quarantine team of health workers and policemen was targeted last evening in west Bengaluru by a large mob of about 200 locals when the officials reached a neighbourhood to take 58 people who were believed to have come in contact with three coronavirus patients. They were forced to retreat leaving behind 33 people who had to be taken to the isolation units.

A ward in West Bengaluru’s Padarayanapura locality was sealed last week after three people, who had attended a congregation in Delhi’s Nizammudin in March, tested positive for coronavirus. The congregation held by Tablighi Jamaat has set off the largest cluster of COVID-19 cases in India; more than 4,000 cases across the country have been linked to the congregation so far.

As the team reached the neighbourhood at around 7 pm, angry locals started removing tin sheets that were erected as barricades to mark the sealed area.

In videos shot on mobile phones, the locals are seen damaging tents installed for healthcare workers and policemen.

Fifty-four people have been arrested over the incident so far, including those who had to be taken to isolation units. Among those arrested is a woman who is believed to have instigated the group of locals.
“No healthcare worker was attacked… only some damage to the property has been reported. The locals were demanding on-the-spot testing,” senior police officer B Ramesh said. It took a few hours for the officials concerned to bring the situation under control.

Union Minister Prahlad Joshi condemned the attack in a tweet

Several attacks have been reported in the past few weeks against the health workers and those in the frontline in the fight against coronavirus.

Last week, a group of sanitation worker in Madhya Pradesh were attacked by a mob of locals in Dewas district when they went to a neighbourhood to clean the streets. In Bihar, four such cases of attack on health workers were reported across the state within 24 hours on Thursday.

Across India, more than 17,000 cases of COVID-19 have been reported, more than 500 people have died

Many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this morning a day after the government imposed severe restrictions across the country amid to prevent further spread of coronavirus that has infected over 400 people in India and killed seven. He also urged states to ensure that the directives are followed by people. The government has also ordered states to “strictly enforce lockdown” and asked for legal action against those who violated the restrictions.

“Many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously. Please save yourself, save your family, follow the directives seriously. I request the state governments to ensure that the rules and laws are followed,” the Prime Minister tweeted in Hindi.

Across India, 80 districts including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru are on complete lockdown, which means only essential services will be allowed. Railways, metros and inter-state buses have been stopped and public transport has been banned in Punjab, Rajasthan, Bengal and Haryana.

Mumbai has banned one or more persons from public places and even in private cars. Trucks carrying essential goods will be allowed, but this morning, there were complaints that tough checks at borders had slowed down supply.

The lockdown was announced on a day millions in the country stayed indoors on Sunday, heeding to PM Modi’s appeal for people to self-isolate for a day and follow what he called “Janata Curfew” to contain the spread of coronavirus or COVID-19.

Besides the lockdown, the centre has expanded testing to private laboratories and it will now include asymptomatic people who have had contact with confirmed cases.

Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, with a face mask sat on a dharna outside the Ramada hotel in Bengaluru early Wednesday morning after he was allegedly not allowed to meet the Congress MLAs inside the hotel.

In a video clip, it can be seen how the police are trying to remove him from the spot as he resists being evicted.

“I’m a Rajya Sabha candidate from Madhya Pradesh, voting is scheduled for March 26. My MLAs have been kept here, they want to speak to me, their phones have been snatched, police are not letting me speak to them saying there is a security threat to MLAs,” said Digvijaya Singh.

The Madhya Pradesh leader, who arrived early this morning in the city, said he has been receiving messages from the families of the lawmakers who have been held “captive” in Bengaluru.

“We were expecting them to come back, but when we saw they’re being held back, messages came from their families,” the leader added.

He also alleged that there is police presence in every hotel room and the lawmakers are being followed at all hours.

The 22 Congress lawmakers from Madhya Pradesh in Bengaluru appeared before the media on Tuesday and said they were with BJP leader Jyotiraditya Scindia and had not been held captive. The MLAs said they were open to the idea of returning to their home state immediately if provided Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) security.

The Congress government’s problems began last week after 22 MLAs resigned from the assembly in the wake of former senior party leader Jyotiraditya Scindia joining the BJP. The speaker later accepted the resignations of six members, bringing the strength of the House to 222, with the majority mark at 112.

