New Delhi, June 9, 2026: As climate change continues to impact businesses, agriculture, and local communities, sustainability interventions focused on water resilience, renewable energy, and circularity are delivering measurable outcomes on the ground. Against this backdrop, Pernod Ricard India (PRI) through its foundation has strengthened its integrated climate action approach, reaching over 5 lakh people across 13 states and three Union Territories through community programmes spanning water stewardship, agriculture, and livelihoods.

At the core of these efforts is the company’s Water, Agriculture and Livelihoods (WAL) programme, which focuses on improving water availability, enabling climate-resilient farming, and enhancing rural incomes in water-stressed regions. The initiative supports 22,430 farmers, with the adoption of regenerative agricultural practices and efficient irrigation systems leading to a 15–20% increase in crop yields and an 18–22% reduction in input costs.

Strengthening its water stewardship agenda, PRI has replenished more than 3.3 times the water used across its operations through large-scale groundwater recharge initiatives. Since 2019, the company has developed 2,410 groundwater recharge structures, creating a cumulative water recharge potential of over 3,339 million litres. In FY 2024–25 alone, these interventions generated more than 630 million litres of water potential, benefiting over 20,000 community members across 28 villages in eight states.

Commenting on the PRI’s climate action journey, a spokesperson for Pernod Ricard India said, “Climate action today must move beyond intent and create measurable impact at both environmental and community levels. At Pernod Ricard India, our focus is on building long-term resilience through integrated interventions across water stewardship, renewable energy, regenerative agriculture, circularity, and rural livelihoods. As climate challenges continue to evolve, scalable and collaborative solutions will play a critical role in creating sustainable ecosystems for the future.”

Alongside community-led initiatives, PRI continues to advance sustainability across its operations. Today, 98% of energy requirements across its distilleries are met through renewable sources such as biomass, while all production sites and offices operate on 100% renewable electricity under its global RE100 commitment. Since FY2018, the company has achieved a 24% reduction in water consumption intensity, surpassing its FY2030 target ahead of schedule.

The company’s focus on circularity is reflected through its #OneForOurPlanet initiative, under which PRI has eliminated permanent mono-cartons—resulting in a reduction of over 8,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually and saving nearly 2.95 lakh trees each year, while expanding the use of recyclable and compostable materials.

These initiatives reflect Pernod Ricard India’s integrated approach to sustainability, combining environmental stewardship with community development to create long-term, measurable impact.

As business increasingly plays a crucial role in addressing climate change, Pernod Ricard India remains committed to scaling solutions that resonate with natural resources, strengthening community resilience and creating lasting impact for future generations.

Mumbai, June 5, 2026: As the world prepares to mark World Environment Day on June 5, Mr. Rajesh Gupta, Founder and Managing Director of Recyclekaro, India’s leading end-to-end lithium-ion battery and e-waste recycling enterprise, has issued a clarion call for a nationwide commitment to responsible electronic waste disposal. In a statement released today, Mr. Gupta urged citizens, policymakers and industry to recognize that the planet’s accelerating electrification, driven by the proliferation of artificial intelligence, data centres, connected devices and electric vehicles, is generating a waste stream whose scale and complexity will dwarf anything humanity has managed before.

“The world is becoming more electronic by the day. Every new AI model, every new connected device, every electric vehicle on the road adds to a mountain of e-waste that is growing faster than our capacity to handle it responsibly. On this World Environment Day, I urge every Indian to take a simple but profound pledge: to never let an old phone, a spent battery or a discarded appliance end up in a landfill or with an informal scrap dealer. These are not just waste. They are concentrated deposits of lithium, cobalt, nickel and rare earth elements, minerals that are fundamental to our nation’s energy security, our digital infrastructure and our industrial future,” Mr. Gupta said.

Mr. Gupta, whose company operates one of India’s largest lithium-ion battery recycling facilities with technology that achieves over 95 percent recovery efficiency and 98 percent purity in extracted materials, pointed to the enormous strategic opportunity embedded in the country’s waste stream. “When we irresponsibly discard e-waste, we are not just harming the planet, we are throwing away the very building blocks of nation building. The critical minerals locked inside old batteries and circuit boards can reduce our dependence on imports, strengthen our manufacturing base and power our green transition. But when they are burnt in open yards or dissolved in acid by unregulated operators, they poison our soil, contaminate our groundwater and enter our food chain. The damage is irreparable and cumulative,” he warned.

