Sharing the vision for the Ranchi campus, Zulfiquar Haider, Vice Chancellor Designate – Azim Premji University, Ranchi campus, said, “We want the Ranchi campus to be closely connected to the Social and Developmental needs of this region and contribute to building knowledge and human resources’. The University will offer a range of programs and courses that will suit the needs of diverse students and learners, including working professionals. The university aims to meaningfully engage with the rich traditions, histories, knowledge systems and worldviews of the diverse Adivasi and other communities of Jharkhand.”

Located in Itki, the 150-acre campus is being developed as a fully residential facility, equipped with state-of-the art classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities and residences for both students and faculty.  A teaching hospital and medical college are also planned. The campus is designed to be sustainable with energy-efficient systems and facilities for rainwater harvesting and water treatment.

The Ranchi campus will offer undergraduate, postgraduate, diploma, certificate, and continuing education programmes across disciplines such as Development, Education, Economics, Public Health, Climate Change and Sustainability. These programmes are designed to reflect the development context of Jharkhand and eastern India and will be supported by faculty with strong academic and field experience.

In the current academic year, the campus will begin by offering two Master’s programmes- MA in Applied Economics and MA in Development. It will also offer Post Graduate Diplomas in Local Development, Early Childhood Education, and Educational Assessment, along with multiple short Certificate programmes in Public Health, Education and Development.

Speaking about the University’s broader purpose, Zulfiquar added, “Azim Premji University was established with a clear public purpose, guided by the values of the Azim Premji Foundation. Through teaching, research, and practice, we seek to contribute to a more just, equitable, humane, and sustainable society. The Ranchi campus extends this mission with a focus on knowledge creation, capacity building, and public discourse in Jharkhand and the wider eastern India region”.

About the Lecture

This lecture explores how to bridge the gap between capacity and opportunity, drawing on over a decade of global research. Professor Krishna discusses how countries have successfully built strong ladders of opportunity while achieving excellence, offering insights into how development can expand real possibilities for all.

About the Speaker

Anirudh Krishna is an internationally renowned scholar on poverty, inequality, and social mobility, and their impact on communities worldwide. He is the Edgar T. Thompson Professor of Public Policy and Political Science at Duke University, where he has taught for 25 years. He earned his Ph.D. in Government from Cornell University (2000) and a master’s in economics from Delhi University (1980) and previously served 14 years in the Indian Administrative Service, leading rural and urban development programmes.

He has received several global honours, including an Honorary Doctorate from Uppsala University (2011), the Olaf Palme Visiting Professorship (2007), and the Dudley Seers Memorial Prize (2005, 2013). He has advised the World Bank, the United Nations, and multiple governments and NGOs.

His recent work on ladders of opportunity and social mobility, featured in his TED Talk, builds on three decades of research across Asia, Africa, and the US. Krishna has authored nine books and nearly 90 publications, including One Illness Away and The Broken Ladder, which won the A.K. Coomaraswamy Award.

While the health status of tribal populations has improved over the past few decades, there remains a significant gap between health indicators among tribal and many other social groups. National Family Health Survey‑5 data shows that tribal communities bear a disproportionate burden of health conditions, healthcare access and outcomes including immunisation coverage, institutional delivery, anaemia, child malnutrition along with an emerging burden of non-communicable diseases.

The event seeks to bring together experiences and learnings from the ground and discuss the health concerns of these communities, emerging challenges, and pathways for improvement.

Over 250 delegates from across the country, including representatives from civil society organisations working on the health of tribal communities, doctors working in hospitals that serve these communities and members of the public health system, among others are participating in the event.

Panel discussions cover a wide range of topics related to the health of tribal communities, including the current context and future directions, perspectives of community health workers and frontline staff of the public health system, building a culturally sensitive health workforce, addressing neglected and enduring health concerns and experiences of running good hospitals.

Over 25 organizations working on the health of tribal communities are holding a poster exhibition on their experiences, innovative practices to address health concerns and efforts to galvanise community engagement.

This event is the first in a series of ‘Dialogues in Public Health’ hosted by Azim Premji University to create a forum for exchanging knowledge embedded in the real world of practice.

Through a comprehensive and collaborative approach, the Azim Premji Foundation is focused on improving community health practices and access to quality healthcare for vulnerable households. Its core work is to support the public system at all levels – community health, primary healthcare, and secondary hospitals – by improving their capacity and functioning. Apart from its work on-the-ground, the Foundation also supports building an informed, skilled and dedicated health sector workforce through education. The upcoming Azim Premji University at Ranchi will include a Medical College and Hospital and offer courses in medicine, nursing and allied health.

The Wipro earthian program is one of India’s largest sustainability education programs for schools and colleges. The 2024 edition of this program received over 1,500 project submissions, of which 23 winning and 43 shortlisted entries were selected by an independent jury. The teams from the winning schools demonstrated a deep understanding of biodiversity, waste and water, through a combination of activity-based learning programs and written essays.

Over 100 schools were recognized for their exceptional effort by Wipro earthian’s regional non-governmental organization (NGO) partners. This year, the Wipro Sustainability Educators Network (SEN) and 22 sustainability educators from Wipro’s NGO partners engaged with local communities and students in activities such as winter & summer schools, nature camps, library sessions, and the Goa Bird Atlas. The SEN facilitates grassroots-level engagement with student communities, fostering local and contextual learning and insights on sustainability-related issues.

Anurag Behar, Chief Executive Officer, Azim Premji Foundation, and Narayan P.S., Global Head of Sustainability and Social Initiatives, Wipro Limited, and Managing Trustee, Wipro Foundation, felicitated the winning teams with certificates and cash prizes. The teams also engaged with Wipro’s sustainability partners through collaborative programs that provided insights into sustainability issues.

Bringing students and teachers together from schools spread across the country, the Wipro earthian program is designed to generate action-based learning that celebrates the underlying connectedness of the individual with the larger fabric of community and nature. We continue to be inspired by the spirit of resilience and optimism we see in our young citizens as they get ready to face the multiple challenges of sustainable development the world faces.”

Wipro earthian extensively supported colleges through the ‘ideas to Impact’ (i2I) challenge, in collaboration with IIT Madras. In August 2024, five college teams were recognized for their innovative projects in the themes of Energy, Building Material, and Water. i2I received participation from schools and colleges spread across 27 states with more than 2,000 registrations. The challenge aimed to validate eco-innovative ideas and support their transformation into viable prototypes that contribute to a carbon-neutral future.

Since 2011, Wipro earthian has engaged with over 50,000 schools, 4,000 colleges, 2,00,000 students, and 40,000 teachers. This year, participation remained high with more than 1,500 submissions from schools and over 700 from colleges. Support from Wipro’s education partners, including CEE, CPREEC, Wild Ecologues, IIT Madras, IIM Bangalore, state governments, and educators in the SEN, has expanded the program’s reach.
