कपिल सिब्बल के बाद अब सबसे वरिष्ठ नेताओं में से एक गुलाम नबी आजाद ने कहा कि हमारे लोगों का ब्लॉक स्तर पर, जिला स्तर पर लोगों के साथ कनेक्शन टूट गया है। जब कोई पदाधिकारी हमारी पार्टी में बनता है तो वो लेटर पैड छाप देता है, विजिटिंग कार्ड बना देता है, वो समझता है बस मेरा काम खत्म हो गया, काम तो उस समय से शुरू होना चाहिए। कांग्रेस नेता गुलाम नबी आजाद ने कहा कि चुनाव 5-सितारा होटल में बैठकर नहीं जीते जाते। आज नेताओं के साथ समस्या यह है कि अगर उन्हें पार्टी का टिकट मिलता है, तो वे पहले 5-सितारा होटल बुक करते हैं। अगर कहीं कोई उबड़-खाबड़ सड़क है तो वे वहां नहीं जाएंगे। जब तक ये कल्चर हम नहीं बदलेंगे, हम चुनाव नहीं जीत सकते।

गुलाम नबी आजाद ने कहा कि हम सभी नुकसान के बारे में चिंतित हैं, खासकर बिहार और उपचुनाव परिणामों के बारे में। मैं नुकसान के लिए नेतृत्व को दोष नहीं देता हूं। क्योंकि पार्टी के बड़े नेताओं का जमीनी स्तर पर संपर्क टूट गया है। ब्लॉग लेवल पर, जिला स्तर पर कार्यकर्ताओं का संबंध लोगों से टूट गया है। आदमी को पार्टी से इश्क होना चाहिए। गुलाम नबी आजाद ने शेर सुनाते हुए कहा कि ये इश्क़ नहीं आसां इतना ही समझ लीजिए, इक आग का दरिया है और डूब के जाना है।

आजाद ने कहा, ‘हमारा ढांचा कमजोर है, हमें ढांचा पहले खड़ा करना पड़ेगा। फिर उसमें कोई भी नेता हो चलेगा। सिर्फ नेता बदलने से आप कहेंगे कि पार्टी बदल जाएगी, बिहार आएगा, मध्य प्रदेश आएगा, उत्तर प्रदेश आएगा, नहीं वो सिस्टम से बदलेगा।’

हालांकि आजाद के बयान के बाद विरोध भी शुरु हो गया है .पश्चिम बंगाल से सांसद अधीर रंजन चौधरी ने तो असंतुष्ट नेताओं को पार्टी छोडने की सलाह दे दी है . लेकिन ये रास्ता नहीं है असल में दोनों तरफ के विचारों को सुनकर ही रास्ता निकलना चाहिये .

इस बयान के बारे में पूछे जाने पर  सलमान खुर्शीद ने कहा कि शार्टकट से उनका मतलब अपनी विचारधारा त्यागने से था. उन्होंने कहा, ‘‘आपको अपनी विचारधारा क्यों छोड़नी चाहिए. यदि आपकी विचारधारा मतदाताओं को आपके लिए मतदान करने के लिए राजी नहीं कर पा रही है, तो या तो आपको अपनी दुकान बंद कर देनी चाहिए या आपको इंतजार करना चाहिए. हम मतदाताओं को राजी कर रहे हैं, इसमें समय लगेगा.’’

इस बीच वित्तमंत्री रहे पी चिंदबरम ने भी पार्टी में बदलाव का सुझाव दिया है .कांग्रेस गिरती अर्थव्यवस्था और कोरोनावायरस संकट के मुद्दे होने के बावजूद अच्छी मौजूदगी नहीं जता पाई, इस पर चिदंबरम ने कहा कि ‘मुझे गुजरात, मध्य प्रदेश, उत्तर प्रदेश और कर्नाटक के उपचुनावों की चिंता ज्यादा है. यह नतीजे दिखाते हैं कि या तो पार्टी की जमीन पर संगठन के तौर पर मौजूदगी ही नहीं है, या फिर बहुत ज्यादा कम हुई है

Chidambaram has been told by the court not to travel abroad or attempt to get back his passport, which is now with the authorities. He has been asked to appear before the agencies when requested, and send a bond worth Rs 2 lakh.

According to reports, Chidambaram reiterated in court that others named in the case have either not been arrested or had received bail. 

In October, the Supreme Court had granted bail to Chidambaram in connection with the INX Media case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). However, the Congress leader continued to be in the custody of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), which too had filed a money-laundering case on the case.

The CBI had opposed his bail plea alleging that Chidambaram was a ‘flight risk’ and had tried to “pressurise and influence” key witnesses.

