In 2024, Gurugram alone has reported over 25,000 cybercrime cases

Gurugram, November 18th, 2025: The threat of cyber fraud is steadily increasing in the state of Haryana. The state has lost ₹850 crore to digital frauds in 2024, with Gurugram alone accounting for one-fifth of the total cases during this period, said Mr. Vikas Beniwal, Sub-Inspector, PS Cyber Manesar. He was speaking at the nationwide fraud awareness programme “Knock Out Digital Fraud” jointly organized by Haryana Police and Bajaj Finance Ltd (BFL) at Government College, Sidhrawali. Around 250 students and faculty members of the college attended the awareness programme.

Elaborating further on various kinds of frauds, Mr. Beniwal said,“The biggest reasons people fall victim are ignorance, greed and apprehension. Fraudsters use tactics like digital arrest, investment scams and task-based fraud to isolate victims, exploit psychology and drain their life savings. Whenever someone calls asking for money or account details, there should be no second thought—they are a fraudster. Awareness is the only real defence.”

“Cybercrime is rising at an alarming pace. In Gurugram alone, more than 25,000 cybercrime cases have been reported in 2024. In the event of cyber fraud, the victim should promptly file a complaint with the cyber police, as it significantly increases the chances of recovering the lost amount. The first three hours are considered the golden period for reporting such incidents,” he further said adding that total of 5000 arrests have been done so far in reported cases.

In 2024-25, the Haryana Police recovered ₹100 crore from cyber fraud cases. Across India, losses have crossed ₹22,800 crore in the same period—an increase of nearly 40% from last year.

Addressing the awareness campaign, Mr. Rajeshpal, Assistant Sub-Inspector, PS Cyber Manesar, Haryana said, “Our country is progressing, and as we grow stronger, cyber fraud has become a form of economic war against us. This is why nationwide fraud awareness is essential. You must stay alert and protect yourselves from tempting offers, suspicious links, and social media tricks. Fraudsters operate from abroad and use our own carelessness against us.”

“By not sharing your bank details, always verifying before you act, and staying alert, one can easily protect themselves from cyber fraud,” he added.

Mr. Satyender Kumar, Assistant Sub-Inspector, PS Cyber Manesar, Haryana said, “Cyber fraud has now become a business, operating through clusters across the country. As communication and digital connectivity have increased, our vulnerabilities have also grown. he most important thing is awareness. If you ever suspect cyber fraud, call 1930 immediately because early action greatly improves the chances of stopping the transaction. Avoid sharing access, avoid suspicious APK files, and do not link the same number to every platform”.

Speaking at the occasion, Professor P.K. Malik, Government College Sidhrawali, said, ‘India’s youth can play an important role in spreading awareness against different forms of cybercrime and protecting their families and communities by staying alert and informed.’”

Bajaj Finance Ltd (BFL), India’s largest non-banking financial company in the private sector, and a part of Bajaj Finserv is organising a nationwide financial literacy and cyber fraud awareness programme which aims to inform digital users about different types of threats, and best practices to safeguard finances.

The nationwide campaign is aligned with the Reserve Bank of India’s 2024 guidelines on Fraud Risk management for NBFCs, which emphasizes early detection, staff accountability, and public engagement to make the digital ecosystem safer for everyone.

The nationwide awareness programme offers the cyber community valuable safety tips on safeguarding personal and sensitive information. This includes refraining from sharing OTPs, PINs, clicking on suspicious emails, SMSs, links, QR codes and downloading applications from unknown sources. It includes a series of interactive workshops, digital awareness drives, and community outreach programs across major cities and towns.

The programme is focused on drawing citizens’ attention to common financial frauds committed by scammers including fake social media accounts, WhatsApp groups and websites that mimic financial companies, falsely claiming affiliation and impersonating their employees.

