The number of deaths in the unprecedented violence in Delhi since Sunday has risen to 20. Stone-throwing between rival groups, arson and vandalism on Tuesday marked unrelenting violence over citizenship law protests for more than 24 hours in northeast Delhi. Over 150 people have been injured in the clashes. The violence-hit areas continue to remain tense this morning, with police and paramilitary personnel on the ground

Shops were burnt and people armed with sticks and rods were on streets in Bhajanpura, Chand Bagh and Karawal Nagar in northeast Delhi, which saw clashes between protesters for and against the controversial citizenship law spiral into unprecedented violence in the capital yesterday. The Union Home Ministry ruled out calling the army, saying adequate central forces and police are on the ground, said government sources.
Over 6,000 police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed along the stretch. This evening, police resorted to using tear gas shells in Chand Bagh to control the clashes.

The Union Home ministry has asked for no provocative statements to be made and said that Delhi’s borders with Uttar Pradesh and Haryana are being monitored to ensure no anti-social elements take advantage of the situation.

“The police personnel could not do anything because they were not getting orders from their seniors. I will raise this with Amit Shah-ji. They can’t decide whether there should be tear-gassing or lathi-charging without orders from above,” Mr Arvind Kejriwal ,Dehli CM had told reporters before his meeting.

A total of 67 companies, each with about 70 to 100 personnel, have been deployed in the Northeast district, including police and paramilitary forces. “We have enough forces on the ground. Senior police officials are constantly monitoring the situation,” said Delhi Police’s MS Randhawa this evening. “The Home Ministry is continuously supporting us. We have adequate force in place. We deny the allegations of not enough forces,” said Delhi Police chief Amulya Patnaik.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Monday urged the people of Delhi to maintain communal harmony and defeat forces that intend to divide the country on the basis of religion. Her statement came hours after violent clashes erupted between supporters of the Citizenship Amendment Act and its opponents in North East Delhi. A constable was among five people killed, and at least 50 people were injured as mobs threw stones at each other, and set shops, houses and vehicles on fire.

“There can be no space for violence in the land of Mahatma Gandhi, nor can there be any place in the country for forces that seek to impose their communal and divisive ideology on the people,” Gandhi said in a statement. She offered her condolences to the bereaved family of head constable Ratan Lal, who was killed in thSenior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the violence. “The violence today in Delhi is disturbing and must be unequivocally condemned,” he tweeted. “Peaceful protests are a sign of a healthy democracy, but violence can never be justified. I urge the citizens of Delhi to show restraint, compassion and understanding no matter what the provocation.”

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also urged the people of Delhi to maintain communal harmony.

Union Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy also said non-violent protests in a democratic country are acceptable but not violence . He says it was an attempt to dent India’s image during the visit of US President Donald Trump.

“My deepest condolences to the family of the Delhi Police Head Constable who lost his life amidst the protests in Delhi. Our @narendramodi government condemns all forms of violence and we assure a stern action against the culprits,” Reddy tweeted.

Later talking to reporters, the minister said the central government has directed the police to take action against those involved in the violence and central forces were deployed in different parts of the national capital.