Addressing India’s youth directly, Mr. Gupta made a case for redirecting entrepreneurial energy towards hard industries. “Our young generation is extraordinarily talented, but too much of that talent flows into software, apps and services. We need builders. We need young Indians to look at critical mineral recycling, sustainable mining and electronics manufacturing not as legacy industries but as the frontiers of the next economy. These are sectors where intellectual challenge meets national purpose. A venture that figures out how to extract battery-grade lithium from black mass at scale is solving a problem as complex and as valuable as anything in Silicon Valley,” he said.

The imperative for formalising and scaling the e-waste recycling sector has never been more urgent. India generates over 1.7 million tonnes of e-waste annually, a figure that is projected to cross 5 million tonnes by 2030 as digital penetration deepens and device lifecycles shorten. Yet barely 30 percent of this volume is processed through formal, environmentally sound channels. The remainder flows into the informal sector, where crude extraction methods recover only a small fraction of valuable materials while releasing toxic heavy metals into the environment. The Union Cabinet’s Rs 1,500 crore incentive scheme under the National Critical Mineral Mission is designed to change this equation, but policy alone cannot solve the collection challenge. Without a cultural shift in how citizens dispose of their electronics, the most sophisticated recycling plants will run dry of feedstock while the waste continues to poison the land.

“World Environment Day is not a celebration. It is a reminder that the planet’s patience is finite. The age of AI and ubiquitous electronics is not something that is coming. It is already here. Every Indian who owns a phone, a laptop, an EV is part of this story. The only question is whether we will be responsible authors of it or careless spectators to the damage it leaves behind. The pledge to recycle responsibly is among the most consequential commitments a citizen can make in 2026,” Mr. Gupta concluded.

Field visit to Someshwara Beach, Pachanady and Kadeshwalya regions, and Bantwal MRF marks an early milestone in translating a three-year programme into measurable on-ground impact

Mangaluru, 3 June 2026: Real estate builds cities. But cities exist within ecosystems, and for too long, the industry has taken more than it has returned. The Karnataka Zero Waste Initiative is Sattva Group’s attempt to change that equation. On 23 May, Shivam Agarwal, Vice President, Strategy, Sattva Group, and Aditya Siroya, Co-Founder and Advisor, rePurpose Global, led a full-day field visit across Someshwara Beach, Pachanady and Kadeshwalya, and the Bantwal Material Recovery Facility, walking the coastline that this programme has committed to restore.

Launched on Earth Day 2026 in partnership with Knowledge Realty Trust, the initiative is a three-year commitment to recover 3.5–4.5 million kilograms of waste. It will bring 80,000 households into formal waste management systems, some of them for the very first time, reduce plastic leakage across 50 coastal villages, and support 200 waste workers; predominantly women with dignified livelihoods and skills for the future.

The day began at Someshwara Beach. Plastic accounts for a disproportionate share of what washes up on Karnataka’s shores, a problem that is visible, chronic, and solvable. Shivam and Aditya joined approximately 40 community volunteers in a direct clean-up effort, recovering over 250 kilograms of waste in a single drive.

Shivam Agarwal, Vice President – Strategy, Sattva Group, said “You can talk about sustainability in boardrooms and earnings calls. But standing on a beach, collecting plastic with forty people who live here that’s where it becomes real. This is where the work happens, and this is where we intend to show up.”

The visit then moved through Kadeshwalya village, where community representatives walked the team through household waste collection systems and segregation practices already in place. The team also assessed infrastructure needs along the Netravathi river, a critical intervention point before plastic reaches the sea. The day concluded at the Bantwal MRF, where the team spent time with waste workers who are the backbone of the entire system.

Jiji Thomas, Head – ESG & Sustainability, Knowledge Realty Trust, said “At Knowledge Realty Trust, we are committed to creating value that extends beyond our buildings and into the communities around us. The outcomes achieved through the first phase of the Repurpose Initiative demonstrate how collaborative action can drive meaningful environmental and social impact. We are encouraged by the progress made and remain committed to supporting initiatives that create cleaner, more sustainable communities for the future.”