· Bajaj Finance Ltd’s financial literacy initiative, ‘Arthsutra Samvad’, has reached the heartland of Haryana as part of its Pan-India programme aimed at promoting financial inclusion across villages and underbanked regions in India’s hinterland

· The programme in Haryana will highlight the importance of financial discipline, create awareness about financial fraud and inform citizens about good practices in money management

Sonipat, Haryana, August 28, 2025: Bajaj Finance Ltd., India’s largest Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) in the private sector, and part of Bajaj Finserv, today organized its Financial Literacy programme, titled ‘Arthsutra Samvad’ in Hindu College of Engineering at Sonipat, Haryana. The pan-India programme aims to further financial inclusion across villages and underbanked locations in India’s hinterland.

‘Arthsutra Samvad’, is being implemented under RBI’s initiative for augmenting financial literacy and awareness. It aims to create awareness about financial discipline, online frauds and good practices in money management.

Dignitaries including Shri Naveen Gulia, District Education Officer, Sonipat, Haryana, Police official Shri Sukhbir Singh, Cyber Crime and professor Dr DP Singh, Director, Hindu Group of Institutions graced the event. Around 200 students also attended the awareness programme.

Bajaj Finance’s ‘Arthsutra Samvad’ is a comprehensive programme to foster financial awareness and empowerment at the grassroots level across India’s hinterlands. At its core, the initiative aims to simplify personal finance for individuals, helping them make informed choices with confidence and clarity.

Addressing the students in the audience, Shri Naveen Gulia, District Education Officer of Sonipat, Haryana, emphasized that everyone should have basic knowledge of banking. He noted that today’s young generation is intelligent and well aware of new technologies, actively using high-tech apps. However, it is equally important for them to be financially literate. They must understand the entire banking process—from opening and managing a bank account to maintaining a good CIBIL score. He urged the youth to open their own accounts and manage them independently, without blindly trusting others. Financial awareness, he stressed, is essential.

As part of the campaign’s multi-faceted approach, Arthsutra Samvad also places a strong emphasis on financial fraud awareness. Speaking on this, police officer Shri Sukhbir Singh from the Cyber Crime Police Station stated that everyone should remember the helpline number 1930, and in case of any cyber fraud, they should immediately report it. If the complaint is made within one hour, the accused’s accounts can be promptly blocked, significantly increasing the chances of recovering the lost money. He referred to this critical window as the “golden hour” in cyber fraud cases, emphasizing the importance of swift reporting. He also stressed the need for careful and responsible use of mobile phones. Additionally, he advised students to protect themselves from cyber threats such as digital arrest scams, fraudulent investment groups on WhatsApp, installing suspicious APK files, or clicking on unidentified links received on their devices.

Professor Dr. D.P. Singh, Director, Hindu Group of Institutes on this occasion said, “Financial literacy is not just about understanding money—it’s about building trust in your financial future. Whether it’s a small loan or a major business investment, timely repayment shapes your credit history and opens doors to greater opportunities in life.”

Through workshops, interactive sessions, and community dialogues, the Arthsutra program covers essential topics such as the importance of savings and how to build financial buffers for emergencies, understanding the nuances of responsible borrowing to avoid debt traps, and recognizing and avoiding common scams—including those that occur online or in person.

In addition, participants will be guided on cultivating financial discipline, and developing the resilience needed to navigate life’s monetary ups and downs. By merging practical knowledge with real-life scenarios, Arthsutra Samvad hopes to spark a long-term shift toward financially conscious behavior and a future-ready citizenry.

Following the event in Sonipat, on-ground awareness sessions will be carried out across villages in Haryana.

The programme will be further amplified through cultural events in Haryana and will include interactive workshops, expert talks, and community engagement activities, designed to simplify finance and encourage lifelong financial learning.

As part of the 100-year-old Bajaj Group, Bajaj Finance is committed to serving society. A Bajaj Finance spokesperson said, “We believe the business of financial services has a larger purpose – that of inclusion of the underserved and unbanked population into the nation’s financial mainstream. As part of our efforts to further financial inclusion, we are now launching a pan-India financial inclusion programme, aimed at bringing as many people as possible into India’s formal financial stream.”