“We can confirm that an employee from our Bengaluru office has been diagnosed with COVID-19” the company said in a statement. “They were in one of our Bangalore offices for a few hours before developing any symptoms,” Google added.

According to a report, the 26-year-old software engineer in Google, returned from Greece in the first week of March. The patient’s condition is stable now, the media bulletin said.

Google asked colleagues he came in touch with to quarantine themselves. “The employee has been on quarantine since then, and we have asked colleagues who were in close contact with the employee to quarantine themselves and monitor their health,” the tech giant said.

Google asked all the employees in that Bengaluru office to work from home today. In the wake coronavirus scare in the country, IT services companies Wipro and Tech Mahindra also adopted remote work models.
Earlier, two employees from Mindtree and Dell were tested positive for novel coronavirus. At present, Karnataka reported six confirmed cases of COVID-19 including its first death in the country.

“The 76-year-old man from Kalburgi who passed away was a suspected COVID-19 patient has been confirmed for COVID-19,” the Karnataka health department said in a statement.

As the number of coronavirus cases increases rapidly, Central and state government across the country scaled up measures to contain the spread. Delhi, Kerala and Haryana government declared coronavirus infection an epidemic. All the schools, colleges cinema halls were ordered shut until 31 March, chief minister Arvind Kejriwal said on Thursday. COVID-19 has so far affected more than 127,000 people worldwide.

More people have tested positive for coronavirus — eight in Kerala and three each in Karnataka and Maharashtra, state authorities said on Tuesday as the number of such cases went up to 62.

The health ministry said the total number of confirmed cases has risen to 62, adding the rest are being retested for confirmation.

In Karnataka, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said four persons have been confirmed for coronavirus, including three new cases. In Maharashtra’s Pune, three persons tested positive, a day after two cases were reported.

In the morning, 58 Indians were brought back home from coronavirus-hit Iran in a military transport aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF).

IAF spokesperson Group Captain Anupam Banerjee said the C-17 Globemaster aircraft evacuated 25 men, 31 women and two children. It also brought swab samples of 529 Indians to carry out laboratory tests and check whether they have coronavirus infection. Those who returned have been quarantined at a medical facility in Hindon.

Announcing the number of latest cases in Kerala after a special cabinet meeting held in Thiruvananthapuram to discuss the situation, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said at least 1,116 people are under observation — 149 in isolation wards of various hospitals and 967 under home quarantine.
The fresh cases are friends and relatives of an Italy-returned couple and their son who had on Saturday tested positive for the deadly virus along with two other kin staying with them at their home in Rane in Pathanamthitta district, said Health Minister KK Shailaja who was also present. She said the aged parents of the couple are among the six latest positive cases.

Late on Tuesday, Shailaja said two more confirmed cases were detected in Kerala with the parents of a three-year-old boy, who tested positive for COVID-19 in Kochi on Monday on the family’s return from Italy, being the latest patients.

In Kerala, schools and colleges and cinemas will remain closed in the state till March 31. Classes 1 to 7 of all schools — state, CBSE and ICSE boards — will remain shut and examinations which have begun for them will be put on hold. Examinations for class 10, class 12 and vocational higher secondary will, however, continue. Final examinations of class 8 and 9 also will proceed as usual.

Temple and church festivals, which witnesses mass gatherings should be avoided, but rituals can be held in a low key manner, Vijayan said.

As the hill temple Lord Ayyappa at Sabarimala will reopen on March 13, monthly pujas can be held, but at this juncture devotee should avoid darshan, he said.

In Jaipur, the combination of lopinavir and ritonavir, both second-line HIV drugs, was administered to an elderly Italian couple undergoing treatment for Covid-19 at the SMS Hospital. The Drug Controller General of India approved the “restricted use” of these medications for treating those affected by the novel coronavirus after the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) sought their emergency approval.

SMS Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr DS Meena said the Italian man and his wife had developed severe respiratory problems following which a decision was taken to put them on the combination. Officials said consent of the patients was taken before the drugs were administered.

This is the sixth new positive case in the state.

Meanwhile, a factory worker who came in contact with the coronavirus positive businessman from Agra, has also tested positive. The new patient was admitted to Agra district hospital while three suspected patients from Aligarh and four from Siddhartha Nagar have been quarantined.
