NTPC Plans ₹14,000 Crore Coal Gasification Project in Chhattisgarh

NEW DELHI. NTPC plans to invest around ₹14,000 crore in its proposed Talaipalli Coal Gasification Project in Chhattisgarh to convert domestic coal into value-added energy products. The plant is expected to produce approximately 0.5 million tonnes of Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) annually, supporting India’s energy security and reducing dependence on imports.

NTPC is seeking around ₹2,000 crore in Viability Gap Funding (VGF) from the Government to support the project. Using advanced gasification technologies, the plant is expected to be commissioned within four to five years, marking NTPC’s expansion into alternative energy solutions beyond conventional power generation.

Major Response to Rs 37,500 Crore Coal Gasification Scheme as First Bidding Round Receives Seven Applications

India’s surface coal and lignite gasification programme has received a significant boost following the receipt of seven major project proposals in the first round of the Centre’s Rs 37,500 crore incentive scheme. Leading public sector and private industrial conglomerates have submitted applications, including Adani Enterprises Limited, NTPC Limited, Talcher Fertilisers Limited, Gallantt Ispat Limited, and Shyam Sel & Power Limited. Among the submissions, Adani Enterprises filed three separate proposals for urea production, Talcher Fertilisers proposed a urea unit, Gallantt Ispat applied for Direct Reduced Iron and syngas, NTPC proposed synthetic natural gas, and Shyam Sel & Power filed for a syngas project. The Ministry of Coal hailed the strong participation as a decisive vote of industry confidence in clean coal conversion technologies, expected to catalyze capital investments of Rs 2.5 lakh crore to Rs 3 lakh crore.

Approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2026, the Rs 37,500 crore initiative aims to convert domestic coal resources into value-added products like urea, methanol, ammonia, synthetic natural gas, and hydrogen. The mission is designed to curtail India’s heavy reliance on imported energy and chemical feedstocks, which accounted for approximately Rs 2.77 lakh crore during 2024-25. Aligning with the national target to achieve 100 million tonnes of coal gasification capacity by 2030, this new framework builds upon an earlier Rs 8,500 crore incentive scheme under which eight projects are already being executed. While the initial Round 1 proposals undergo technical evaluation, the Ministry of Coal has opened the Round 2 application window starting 8 September 2026, with bidding rounds opening every two months to accommodate companies in advanced preparation stages.

Government Targets 100 MT Coal Gasification by 2030

NEW DELHI. Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Satish Chandra Dubey, announced that the government has set a national target to achieve 100 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal gasification capacity by 2030 to strengthen India’s energy security. Currently, about 22.6 MT of capacity is already operational or being set up. To help reach the final goal, the government has approved a new ₹37,500 crore scheme designed to process an additional 75 MT of coal.

Through this initiative, the government is actively offering financial incentives and policy support to promote the conversion of coal into valuable resources like chemicals, methanol, and Synthetic Natural Gas.

Foundation Stone Laid for India’s First Commercial Coal Gasification Plant

BHUBANESHWAR. Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu and Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi virtually laid the foundation stone for a coal-to-ammonium nitrate plant at Lakhanpur, Odisha. Developed by Bharat Coal Gasification and Chemicals Limited—a joint venture of Coal India Limited and BHEL—the project marks India’s first commercial coal gasification plant, backed by an investment of approximately 25,000 crore rupees.

The facility will produce 6,60,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate annually for industrial use, with coal supplied by Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. Top union ministers and senior officials attended the event. This flagship project converts domestic coal into synthesis gas, reducing import dependence and driving industrial growth to support the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

This partnership aims to establish a coal-to-ammonium nitrate plant with a daily capacity of 2,000 tonnes, aligning with national goals to reduce chemical imports through coal gasification. Additionally, BHEL has approved a second joint venture with Titagarh Rail Systems Limited to provide comprehensive maintenance for Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, significantly expanding its presence in the railway services sector.

Coal Minister Calls for Time-Bound Reforms at Chintan Shivir

Kishan Reddy delivered a detailed keynote address, calling on coal companies to move decisively from intent to execution with clearly defined timelines for reform. He stressed the need for optimal utilisation of coal reserves, strengthening the Mine Developer and Operator (MDO) framework, fast-tracking First Mile Connectivity projects, improving coal quality through washeries, and ensuring effective deployment of idle equipment and assets to enhance operational efficiency.

Underscoring the strategic importance of the Chintan Shivir, the Minister placed strong emphasis on coal gasification and diversification as key drivers of future growth. He also highlighted the productive use of decoaled land for developing industrial parks and water bodies, along with completing scientific mine closure activities within the next two years. These measures, he said, are critical to reinforcing India’s energy security while ensuring sustainable and environmentally responsible growth in the coal sector.
