Delhi and Haryana Police have issued separate travel and traffic advisories for people looking to enter or leave the national capital region, which is likely to bear the brunt of the bandh after farmers camped at junctions along the UP and Haryana borders warning they will cut off road access to the city. Traffic on National Highways 9, 19, 24, 44 and 48 will be disrupted, with either sections or the whole of these roads closed.

Farmers’ outfits are observing a Bharat Bandh (nationwide shutdown) today to protest against the controversial new agriculture laws, with several trade and transport unions extending support and almost all opposition parties too backing their demands. Farmer leaders said their strike will remain peaceful and that no shops and establishments will be forcibly closed on account of the Bandh. “There will be complete ‘Bharat bandh’ till 3 pm Tuesday, but emergency services will be allowed,” farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal told reporters. The farmer leaders had earlier announced their intention to block all roads leading to Delhi, which has emerged as the epicentre of the protests against the farm laws, and occupy all toll plazas, but on Monday said they do not want to inconvenience the common people and have, hence, kept the timing of the chakka jam (blockade) from 11am to 3 pm. The Congress, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Trinamool Congress, DMK and its allies, TRS, RJD, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party and the Left are among the political parties that are backing the strike.

It is our duty to stand in unity with farmers and stay connected to their sentiments, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut said.  ” It is no political Bandh. It is our sentiment. Farmer organisations agitating in Delhi aren’t carrying any political flag. There is no politics here and there shouldn’t be,”  Raut was quoted as saying by the ANI. He also reiterated that the government should talk to the farmers. ” If the government has a heart, be it the Home Minister or the Prime Minister, they themselves will go and talk to the farmers,” Raut said.

The farmers’ agitation in Delhi entered the twelfth day today, with a large number of farmers gathered in and around the national capital to protest against the three laws .  the Delhi Traffic Police has closed four borders including Singhu, Auchandi, Piao Maniyari and Mangesh. In a series of tweets, Traffic Police issued an advisory today, informing commuters about diverted routes.

The Agriculture Minister assured the Farmers Unions that the existing APMC is a strong organization and it will not be weakened. Mr Tomar reassured farmers representatives that the Modi Government is committed to the welfare of farmers and has taken a number of steps and pro farmers reforms. He said that MSPs have been hiked multiple times and will continue in future.

The Minister appealed to the Farmers Unions that they should give up their agitation and solve their grievances through talks and dialogue. He appealed that children and elders should be allowed to go home in view of the cold and Covid.

Shri Narendra Singh Tomar also enumerated the measures that the Modi Government has taken for the welfare of farmers like significant increase in budgetary allocation for Agriculture, the allocation under PM Kisan Yojna in which farmer gets direct income support;the Rs 1 Lakh crore agri-infrastructure fund;historic MSP hikes;measures taken for procurement and technology upgradation. These and other measures underline the commitment of the Government towards farmers of India

The strike has been called to protest against the Central government’s “anti-labour” and anti-people policies. About 60 organisations of students and elected office-bearers of some universities have also decided to join the strike with an agenda to raise voice against increased fee structure and commercialization of education.
The unions are also against privatisation in railways, corporatisation of 49 defence production units and forced merger of banks. In Mumbai from 11 am to 4 pm massive rallies of workers from various undertakings will be taken out .

TUJAC, Maharashtra gave an official statement which read: “Ten central trade unions and Bhartiya Kamgar Sena in Maharashtra state will be observing nation-wide strike on January 8, 2020. Almost 25 crore people will participate in the strike to protest against the Central government’s “anti labour” and anti people policies. Trade unions INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU, AIUTUC, TUCC, SEWA, AICCTU, LPF, UTUC and Central/State Government employees along with various sectoral independent federations and associations had adopted a declaration in September last year to go on a nationwide strike on January 8, 2020. We expect the participation of not less than 25 crores of working people in the forthcoming strike, to be followed by many more actions seeking reversal of the anti-worker policies of the central government.”