The numbers from the initiative’s first months tell a clear story: over 1.5 lakh kilograms of dry waste recovered, more than 50,000 kilograms of low-value plastic ethically processed, 20 waste workers now supported, and active engagement with 30+ village gram panchayats with critical backing from the Dakshina Kannada Zila Panchayat and Mangala Resource Management.

Aditya Siroya, Co-Founder and Advisor, rePurpose Global, added “What we saw today reinforced both the scale of the challenge and the importance of building solutions designed to last. It’s encouraging to see businesses like Sattva stepping forward with real ambition — not just commitments on paper, but investment in systems that can scale. Through this partnership, we’re not only reducing plastic leakage locally; we’re building a model for environmental leadership that can extend far beyond Karnataka.”

By the end of 2026, the Karnataka Zero Waste Initiative aims to recover over 10 lakh kilograms of dry waste including 4 lakh kilograms of plastic, improve livelihoods for 60 waste workers, and run awareness and capacity-building programmes across at least 15 villages in Dakshina Kannada.

Karnataka has 320 kilometres of coastline. This is where the work begins.

NEW DELHI. Union Minister Jitendra Singh said India has earned over Rs 4,000 crore from scrap, including e-waste, highlighting the growing economic value of waste under the government’s cleanliness initiatives. Speaking at the Global Symposium on Resource Efficiency and Circular Economy in New Delhi, he noted a global shift towards a circular economy where waste is increasingly treated as a valuable resource.

He emphasised that recycling, biotechnology and innovation are driving this transition, turning materials like plastic, used cooking oil and industrial by-products into useful inputs such as biofuels and construction materials. Industries that once spent on waste disposal are now generating revenue, reflecting a major shift in how resources are utilised.

The Minister added that the circular economy is creating opportunities not only for industries but also for startups, MSMEs and households, supporting livelihoods and sustainable growth. He said these developments will play a key role in strengthening green technologies and helping India move towards its net-zero emissions target by 2070.

PHD Chamber of Commerce, in association with Metal X, hosted the National Conclave on “Reimagining India’s Scrap and Recycling Market” on 20th February 2026. Designed as a high-level policy and industry platform, the conclave convened an influential cross-section of stakeholders — including senior government officials, regulators, public sector enterprises, industry captains, recyclers, financiers, and technology providers — to chart a transformative roadmap for one of India’s most critical yet underserved sectors.

The conclave served as a pivotal forum to deliberate on the structural reforms necessary to bring India’s fragmented scrap and recycling markets into the mainstream economy. Discussions centered on streamlining the recycling industry, strengthening transparency, improving governance frameworks, and building institutional trust across the recycling value chain — laying the groundwork for a more organised, efficient, and globally competitive ecosystem.

The conclave commenced with a welcome address from Dr. Jatinder Singh, Deputy Secretary General, PHDCCI. Welcoming distinguished delegation of government officials, regulators, industry leaders, recyclers, financiers, and technology providers, Dr Singh expressed confidence that the collective dialogue would yield meaningful outcomes for the sector.

The discussion at the Conclave was supported by a special address and industry perspective from Mr Vijay Sharma, Chair, Minerals & Metal Committee, PHDCCI and Director, Jindal Steels.

In his address, Mr Sharma firmly stated that scrap management is no longer just a risk management issue — it is a strategic, business-driven approach centred on competitiveness, sustainability, and supply chain resilience.

He highlighted that one ton of recycled steel saves 1.1 tons of iron ore and 630 kg of coking coal, while reducing emissions by nearly 28% — making scrap an indispensable raw material that grows alongside the economy.

He identified five core challenges — fragmentation and informality, quality and standardisation, price volatility, technology and capital gaps, and a trust deficit — urging that these be addressed urgently for the sector to scale.

He called for scrap to be recognised as a strategic commodity, advocating for ecosystem formalisation through scrap processing clusters, integration of informal collectors into formal value chains, technology-led digital infrastructure, and structured financing linked to ESG and green finance frameworks.

Mr Alok Sahay, Secretary General and Executive Head, Indian Steel Association, while delivering a special address noted – While integrated steel players maintain an excellent record in segregated scrap usage — an effective tool for progressive cost reduction — India’s continued investment in blast furnace production remains an economic necessity given the country’s growth aspirations.

