Home Minister Amit Shah said on Tuesday that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee would pay a heavy price for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the people of the state would make her a political refugee.

“Mamata will pay dearly for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act. People will make her political refugee in the state,” Shah said. He was addressing virtual rally for Bangal election .

Shah added that the CAA was an important step to put a stop to appeasement politics. “People of Bengal should know this. It was a step to end the wrongs done for decades to refugees.”

Shah said he remembers how Mamata was furious when the CAA was implemented and had opposed the decision in the Parliament and on the streets.

“I have never seen such an angry person before. Mamata ji don’t you think people from the Matua and Namashudra community should get citizenship? If yes, then why you are so angry?” Shah asked.

Mounting an attack over the issue of trains for migrant workers, the home minister said: “Bengal has asked for the fewest trains, only 236 trains which have transported three lakh migrants. You (Mamata Banerjee) have called Shramik Special trains Corona Express. That will pave the way for your exit.”

Shah added that Banerjee was stalling Ayushman Bharat and other central schemes because she is wary of Narendra Modi’s increasing popularity in the state.

“I ask her why is she not allowing health benefits to reach the people of Bengal? There is a limit to such politics which comes at the cost of well being of people. All state leaders, including Kejriwal, have accepted the scheme, but Mamta has not,” Shah said.

“I assure people of Bengal that we will implement the scheme after we win the state elections,” the home minister said.

He remarked that he still remembers how opposition parties and leaders, including Rahul Gandhi criticised the Jan Dhan bank accounts. “It is through these accounts that 51 crore people have received direct financial benefits in the time of coronavirus pandemic,” Shah added.

Asking people of Bengal how political violence could become “the state’s identity”, he said that the chief minister should stop “resorting to violence.”

“Can Mamata stop change by resorting to violence? You try to stop us by stopping us on roads and refusing helicopters. Now we are addressing Bengal’s people through the virtual mode, how will you stop us?” Shah asked.

Accusing the state government of being “steeped in corruption”, Shah said that he has lost count of the number of corrupt activities the TMC government has been accused of.

Shah said that the BJP would realize Bengal’s dream of transforming into ‘Sonar Bangla’ (Golden Bengal). “BJP deserves one chance in Bengal. We will put an end to political violence, corruption, appeasement politics, unemployment and dynastic rule.”

Earlier, the BJP’s state unit had prepared a ‘nine-point agenda’ highlighting the nine major failures of the Mamata Banerjee government in the state which has been in power for nine years.

The BJP has launched a mega drive of virtual rallies from various parts of the country. Top Union Ministers will reach out to people through social media and digital platforms to highlight the achievements of the Narendra Modi government that completed its first year of second term on May 30.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention on the alleged “whimsical” functioning of the railways in sending Shramik Special trains to West Bengal and urged the BJP-led Centre not to pursue politics when the state is battling a dual crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic and trail of destruction left behind by Cyclone Amphan.

The state’s infrastructure is “stretched to its limit” after the May 20 cyclone and it can receive very few trains carrying migrant workers back on a daily basis as of now, she said.

The state considers the ferrying of a large number of migrant workers by the railways as a big problem for public health. The pressure should be “optimal and well managed”, Banerjee said.

“The state government is facing a dual crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and the devastation caused by Cyclone Amphan. Our infrastructure is completely stretched. The railways is sending Shramik Special trains to the state every day according to its whims and fancies, without even bothering to inform us,” she said.
“Where will we keep these migrant labourers for institutional quarantine? This is not the time for politics. We are facing a very tough situation and we need time and space to tackle it,” the chief minister said, ahead of the slated arrival of 11 Shramik Special trains in the state in the evening.

Banerjee, one of the most vocal critics of the BJP, hit out at the saffron party, saying, “They can disturb me politically, but why are they causing harm to the state? West Bengal is facing such a major disaster. It will lead to a spike in COVID-19 cases. Who will take the responsibility then?” “I request the prime minister and Union home minister to look into the matter so that there is no spike in COVID-19 cases in the state. The prime minister should intervene,” the feisty Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo said.