The 74-year-old leader was arrested on August 21 by the CBI from his Jor Bagh residence in Delhi. Following 15 days of CBI custody, he was sent to Tihar Jail on September 5. In October, he was sent to the ED’s custody in the INX Media case.

In the same month, the CBI finally filed a chargesheet after first registering a case in 2017, charging P Chidambaram and his son Karti P Chidambaram along with other government officials. The chargesheet reportedly stated that Indrani Mukerjea allegedly paid a bribe of USD 5 million to the father-son duo through offshore payments. Indrani and Peter, directors of INX Media Private Limited, had reportedly received foreign investment of Rs 403.07 crore against approved foreign direct investment (FDI) of Rs 4.62 crore.

Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar rejected Mr. Chidambaram’s plea to release him on expiry of his police custody. The court allowed him to carry his medicines to the jail.Considering that he has Z-security, the court directed that he be kept in a separate cell.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured that there will be adequate security for Mr. Chidambaram in the jail. Chidambaram in Tihar’s Jail No. 7: Separate cell but no special facilities.

“Anticipatory bail has to be exercised sparingly in cases of economic offences. Considering the facts and circumstances, this is not a fit case to grant anticipatory bail,” the Supreme Court said, in a huge blow to Mr Chidambaram, who has spent 15 days in CBI custody.

The Enforcement Directorate has accused Mr Chidambaram of money-laundering in the case involving INX Media, which is being investigated by the CBI. The CBI accuses Mr Chidambaram of misusing his place as Finance Minister of the country in 2007 while facilitating a huge infusion of foreign funds in INX Media at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram.

The allegations against Mr Chidambaram and his son are based on the information from INX Media co-founders Peter Mukerjea and Indrani Mukerjea, who are now jailed in Mumbai in connection with the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora. Karti Chidambaram, who allegedly received kickbacks for his role in securing the foreign funds, was arrested in 2018 and released after 23 days.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had extended Mr Chidambaram’s CBI custody for two days after his lawyer said the 74-year-old leader should not be sent to Tihar jail, where arrested persons are taken when they do not get bail after police custody expires. Mr Chidambaram’s petition challenging a non-bailable warrant against him  and his ask for pre-arrest bail in the Aircel-Maxis case will also come up during the day.

The Rs. 3,500-crore Aircel-Maxis deal involves a clearance of $800 million foreign investment to the company in 2006, allegedly in exchange of kickbacks. While the approval was expected to come from a committee headed by the Prime Minister, it came illegally from the finance ministry, the CBI said.

Mr Chidambaram said that was the level of the economy. According to government data, the economic growth slowed to a seven-year low to five per cent in the April to June quarter from eight per cent a year ago.

The short video was re-tweeted by Mr Chidambaram’s son Karti Chidambaram with the comment: “P Chidambaram on the state of the economy.” Soon, the Congress tweeted the video and quipped: “A quick reminder by P Chidambaram on why he’s feared by the BJP government.”

Mr Chidambaram, who was finance minister in the Manmohan Singh-led UPA government, has often critiqued the ruling BJP on its economic policies.

He is being investicated by the CBI in connection with the INX Media case and will be in the agency’s custody till Thursday, after which the court will decide on whether to release him or extend his custody. The CBI alleges that as finance minister in 2007, Mr Chidambaram facilitated a huge infusion of overseas funds to the media company INC Media co-founded by Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram, who allegedly received kickbacks.

The Mukerjeas, who are in jail in Mumbai for the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora, have alleged to investigators that the Chidambarams helped them. Indrani has also turned approver in the case.

In CBI custody, Mr Chidambaram has been put up in a room on the ground floor of the agency’s headquarters in Delhi. If he is sent to judicial custody, he will be taken to Tihar, Asia’s largest prison facility, where he will be treated like other prisoners.

“You can’t humiliate people like this,”Mr Sibal argued, wondering what would happen if the trial court rejected the request and sent him to jail.

The court said house arrest was an option only for political prisoners. The judges, R Banumathi and AS Bopanna, also questioned why Mr Chidambaram was not making the request before the special CBI court, which has to decide on his custody.

The CBI, which is investigating allegations against Mr Chidambaram in the INX Media case, said it was the special CBI court which has to decide on where the Congress leader should be held. The agency insisted that he should be granted no protection.

Mr Chidambaram is accused by the CBI of facilitating a huge infusion of foreign funds into the media company INX Media in 2007, when he was Finance Minister, at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram, who allegedly received kickbacks for his role.

Mr Chidambaram and his son were named by INX Media co-founders Peter and Indrani Mukerjea, who are in jail in Mumbai for the murder of Indrani’s daughter Sheena Bora. Indrani Mukerjea, who turned approver in the case, reportedly revealed details of her meeting with the Chidambarams.
