It was first identified in Kollam district of Kerala on May 6, leading the Central government to issue an advisory to states. Young children are at increased risk of exposure to tomato flu, and if not controlled and prevented, the transmission might lead to serious consequences by spreading in adults as well, warns a recent study published in The Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal. Apart from Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Odisha have reported cases of tomato flu.

Tomato Flu: Children at risk

As viral infections are common in this age group, Children are at increased risk of exposure to tomato flu and spread is likely to be through close contact. Young children are also prone to this infection through use of nappies, touching unclean surfaces, as well as putting things directly into the mouth,” read the report published on August 17. “…If the outbreak of tomato flu in children is not controlled and prevented, transmission might lead to serious consequences by spreading in adults as well,” it added.

Though considered non-life-threatening, vigilant management is desirable to prevent further outbreaks, especially because of the dreadful experience of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the study.

Although the virus shows symptoms similar to those of Covid-19 – including fever, fatigue, body aches and rashes on skin — the report in the medical journal suggests that it could be an after-effect of chikungunya or dengue fever in children rather than a viral infection.

“The virus could also be a new variant of the viral hand, foot, and mouth disease, a common infectious disease targeting mostly children aged 1-5 years and immunocompromised adults…,” the Lancet study explained.

As of now, no antiviral drugs or vaccines are available for the treatment or prevention of tomato flu.

WHO warn for measles outbreaks
An increase in measles cases in January and February 2022 is a worrying sign of a heightened risk for the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases and could trigger larger outbreaks, particularly of measles affecting millions of children in 2022, warn WHO and UNICEF.

Pandemic-related disruptions, increasing inequalities in access to vaccines, and the diversion of resources from routine immunization are leaving too many children without protection against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases.

The risk for large outbreaks has increased as communities relax social distancing practices and other preventive measures for COVID-19 implemented during the height of the pandemic. In addition, with millions of people being displaced due to conflicts and crises including in Ukraine, Ethiopia, Somalia and Afghanistan, disruptions in routine immunization and COVID-19 vaccination services, lack of clean water and sanitation, and overcrowding increase the risk of vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks.

Almost 17,338 measles cases were reported worldwide in January and February 2022, compared to 9,665 during the first two months of 2021. As measles is very contagious, cases tend to show up quickly when vaccination levels decline. The agencies are concerned that outbreaks of measles could also forewarn outbreaks of other diseases that do not spread as rapidly.

Apart from its direct effect on the body, which can be lethal, the measles virus also weakens the immune system and makes a child more vulnerable to other infectious diseases like pneumonia and diarrhoea, including for months after the measles infection itself among those who survive. Most cases occur in settings that have faced social and economic hardships due to COVID-19, conflict, or other crises, and have chronically weak health system infrastructure and insecurity.

After Subhash Batham, a murderer accused out on bail, was killed and the children brought out of his house by the police, his wife was caught by locals and assaulted. Bricks and stones were thrown at her. She reportedly suffered injuries all over and was taken to hospital in a critical state.

All 23 children are safe. One of the children, a one-year-old infant, was released late on Thursday night, much before the man was killed.

It is not known yet whether the wife was in on Batham’s plan. The police suspect she was.

An accused in a 2001 murder, he was described as an aggressive and crass man prone to violence.

On Thursday, he invited some children from the village to his house on the pretext of celebrating his one-year-old daughter’s birthday.

When the children were all inside, Batham bolted the doors and held everybody at gunpoint.

When their children did not return for some time, neighbours knocked at his door and realized something was wrong.

When Batham began shooting at them, they frantically dialed the police. When the police arrived, he fired at them too and threw a crude bomb.

Commandos of the Anti-Terrorism Squad and a police team also arrived at the spot.

Hours of negotiation on phone calls did not work and Batham refused to free the children. The police suspect he was drunk throughout the encounter.

Finally, after midnight, a police team decided to attack him and stormed the house.

Batham, who police claim could also be mentally disturbed, was heard shouting that he was innocent of the crime he had been accused of.

He was shot dead. As villagers, including the parents of the children held captive, saw his wife trying to run away, they started throwing stones and bricks at her and thrashed her. The police had to take her to safety and admit her in hospital. She died early this morning.

“She had head injuries and was bleeding when she was taken to hospital. She had tried to run,” said senior police officer Mohit Agarwal.

Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat said Young children being radicalised need to be identified and placed in de-radicalisation camps.

Speaking in an event he said, “Radicalisation can be countered. We saw it happening in Kashmir… Today, we see that young children are also being radicalised. They need to be identified and then we need to put them in de-radicalisation camps. The Indian army has not been using hard tactics… Pellet guns are a non-lethal practice. It is sparingly used,” he said.

He added that the “ideology of radicalisation” needs to addressed along with an end to “online radicalisation”.

“As long as there are states which sponsor terrorism, we will have to live with the menace. We need to take the bull by its horns and strike at the root cause,” he said, “If we think war on terrorism is going to end, we are wrong,” Gen Rawat said. He said the countries which are sponsoring terrorism cannot be part of global fight against terror networks.

“You cannot have partners who are partnering global war on terrorism and yet sponsoring terrorism… There has to be diplomatic isolation of those sponsoring terrorism. Any country which is sponsoring terrorism has to be taken to task,” he said.

Speaking about his new role as the chief of defence staff, India’s first, Rawat said, “I think the task is well cut out and we will be able to function within the firm framework which has been laid out for the CDS. I don’t visualise any problems. We’ve had meetings with the three (service) chiefs and a lot of decisions have already been taken in the past 15 days,” he said.

Asked whether he supports negotiations with the Taliban, he said peace talks should be initiated with everybody provided they give up the “weapon of terrorism”.

In the words of Mahatma Gandhi, Diwali is a reminder and an opportunity to “Be the change you want to see in the world!” Keeping with the spirit, Deepak Foundation’s Samaj Suraksha Sankul organized a ‘Diwali Mela’ recently. The event focused on children with special needs, marginalized women and other special causes for the upliftment of unreached and underprivileged.

People from across Vadodara joined the fest and encouraged the children and Self Help Group’s women.

Ms Archana Joshi, Director, Deepak Foundation says, “Prociding a platform for the sale of produce by women entrepreneurs, rural artisans and children with special needs is the agenda of Diwali Mela sponsored by Deepak Group. The foundation continues to achieve its goals towards welfare of poor and the unreached.”

The mela was special as all the products, from handmade candles and diyas to chocolates and embroidered bags, pouches and more. everything was done by children with special needs and women entrepreneurs.

Stand-up comedian Manan Desai graced the occasion and the guest of honour. He said, “I really like how small scale industries are promoted over here. Small ideas like ‘Krushak Mahila Producer Company’ selling Instant Khichdi is what makes startups tomorrow. I love what Deepak Foundation has done with Samaj Suraksha Sankul and I can see their vision.” He further added that he would love to associate with this cause to generate funds. Stalls like Self Help Group women’s Farsan, handmade bags by other foundations with special causes, paintings by children with special needs and food counters provided a great platform display and showcase their products.

Dr Ruchi Mehta, Incharge, Samaj Suraksha Sankul quotes, “Our modest effort to celebrate Diwali for children with special needs have brought so much joy to the children. It’s very heartwarming to see all sections of the society coming to one Mela and celebrating together. Thanks to Deepak Group for supporting this event.” With joy rides, shopping stalls, fun activities and food, the event ended up as a celebration of joy and togetherness for the children and rural marginalized women.
