NAGPUR. In a courageous demonstration of duty and human resilience, the Mines Rescue Team of Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) spent nearly 72 hours inside the hazardous, oxygen-deficient NHPC Teesta Stage-VI Tunnel in Sikkim. Navigating extreme atmospheric conditions and perilous underground terrain following a toxic methane explosion, the specialist unit led by Shri Dinesh Bisen, General Manager (Safety), successfully recovered the bodies of 25 trapped workers. This high-stakes mission underscores a transformative evolution under Shri Bisen’s leadership, as WCL’s Mines Rescue Team has grown from a standard support unit into an elite force capable of deploying specialized capability-building long before a national crisis unfolds.

For young mining professionals across India, this selfless operation serves as a profound reminder that the mining sector extends beyond coal production to the protection of human life. While modern technology and rigorous training lay the groundwork for high-risk interventions, it is ultimately character, resolve, and selfless teamwork that deliver under severe pressure. The extraordinary bravery displayed by the WCL rescue team in Sikkim stands as a moment of immense national pride and reinforces the core values of Coal India’s dedicated workforce.
