fire, 200 bikes that were burnt have been kept at a police station. A police station was damaged in the violence.

Bengaluru police commissioner Kamal Pant said the situation has been brought under control. While a curfew has been imposed in the violence-hit areas of DG Halli and KG Halli till tomorrow morning, large gatherings have been banned in the rest of Bengaluru city.

The shooter, identified as Gabriel Wortman, 51, was shot dead by officers after a 12-hour manhunt in Nova Scotia province ended Sunday morning.

Among the victims was a veteran female constable with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, which also handles municipal and provincial law enforcement in the province.

Police said the suspect had been on the run since Saturday night, when officers were alerted to shots fired in the town of Portapique, around 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Halifax.

Gun violence in Canada is far less frequent than in the neighboring United States, and weapons more strictly controlled, but the killings were the country’s worst ever, exceeding the toll in 1989 when a gunman murdered 14 female students at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique.

Public broadcaster CBC quoted RCMP Commissioner Brenda Lucki as saying police know of at least 16 victims, besides the shooter.

“What has unfolded overnight and into this morning is incomprehensible and many families are experiencing the loss of a loved one,” Nova Scotia RCMP Commanding Officer, Assistant Commissioner Lee Bergerman, wrote on the force’s local Facebook page.

“That includes our own RCMP family. It is with tremendous sadness that I share with you that we lost Constable Heidi Stevenson, a 23-year veteran of the Force who was killed this morning, while responding to an active shooter incident.”

In addition to Stevenson, a mother of two, a male officer was injured and is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Bergerman said.

The National Post newspaper said another victim was an elementary school teacher, citing a Facebook post from the woman’s sister.

Several victims were discovered both outside and inside a house in Portapique, sparking the manhunt through multiple communities, police said.

“The search for the suspect ended this morning when the suspect was located. And I can confirm that he is deceased,” RCMP Chief Superintendent Chris Leather told a press conference.

Leather said that at one point, the suspect appeared to be wearing part of a police uniform and was driving a vehicle made to look like an RCMP cruiser.

RCMP tweeted several times that he was not an officer and warned he was considered “armed and dangerous.”

“The initial search for the suspect led to multiple sites in the area, including structures that were on fire,” Leather told the news conference.

Another police spokesperson said, without further details, that the gunman was killed after an officer intervened.

Girls are not feeling secure and their FIRs are not being registered. The Yogi Adityanath government must tender resignation,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Meshram said the family members would be provided a house under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. “The sister of the victim too will be given separate security since she may be a witness. One person of the family [as decided by them] will be given a government job… if any member of the family seeks an arms licence for self- defence, then it will be given after completing the due procedure of law,” Meshram said.