He contextualised the global picture, noting that of the 2 billion tonnes of steel produced annually worldwide, only 600 million tonnes comes from scrap, with hydrogen-based alternatives still expensive and high-grade DRI iron ore limited in India.

He highlighted that India’s carbon intensity stands at 2.55 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel, making scrap’s immediate 28% emission reduction one of the most practical short-term decarbonisation solutions available — far more accessible than the expensive long-term pathways.

Presenting India’s growth trajectory, he noted that steel production has surged from 25 million tonnes to 165 million tonnes, with targets of 300 million tonnes by 2030, 500 million tonnes by 2047, and 700 million tonnes by 2070 — making scrap strategically indispensable.

He also pointed to a significant gap and opportunity — India’s scrap-based production stands at just 22%, compared to 70% in the US and 55% in the EU — while flagging that India’s 8 million tonne scrap import dependency faces growing risk as OECD countries consider export restrictions, making domestic scrap development a matter of supply chain urgency.

Speaking at the conclave, Dr. Ajay Mathur, Ex-Director General, Indian Solar Alliance opened with a striking reflection — the last thing he disposed of was a rusted car fender handed to a “kabadwala” — using this to spotlight the informal yet indispensable network that has quietly sustained India’s recycling ecosystem for decades.

He called for a fundamental reframing: scrap is not waste — it is urban ore, deferred value, and future raw material. He identified three structural challenges — informality (90% of recycling in hazardous, low-recovery conditions), the segregation crisis, and a deep trust deficit.

He outlined three critical shifts — formalisation of “kabadwalas” as green entrepreneurs, a digital nervous system for traceability and pricing transparency, and policy enablement through recycling parks and minimum recycled content mandates.

He concluded that getting this right unlocks decarbonisation, 10 million green jobs, and strategic autonomy for India.

Mr Nilotpal Pathak, Director, theMetalX in his address asserted that recycling must be repositioned from a secondary activity to a primary economic activity — essential for a country growing at nearly 8% annually with rising material demand.

Drawing from his experience building BSE Agricultural Markets, he highlighted how transparent, traceable marketplace infrastructure brought informal trade into the mainstream — and how MetalX represents the next step in that evolution for scrap.

He outlined MetalX’s core proposition: creating a transparent, BSE-governed digital marketplace generating traceable transaction data to improve creditworthiness, enable structured financing, and mainstream recycling within ESG and sustainability finance frameworks — a humble but decisive first step toward organising India’s informal recycling ecosystem.

Dr. Jatinder Singh, Deputy Secretary General, PHDCCI, highlighted that India stands at a critical crossroads in its pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals and circular economy, with the recycling industry playing a pivotal enabling role.

He pointed to key structural challenges hobbling the sector — with 60–70% of the market operating informally, contamination rates of 25–30%, and price volatility constraining MSME growth. He called for urgent focus on market formalisation, digital transformation, access to finance, and supply chain transparency.

Referencing the Union Budget 2026, he noted that duty waivers and incentives align well with the conclave’s objectives, positioning India as a potential global recycling hub and a nearly USD 17 billion market opportunity under Swachh Bharat 2.0.

The event also marked a significant milestone with the official launch of the MetalX – India’s first institutionally governed neutral digital marketplace, unveiled as a purpose-built market platform designed to bring price discovery, standardized trade workflows, traceability, and institutional governance to the scrap ecosystem. The platform aims to enable transparent transactions, compliant trade execution, and data-driven market insights, while remaining neutral to buyers and sellers. By integrating technology with strong governance standards, theMetalX seeks to unlock wider participation from MSMEs, large corporates, and financial institutions, and support the growth of India’s circular economy.

The conclave drew a distinguished gathering of industry leaders, policymakers, domain experts, and academia, fostering rich cross-sectoral dialogue on the future of India’s scrap and recycling ecosystem.