The TMC government had asked the railway ministry not to send Shramik Special trains to the state till May 26 in view of the devastation caused by Cyclone Amphan. However, a total of 41 such trains are scheduled to arrive in the city this week.

The railways, however, said no trains were being “planned” by the national transporter and it was only operationalising the trains that have been asked for by the states.

“The railways was given a demand with details such as the number of passengers, originating and destination points. All the related coordination is being done by the state governments. The railways is a medium providing service by arranging rakes based on the request from these states,” it said.

Around 41 trains were to leave for West Bengal on May 26, but by midnight, only 10 had departed, the railways said.

So far, 35 trains have terminated in Bengal, 22 are in transit and three more are in the pipeline, according to data provided by the national transporter.

“It is because of the sudden announcement of the lockdown that we are facing this migrant labourer crisis. I had earlier told Union Home Minister Amit Shah that if his government feels that we cannot handle the COVID-19 crisis, why don’t they (Centre) handle it on its own?” Banerjee said.

Asserting that the coronavirus cases were brought under control in the state, the chief minister said there was a recent spike after 25 per cent of the migrant labourers, who returned from other states, tested positive for the disease.

Most of these cases were returnees from the hotspot areas in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, she said.

“We had come up with a plan, according to which everyone would have come back in a few days in a phased manner. But we got to know only on Tuesday that many trains are coming from Maharashtra. I myself spoke to the Maharashtra government and they said they were informed of it at 2’o clock the night before. Had the Centre drawn up a plan with us, the railway ministry consulted us, it would have been better,” Banerjee said.

Many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said this morning a day after the government imposed severe restrictions across the country amid to prevent further spread of coronavirus that has infected over 400 people in India and killed seven. He also urged states to ensure that the directives are followed by people. The government has also ordered states to “strictly enforce lockdown” and asked for legal action against those who violated the restrictions.

“Many people are still not taking the lockdown seriously. Please save yourself, save your family, follow the directives seriously. I request the state governments to ensure that the rules and laws are followed,” the Prime Minister tweeted in Hindi.

Across India, 80 districts including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru are on complete lockdown, which means only essential services will be allowed. Railways, metros and inter-state buses have been stopped and public transport has been banned in Punjab, Rajasthan, Bengal and Haryana.

Mumbai has banned one or more persons from public places and even in private cars. Trucks carrying essential goods will be allowed, but this morning, there were complaints that tough checks at borders had slowed down supply.

The lockdown was announced on a day millions in the country stayed indoors on Sunday, heeding to PM Modi’s appeal for people to self-isolate for a day and follow what he called “Janata Curfew” to contain the spread of coronavirus or COVID-19.

Besides the lockdown, the centre has expanded testing to private laboratories and it will now include asymptomatic people who have had contact with confirmed cases.

One person was killed in Lucknow and two in Mangaluru as protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent in some parts of the country on Thursday, forcing administration to impose curfew and curtail internet services.

However, in the national and financial capitals of India, “no untoward incidents was reported”. Delhi Police PRO Mandeep Singh Randhawa said the force is closely monitoring social media and WhatsApp groups to check rumour mongering. At the August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai, there were peaceful protests during the three hours of agitation.

Over 2,000 police personnel at the venue did not come in the way of protesters, which earned the Mumbai Police plaudits on social media. Many protesters, before leaving, made it a point to shake hands with the policemen. Groups of youngsters were also seen singing while walking to the nearby Grant Road Railway station.

Amid protests against the amended Citizenship Act, BJP working president J P Nadda asserted that the law will be implemented and the National Register of Citizens will also be brought in. “Those who are opposing the citizenship law should meet them. These people have been living in India for 28-30 years but can’t admit their children in schools or buy a house as they do not have citizenship. Our rivals cannot see anything beyond their vote bank politics,” Nadda said.

Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa also tried to allay fears among the Muslim community, saying that it was his government’s responsibility to protect their interest. Calling for peace, amid protests against the CAA in various parts of the state defying prohibitory orders, he accused the Congress party of being behind it and warned them of consequences.

