Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who won a record second term today celebrated his big triumph with holi colours and sweets at the BJP’s office in Lucknow.

It was a sea of saffron as Yogi Adityanath waved victory signs at hundreds of BJP workers gathered at the party office, many waving the party’s flag. Before the counting of votes, the BJP had promised “early holi” celebrations.

“Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, today the BJP won a majority in Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur. The voters have blessed Modi-ji‘s policies of development and good governance,” the Chief Minister told the ecstatic crowd.

Today’s win catapults the saffron-wearing Yogi Adityanath even higher, to the BJP’s top rung.

The win defied predictions of anti-incumbency hitting the BJP in UP amid a devastating wave of Covid and the farmer protests.

Many see Yogi Adityanath, 49, who is known to make divisive speeches, as a Prime Minister candidate one day.

In a recent interview to Reuters, however, the priest-politician said: “I am just a monk… I will serve the people of the state till the party wants or else I will serve people through my … temple.”

BJP has scripted history in Uttar Pradesh as it retained power for the second term in India’s most populous state. While Yogi Adityanath was the CM face of the party, but the campaign was largely led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself. The BJP scored victory in Uttar Pradesh despite Akhilesh Yadav’s challenge, farm protests and caste dynamics.

In the 403-member Uttar Pradesh assembly, the BJP has won 255 seats, 53 more than the halfway mark of 202. Its allies Apna Dal(S) and Nishad Party clinched 12 and 6 seats respectively.

The Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) won 111 constituencies and its allies Rashtriya Lok Dal of Jayant Chaudhary 8 and Suheldev Bhartiya Samaj Party of Om Prakash Rajbhar grabbed 6.

While Congress managed to win two seats, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) could only get one seat despite polling 12.88 per cent votes.

The BJP’s vote share rose to 41.29 per cent as against 39.67 per cent in the 2017 assembly elections. The vote share of the SP increased from 21.82 per cent in 2017 to 32.06 per cent.

It was a high-stakes election in UP for the Bharatiya Janata Party as the state sends the highest number of 80 MPs to Lok Sabha and the party’s performance will have a bearing on the 2024 general election.

One of the four missing Congress MLAs from Madhya Pradesh has sent his resignation letter to state assembly Speaker NP Prajapati. In the letter, Hardeep Dang said despite getting the people’s mandate for a second time, he is constantly being ignored by the party. “None of the ministers are ready to work as they are part of a corrupt government,” his letter read.

Hardeep Dang was one of the 10 MLAs who were allegedly spirited away by the BJP in an effort to bring down the government on Tuesday. The Congress said it managed to recover six of the MLAs from a hotel in Gurgaon, near Delhi, after a late-night rescue operation on Tuesday.

Hardeep Dang, Raghuraj Kansana, Bisahulal Singh and Independent member Shera Bhaiya remained missing. There were rumours that they were ensconced at a five-star hotel in BJP-ruled Karnataka, which, last year, saw the Janata Dal Secular-Congress government crashing after 15 rebels crossed over to the BJP.
“I have received information about Hardeep Singh Dang’s resignation. I have not yet received any letter from him or discussed the matter in person. Until I meet him personally, making comments over it will not be appropriate,” Chief Minister Kamal Nath said.

The Kamal Nath government has 120 MLAs — four over the majority mark of 116 in the 230-member assembly. Of them, 114 are from the Congress, two from the BSP, one from the Samajwadi Party and four independents. The BJP has 107 MLAs and two seats are currently vacant. If the three other missing MLAs resign, it would bring down the number in the assembly to 224 and the majority mark to 113. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh — who hinted at such a possibility earlier this week — said the BJP was “offering Rs 25-35 crore” to the MLAs.

Insisting that the government was safe, the party alleged that it was part of the BJP’s annual effort to increase the numbers in Rajya Sabha, where they are in minority.

Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Tuesday hit out at the Congress and termed it an “unreliable” party after all six of her party MLAs switched over to the grand old party in Rajasthan.

Taking to Twitter, the former UP chief minister said: “By poaching BSP MLAs, the Congress has proved it is an unreliable party. This is a breach of trust even when the BSP was lending its unconditional support to the Congress government in Rajasthan.”

She added: “Instead of fighting with its arch rivals, the Congress always damages the parties that have helped and supported it. Hence, Congress is against Dalits, STs and OBCs and has been non-serious towards the rights of backwards.”

The BSP chief also accused the grand old party of being against the principles of Babasaheb Ambedkar, “which is why he had to resign from the post of the country’s first law minister”.

“The Congress never let Baba Saheb go to Lok Sabha and neither was he awarded the Bharat Ratna. This is very shameful and sad,” she said.

On Monday night, all six BSP MLAs wrote to state assembly Speaker CP Joshi to merge the legislative party with the Congress. MLAs Rajendra Singh Gudha, Jogendra Singh Awana, Wajib Ali, Lakhan Singh Meena, Sandeep Yadav and Deepchand said they were merging their legislative party with the Congress. “All the six BSP MLAs were in constant touch with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and today they have come into the fold of the Congress,” a Congress leader said.

“We took a decision in order to fight against communal forces and to work for the development of the state and stability of the government. Ashok ji is the best Chief Minister and no one can be better than him for Rajasthan. I was impressed with his style of working and polity,” news agency ANI quoted Udaipurwati lawmaker Rajendra Gudd.

Saying that it was difficult for them to support Congress from outside, Nadbai MLA Jogendra Singh Awana said, “We have given our resignations letter and also met CP Joshi ji and Ashok ji today. There were several challenges in front of us. On one hand, we were supporting Congress for the development of the state and on the other, we were fighting against them in elections. We all gave a thought to it. We took a decision in favour of the state.”

The Rajasthan Assembly has 200 seats. The Congress has 100 MLAs and its ally Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) has one MLA, giving it the majority to run the government. The Congress has also the outside support of 12 out of total 13 independent MLAs. Two seats are vacant.

In 2009, during Gehlot’s earlier tenure, all the six BSP MLAs had also defected to Congress. That time, the government was five short of a clear majority.

A government order said the seven-acre plot was “beneficially owned” by Mayawati’s brother Anand Kumar and his wife Vichiter Lata.

An order to seize the plot was issued on Tuesday by the Delhi-based Benami Prohibition Unit of the Income Tax department.

Mayawati recently appointed her brother as the national vice president of her Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP).

The order said Anand Kumar and his wife were benami or proxy owners of the property.

Taking to Twitter, Mayawati claimed that the ruling party is “misusing” its power to implicate members of the opposition in false cases and torturing them.

Condemning the “torture” of her brother, Mayawati, however, said the party will not be bogged down by such acts.

Recalling a similar incident from 2003, the BSP chief claimed that the BJP had opposed the party. However, it was granted relief by the Supreme Court, she said.