NEW DELHI. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has approved detailed guidelines for the injection of Compressed Biogas (CBG) into Natural Gas Pipeline (NGPL) and City Gas Distribution (CGD) networks, establishing a standardized framework for the safe and efficient integration of CBG into authorised natural gas infrastructure. The move marks a significant step toward enabling grid-based evacuation of CBG and addressing a critical gap in the biogas ecosystem by ensuring assured market access, improving project viability, facilitating financing, and accelerating nationwide scale-up of CBG production. Developed through an extensive consultative process involving a Technical Committee of CBG producers, CGD entities and NGPL operators, followed by public consultations and an Open House discussion, the final guidelines incorporate stakeholder inputs on quality analysers, calibration, safety instrumentation, cluster-based connectivity under the DPI Scheme and Integrity Management Systems. The framework covers design and technical standards aligned with T4S safety regulations, CBG quality specifications referencing Access Code Regulations and BIS standards, installation procedures, operational and maintenance protocols, and safety requirements including odorization and control systems, along with illustrative schematic drawings to ensure uniform implementation. The integration of CBG into the natural gas grid is expected to boost domestic green gas availability, reduce LNG imports, strengthen energy security, support climate goals, promote waste-to-energy utilisation of agricultural and municipal residues, and generate socio-economic benefits such as enhanced farmer income, rural employment and advancement of a circular economy.

Ardee Industries Limited, one of India’s leading players in the circular economy, has been recognised with the Battery Recycling Excellence Award 2026 – Recycler of the Year at the International Material Recycling Conference (IMRC) 2026 held in Jaipur. The Battery Recycling Excellence Award 2026 recognizes industry leaders who have demonstrated outstanding innovation, safety, and scalability in recycling electric vehicle and consumer electronics batteries. This award affirms the company’s role in environmentally responsible recovery and recycling of end-of-life energy storage products and non-ferrous scrap, while reclaiming critical resources from waste streams.

Ardee Industries Limited has also reached a significant global milestone with the listing of its pure lead brand, “Ardee Lead 9997”, on the London Metal Exchange (LME), a global benchmark platform. LME has approved Ardee Lead 9997 as “good delivery” against its lead contract with effect from December 23, 2025, which reflects the Company’s adherence to stringent international standards relating to product quality, consistency, traceability and responsible production practices.

Ardee Industries Limited operates at the intersection of sustainability, resource security and industrial growth. By closing the loop across collection, recycling and production, the company contributes to reducing India’s dependence on imported critical metals, strengthens domestic resource security and lowers the environmental footprint of industrial growth. With an installed recycling capacity of 104,025 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) as of March 31, 2025, and a strong track record of producing quality-compliant alloys, the company remains closely aligned with India’s sustainability agenda and the global transition towards a circular, resource-efficient economy.

Lead is among the most extensively recycled metals globally, capable of being re-melted numerous times without losing its properties. Over 80% of India’s lead demand is met through secondary (recycled) lead, largely derived from used lead-acid batteries (ULABs). India’s recycled lead production stood at approximately 1.26 million tonnes in FY 2025. The recycled lead ingot market in India was valued at around ₹28,800 crore in FY 2025, driven by applications in automotive batteries, inverters and UPS systems, telecom infrastructure, data centres, renewable energy storage and other industrial uses such as cable sheathing and pigments.

Ardee Industries operates a manufacturing facility spread across approximately 7.61 acres in Tirupati district, Andhra Pradesh. The facility is equipped with advanced rotary furnaces, refining kettles, casting machines and pollution control systems designed for efficient and environmentally responsible lead recycling. The company has significantly expanded its manufacturing capacity, increasing installed capacity from 54,750 MTPA in FY 2023 to 104,025 MTPA in FY 2025 through sustained investments in recycling infrastructure.

Beyond pure lead, the company manufactures customised lead alloys by combining lead with metals such as calcium, antimony, tin, silver and cadmium to meet diverse customer requirements across automotive and non-automotive sectors. As part of its forward-looking strategy, Ardee Industries plans to diversify further by converting plastic scrap generated during recycling into plastic granules and by expanding refining and recycling capabilities for tin and copper waste.

With strong growth expected across recycled plastics, tin and copper, and rising demand from Southeast Asia and South Korea for recycled lead ingots, Ardee Industries’ manufacturing facility has been strategically set up near the port to cater to both domestic and international markets in recycled lead. The award at IMRC 2026 reflects the company’s sustained commitment to circular economy and scalable, responsible recycling.
