Shri Ashish Chatterjee AS&FA, Ministry of Coal to join as Part-time Official Director of Coal India Ltd

Govt of India has appointed Shri Ashish Chatterjee, AS&FA, as Part time Official Director [Government Nominee Director] on the Board of Coal India Limited, substituting Ms. Nirupama Kotru, AS&FA, MOC with immediate effect and until further orders.

Shri Ashish Chatterjee is a senior civil servant belonging to the 1999 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Tamil Nadu cadre. An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, he brings over 25 years of extensive administrative experience, spanning both State and Central Government roles.

At the Central level, Shri Chatterjee has served in various significant capacities. As Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, he played a pivotal role in policy formulation and sectoral oversight. He also served as Government Nominee Director on the Boards of GAIL (India) Ltd., IOCL and EIL, contributing to strategic decision-making in the energy sector.

In April, 2025, Shri Ashish Chatterjee assumed the position of Additional Secretary & Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, where he oversees financial administration and advises on fiscal matters relating to the steel sector.

Coal India Ltd increases coal price by Rs 10 per ton

Coal India Ltd has announced the enhancement of coal price by Rs 10/- per ton for coking and non-coking coal for Regulated and Non-Regulated sectors across CIL toward contribution to the corpus of CMPS-1998.

As per the regulatory filing, CIL Board at its meeting held on date, inter alia approved enhancement of notified price of coal by Rs 10/- per ton i.e from existing Rs 10/- per ton to Rs 20/- per ton for non coking and Rs 10/- per ton for coking coal for Regulated and Non-Regulated sectors across CIL towards contribution to the corpus of CMPS-1998.

Coal India Ltd to establish the Centre of Excellence for Mining

Coal India Ltd. and IIT-ISM Dhanbad have signed a MoU to establish the Centre of Excellence for Mining at IIT(ISM), Dhanbad. The new center will collaborate with the forthcoming National Centre for Coal and Energy Research (NaCCER) at Coal India’s subsidiary CMPDIL in Ranchi. The MoU was signed at Coal India’s corporate office in Kolkata in the presence of Chairman Shri P.M. Prasad. Signatories included Dr. B. Veera Reddy, Director Technical, Coal India, and Prof. Sukumar Mishra, Director of IIT(ISM). The initiative aims to advance research capabilities and foster innovation in the mining sector.

Coal PSUs enhance green cover with 235 lakh trees

Government-owned coal/lignite PSUs, led by Coal India Ltd, have planted over 235 lakh saplings across 10,784 hectares from FY 2019-20 to FY 2023-24, significantly enhancing the country’s carbon sink. Besides meeting energy demands, they focus on environmental commitment with diverse plantations, monitored through satellite surveillance, benefiting both biodiversity and local communities.

Coal PSUs have planted more than 235 lakh saplings over an area exceeding 10,784 hectares in the five-year period FY 2019-20 to FY 2023-24 till January, thus enhancing the country’s carbon sink significantly, the Ministry of Coal said on Thursday.
