An official from the Ministry of Civil Aviation visited Kolkata Airport today to review passenger facilitation at key touchpoints, including airline counters, queue management and baggage handling. Passengers confirmed receiving timely updates on flight cancellations, with no congestion observed across terminals, and the baggage backlog reported to be almost fully cleared. The review noted strong coordination among AAI, CISF, the airport operator and airline teams, which has helped stabilise operations. Further improvements were advised in call centre responsiveness and faster grievance redressal, particularly for refund-related issues.

The ministry official also reviewed service readiness at Guwahati Airport to ensure smooth facilitation for travellers. All operational zones, including check-in, security and boarding, remained congestion-free, with airport teams proactively assisting passengers and responding swiftly to queries. Normal operations continue to remain stable under constant monitoring.

NEW DELHI. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), has taken action in 19 cases of safety-related violations by airlines so far in 2025, the government informed Parliament. In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said enforcement against non-compliance by scheduled airlines has steadily increased in recent years, rising from two cases in 2021 to 22 cases in 2024, reflecting tighter regulatory oversight. The actions include financial penalties, suspension of approvals or authorisations, and issuance of warnings.

The violations covered a wide range of safety lapses, including breaches of breath analyser norms for crew, failures in flight data monitoring, unauthorised cockpit access, use of simulators without DGCA approval, deployment of inadequately trained crew, and violations of flight duty time limitations. Maintenance-related deficiencies, such as procedural lapses and operation of aircraft with expired emergency equipment, were also noted. The Minister said the government has allocated dedicated funds to strengthen DGCA’s safety oversight and shared details of staffing vacancies across key aviation bodies, including DGCA, AAI, BCAS and air traffic control services, to address regulatory and safety challenges.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has launched proceedings to suspend or cancel the registrations of drones listed with misleading details on its Digital Sky platform. Investigations revealed that over 8,700 Chinese drones were wrongly categorised as “Model RPAS” a category meant only for research, testing, or recreation.

Many of these drones reportedly entered India without mandatory import authorisation from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), violating the 2021 ban on drone imports.

The DGCA has directed owners of such drones to submit written explanations with supporting documents including invoices, DGFT permits, images, and certifications within one month from August 12, 2025. Operating drones with suspended or cancelled Unique Identification Numbers (UINs) will attract penal action under the Drone Rules, 2021 and the Aircraft Act, 1934.

Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, has reaffirmed the Government’s unwavering commitment to passenger safety, convenience, and operational continuity in the aviation sector. In light of recent disruptions, including post-accident checks and geopolitical airspace closures, the Minister conducted a comprehensive video conference with Airport Directors across India to strengthen preparedness and on-ground passenger support mechanisms. Emphasis was placed on real-time coordination with airlines, ensuring essential passenger amenities such as food, water, and seating, and deploying sufficient personnel to proactively manage grievances.

During a high-level review with the Chairman & Managing Director of Air India, the Minister addressed concerns surrounding operational challenges due to global airspace restrictions and enhanced safety protocols. Air India is temporarily scaling down operations and restructuring its flight schedules. The Minister directed the airline to prioritize transparent communication, swift passenger redressal, and empathetic customer service, especially during cancellations or delays. Airlines have been instructed to handle rebookings and refunds efficiently and keep passengers informed through reliable channels.

Meetings with senior leadership of SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Akasa were also convened to assess fleet performance, safety oversight, passenger convenience, and overall communication strategy. A key outcome of these discussions was the institutionalization of periodic reviews with airlines to enhance monitoring, ensure accountability, and sustain operational resilience across the sector.

On the matter of flight safety investigations, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has formally launched a probe into the Air India crash near Ahmedabad. With support from international agencies like the NTSB and the aircraft OEM, recovery and analysis of black boxes are progressing. The Ministry stressed the importance of avoiding speculation and affirmed that decisions related to data analysis will be taken with due consideration to technical and security requirements. The investigation continues with full transparency, in line with international standards.

Minister Kinjarapu reiterated that passenger safety and comfort remain the Ministry’s highest priority. He called for collective responsibility among all aviation stakeholders to maintain operational stability and uphold public trust. As Indian aviation navigates through challenging times, the focus will remain firmly on safety, responsiveness, and a seamless passenger experience

Over the past 11 years, India’s civil aviation industry has experienced a remarkable transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, establishing itself as a crucial pillar of the nation’s infrastructure development. Starting from just 74 operational airports in 2014, the number has more than doubled to 160 by March 2025, encompassing 145 airports, 13 heliports, and 2 water aerodromes. A significant focus has been on regional connectivity and inclusive growth, exemplified by the UDAN scheme, which has operationalized 625 new air routes connecting 88 underserved airports and benefiting over 1.51 crore passengers. The scheme has received over ₹5,000 crore in funding, targeting difficult terrains like the Northeast, tribal belts, and hilly regions, and has facilitated the operation of several greenfield airports such as Durgapur, Shirdi, Kannur, and others, boosting regional tourism and trade.

Innovations, Inclusivity, and Future Outlook

Digital reforms have played a pivotal role in enhancing efficiency, with the eGCA platform digitizing nearly 300 aviation services and Digi Yatra enabling seamless travel for over 5.2 crore passengers via facial recognition. Modern security measures like biometric AEP and paperless e-BCAS have further streamlined airport operations. The sector’s growth is also evident in the burgeoning drone ecosystem, with over 32,000 drones registered and more than 26,000 remote pilot certificates issued, supported by new policies and industrial initiatives such as the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, aimed at modernizing aviation laws and promoting indigenous manufacturing. Flagship schemes like Krishi UDAN, Lifeline UDAN (launched during COVID-19), and HEMS (India’s first air ambulance pilot project in Uttarakhand) are addressing critical needs in agriculture, emergency response, and healthcare. Social inclusion initiatives are also prioritized, with India leading globally in women pilots (15%) and aiming to reach 25% women workforce in aviation by 2025. Passenger services have been further improved, with baggage turnaround times reduced to under 30 minutes at major airports, and affordable UDAN Yatri Cafés launched to serve travelers. Recent cabinet approvals for major expansion projects, including upgrades in Varanasi, and new civil enclaves at Bihta and Bagdogra, signal robust investment in infrastructure. Overall, India’s civil aviation sector is poised to play a vital role in realizing the vision of Viksit Bharat@2047, driving economic growth, enhancing connectivity, and fostering national integration.
