Bengaluru,8 December 2025 : At the Global Energy Leaders’ Summit in Puri today, Shri Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA), underscored IREDA’s pivotal role in supporting Odisha’s clean-energy transition and advancing India’s sustainability agenda.

Speaking at the panel on “Green and Clean: Balancing Ecology & Economy,” CMD, IREDA emphasized that, from India’s perspective of RE development, decarbonisation and the energy transition, responsibility cannot rest only with leaders of the country or corporate leadership. Leaders at every level- States, districts, panchayats, villages, and even within families must collectively shoulder the responsibility of achieving net zero. He stressed that this can be realised only through a holistic approach that enables a robust ecosystem supporting both renewable-energy development and ecological balance.

He highlighted that IREDA, India’s largest pure-play green lender, has sanctioned over ₹2.7 lakh crore and disbursed more than ₹1.7 lakh crore nationwide, supported by robust governance, digital paperless processes, and industry- leading asset-quality. This performance, he noted, continues to attract substantial interest from global and domestic climate-finance investors.

Emphasising the growing importance of circular-economy practices, carbon markets, biodiversity offsets, and climate finance, Shri Das said these tools are now essential for achieving sustainable and inclusive economic growth. Odisha, a major steel and aluminium producer, is well positioned to adopt circular manufacturing, including metals recycling and green hydrogen integration, enabling the production of premium green steel for export and boosting state GDP.

He also highlighted the potential of a Green Hydrogen Highway across Odisha, supported by more than 7 MTPA of announced green ammonia capacity and several industrial clusters. Co-locating hydrogen production with steel, aluminium, cement, and chemical units, he said, could unlock significant industrial efficiency and competitiveness.

On carbon markets, he noted that Odisha’s extensive forests and India’s largest mangrove ecosystem provide unique opportunities for climate-finance mobilisation through advanced Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) and digital carbon registries.

Reaffirming IREDA’s commitment, Shri Das said the agency has already disbursed over ₹2,400 crore in Odisha, with a loan book of about ₹1,800 crore across Hydro, Solar, Ethanol, and Manufacturing. He added that IREDA stands ready to finance shared hydrogen infrastructure, plug-and-play RE parks, distributed solar, and foreign-currency loans through its GIFT City subsidiary.

“Circularity, climate finance, and nature-positive development must move together, IREDA stands ready to partner with Odisha to deliver sustainable, community-centred growth for the future,” he said.

The event was graced by the Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha, Shri Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, and Shri Vishal Kumar Dev, Principal Secretary (Energy), Government of Odisha, along with senior officials from various states, developers, academia, researchers, and other dignitaries.

Along with Shri Das, the panel discussion featured Ms. Lena Backer, Former Enforcement Director, Government of Sweden and Chairperson for Life, The Royal Foundation for Peace Global Fund; Prof. Madhavi Srinivasan, Executive Director, Energy Research Institute, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore; and moderated by Dr. Dhruba Purkayastha, Advisor (Climate and Energy), Observer Research Foundation.

Organised by the Government of Odisha in association with the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and IIT Kanpur, the summit was held from 5–7 December.

Shri Das highlighted India’s remarkable progress in renewable energy, noting that the country’s installed renewable capacity had reached 237 GW by July 2025, with 50% of its installed power capacity coming from non-fossil fuel sources—achieved five years ahead of schedule. To meet the 2030 target of 500 GW, he emphasized the need for annual additions of approximately 50 GW of renewable energy.

On manufacturing, Shri Das underscored the leap from 38 GW of solar module capacity in FY24 to 100 GW in 2025, marking a shift from near-total import dependence to a pathway of self-sufficiency across the value chain. While challenges remain in upstream components like polysilicon and wafers, India is poised to meet domestic demand and support other developing nations.

He stressed the importance of Green Energy Corridors and faster land conversion, citing Karnataka’s streamlined approval process as an example. Addressing systemic gaps, he called for reforms in DISCOMs, smart metering, payment security, and enforcement of Renewable Purchase Obligations (RPOs).

On financing, Shri Das emphasized the need to mobilize ₹30 lakh crore by 2030 through deepening bond markets and strengthening NBFCs. He reaffirmed IREDA’s leadership, having financed over 30 GW, and its mission to catalyze clean energy financing nationwide.

Bengaluru, 3rd April 2025 : Shri Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman & Managing Director, Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Limited (IREDA), today participated in a high-level panel discussion on “Financing Mechanism for Energy Transition” during the 24th Foundation Day of the Petroleum Planning & Analysis Cell (PPAC).

The session moderated by Mr. Gurpreet Chugh, MD-India, ICF featured distinguished speakers, including Smt. Praveena Rai, MD & CEO, MCX; Smt. Rajasree, Economic Advisor, MoEFCC; Smt. Vibhuti Garg, Director (South Asia), IEEFA, alongside Shri Pradip Kumar Das. The session explored a broad spectrum of issues, including the scale of investment required for India’s energy transition, available funding sources, major challenges in mobilizing capital, and critical policy measures needed to bridge the financing gap.

During the discussion, Shri Das emphasized that India’s energy transition will require investments in the range of ₹30–32 lakh crore by 2030. He stressed the need for strategic policy interventions to unlock both international capital and deepen the domestic green finance market. Key among his recommendations was the creation of a globally harmonized green taxonomy to streamline and attract larger volumes of investment into the renewable energy sector. He further proposed introducing AUM-linked investment obligations for domestic pension and insurance funds, along with green financing mandates for banks, to build a robust and sustainable green capital market within the country. He further underscored that with the right credit appraisal expertise, risk in RE projects can be well managed as evidenced by miniscule write-off for IREDA since inception.

As a concluding remark, he urged the audience to pass on awareness to the next generation about the importance of sustainability and taking care of Mother Earth.

Bengaluru, 23 December 2024: Shri Pradip Kumar Das, Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency Ltd. (IREDA), addressed the Visionary Talk hosted by the 39th Indian Engineering Congress at Kolkata on 20th December 2024. In his address, CMD, IREDA spoke about the critical need for talent to drive the Renewable Energy sector both in India and Globally.

Currently, India is the 4th largest country in terms of jobs in the Renewable energy sector with ~1 million jobs of the ~16 million jobs globally. By 2050, ~43 million jobs will be needed in the RE sector globally with ~8.5 million jobs in India alone.

The Renewable energy sector will require ~20% Engineers and Researchers, ~50% skilled workers with 1-2 years of vocational training, ~25% semi-skilled workers and ~5% marketing & admin personnel. This implies a substantial need for manpower across the skill spectrum necessitating a 5-pronged approach across awareness, skill mapping, trainings & certifications, job matching as well as integrated migration and visa strategy to attract and share talent globally.

In addition to the requirement of manpower, CMD, IREDA spoke about the substantial investment needed to meet India’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) goals by 2030, estimated at Rs. 30 lakh crores over the period FY 2024-2030.

Till date, IREDA has disbursed over Rs 1.36 Lakh crores and sanctioned over Rs 2.08 Lakh Crores towards green projects. IREDA has also spearheaded the market formation for emerging RE technologies through its first-to-market financing products for emerging RE sectors such as Ethanol, EV fleet financing, Pumped Storage Hydropower, Green Ammonia amongst others.

In conclusion, Shri Das underscored IREDA’s commitment towards continuing to play a catalytic role in the growth of India’s Green Sector with a target of 10-15% contribution to India’s Renewable debt financing space.