West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh slammed CM Mamata Banerjee, who is also the Trinamool Congress supremo, for allegedly instigating people against the central government, the BJP leader said she is frustrated as her dream of becoming the prime minister did not see the light of the day.

“No Indian has the urge to destroy national properties. Those who have ravaged public properties and wreaked havoc in West Bengal for last few days in support of the chief minister of the state are the enemies of the country. These lungi clad infiltrators can be only identified through the NRC,” Ghosh asserted.

In Uttar Pradesh

A Lucknow man was killed as violence erupted in the state capital and some other parts of Uttar Pradesh with protesters, angry over the new citizenship law, pelting stones at police and torching vehicles.

Mohammad Wakeel (25) suffered a firearm injury when he was passing through an old city area where the clashes took place, his family said. But police denied that this had anything to do with the protests or the police action. The scattered incidents of violence were reported from Lucknow’s old city and parts of Sambhal and Mau districts.

Two buses were torched, one in Lucknow and the other in Sambhal. Mobs also targeted two police posts in the state capital, setting one of them ablaze. Police resorted to lathi-charge and used tear-gas shells at several places.

In Mau, protesters hurled stones, triggering a large deployment of UP’s Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC). Several Aligarh Muslim University teachers held a silent march, days after the institute witnessed violence when students protested against the new legislation that they say discriminates against Muslim. The protesters, including several women teachers, marched from the AMU Teachers’ Club to the Purani Chungi Crossing.

In Karnataka

Two persons were killed in police firing at Mangaluru in BJP-ruled Karnataka as protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act turned violent, even as street demonstrations surged in southern cities. Police have clamped curfew in parts of Mangaluru until Friday night.

Police sources said protesters defying prohibitory orders attempted to lay siege to the Mangalore North police station and tried to attack police personnel, following which force was used to disperse them.

Two persons received bullet injuries in police firing and they later succumbed at a hospital, police confirmed. The deceased were identified as Jaleel Kudroli (49) and Nausheen (23).

In Assam, Bengal & Bihar

Protests against contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act continued unabated across Assam on Thursday but there was no report of any violence during the stir which was also the case in West Bengal and Meghalaya.

But, Bihar witnessed vandalism and arsons during the day on account of a state-wide shutdown called by Left parties to protest against new citizenship law and proposed NRC across the nation.

All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) strongly criticising the Vice Chancellors’ appeal to students not to join the stir. VCs of about 20 government and private universities in Assam, which experienced mass protests against the amended Citizenship Act and mayhem, had earlier made an appeal to students not to endanger their future but help in maintaining peace and harmony in the state.

Delhi

Thousands of students, activists and opposition leaders hit the streets in the national capital on Thursday defying heavy security clampdown and prohibitory orders even as authorities suspended mobile internet services and restricted traffic movement to quell the swirling agitation.

Opposition leaders D Raja, Sitaram Yechury, Nilotpal Basu, Brinda Karat, Ajay Maken, Sandeep Dikshit and activists Yogendra Yadav, Umar Khalid were among over 1,200 people detained from areas around Red Fort and Mandi House — the sites of the two planned demonstrations.

Notwithstanding the restrictions, hundreds of flag-waving students and activists converged near the historic Jantar Mantar in the afternoon to voice their anger against the contentious law after police forcefully evicted protesters from areas around Red Fort and Mandi House. Permission for holding any demonstration in the two sites was not granted.

Maharashtra

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of the financial capital against the Citizenship Act on Thursday, converging at the August Kranti Maidan, where Mahatma Gandhi in 1942 told the British to quit India.

The gathering included workers of political parties, students and a smattering of Bollywood personalities, who made out a strong case against the Act and the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The protest in Mumbai was called by a slew of opposition parties like the CPI and civil society groups, but the gathering seemed to transcend all identities. Students from Assam, a few Mumbaikars hailing from Mizoram and others joined the locals in the protests that began at 4 pm and dwarfed a pro-CAA gathering organised outside the Churchgate railway station not far away. Bollywood personalities including actors Farhan Akhtar, Sushant Singh, Swara Bhaskar and film makers Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Saeed Mirza were also present at the Maidan.
