The two principal characters of the delightfully askew Gulabo Sitabo are always at loggerheads, but the trait that they share – a selfish love for the crumbling Fatima Mahal, a mansion going to seed rather rapidly – constitutes the spine of the story.

The spare, unshowy treatment of the central conflict, which, as the film progresses, creates room for two other key players with their won sets of vested interests, might appear to be at variance with the comedic spirit of the plot.

With the actors giving the film their all – Amitabh Bachchan’s wizened, hunchbacked, curmudgeonly act is the main propellant – Gulabo Sitabo works even when not much seems to be happening on the screen or the characters are beating about the bush.

The best thing about Gulabo Sitabo, scripted by Juhi Chaturvedi, is that it isn’t trying to be a scream. The humour springs from the language and the manner of its delivery. It won’t have you rolling on the floor. But it will elicit mild chuckles every time Mirza (Bachchan) and Baankey Rastogi (Ayushmann Khurrana) have a go at each other over petty matters that slowly snowball out of control.

Mirza and Baankey won’t cede an inch to each other, but fate has a way of asserting itself. In Mirza’s case, it is represented by his Begum (Farrukh Jafar), who is a decade-and-a-half older than him but is no pushover. For Baankey, who owns an atta chakki in town, destiny takes the form of a few bricks in a wall that give way when he directs a kick at it in the exasperation triggered by a fellow tenant who takes longer than usual in the toilet.

The daily quoted Bhumi as saying, “Badhaai Ho is one of my favourite films in recent times, and it is really exciting to take this franchise forward. For me, the script is one of the best that I have ever come across, and I immediately wanted to do this film. My character again is strong, independent and author-backed, and it gives me a lot of scope to bring a very different and cool character to life. This time, too, the film will say something extremely relevant and relatable, but in a hilarious manner. I’m also excited to share screen space with Raj for the first time.” The film will go on floors by June and is likely to release next year.

Rajkummar also told the daily, “I have played a cop before, but never with this perspective. I look for layered characters and this is a perfect match. My character is surrounded by strong women at home and work, and that adds immense depth to his personality. Junglee Pictures’ Bareilly Ki Barfi was a fabulous experience for me. Badhaai Do is a reunion in many ways.”

This will be the first time Bhumi and Rajkummar will feature together in a film. Badhaai Ho enjoyed both commercial and critical success. Directed by Amit Sharma, Badhaai Ho also featured Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao and Surekha Sikri. It traces the story of a middle-aged couple who get pregnant, much to the shock and disappointment of their son.

The film should now remain steady today to aim for a respectable first week total.

The 4 day business of the film is in 36.26-36.76 crores range and if the film can have a first week above 45 crores mark it will be a decent result. Also, this will mean the film will cross the lifetime business of prequel before the end of the week. Earlier, trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted figures for opening weekend.

Bollywood’s Mr Disruptor is at it again, rewriting the rules of what the Hindi mainstream hero can dare to do on screen.

Only a couple of months ago, Ayushmann Khurrana was “Dream Girl”, the phone ‘sexpert’ who aces in impersonating a woman’s voice, and makes a living fulfilling fantasies of lonely men. This week, he returns as “Bala”, a 25-year old whose rapidly receding hairline sets off confident issues, because he is constantly fending against rejection in a world that openly discriminates against physical flaws.

Bala” has the Ayushmann advantage, evidently the best thing a filmmaker can hope to work with – creatively as well as commercially – right now in Bollywood.

Watching Ayushmann go as protagonist Bal Mukund Shukla – Bala to friends and family – you understand why casting the actor has been an advantage lately. He has managed to elevate his brand value to that of a star, because the audience flocks to see him. Yet, his characters are rooted in reality, letting writers and directors capitalise on his slant at experimentation.

Niren Bhatt’s script, however, is not solely about Ayushmann or Bala. There is a fascinating tri-faceted reflection of the human perception about looking good. If, on the one hand, Bala is tormented because he is losing out in personal and professional life owing to loss of hair, his neighbour — the darkskinned Latika (Bhumi Pednekar) — is used to another pertinent aspect of bodyshaming since childhood. She is the darkskinned girl in smalltown Kanpur, who is bright enough to carve her professional space as a lawyer, but not bright enough in complexion to interest the neighbourhood cool dude Bala through their growing-up years.

The film collected Rs 7.43 crore on Monday taking its total to Rs 52 crore. It was Ayushmann’s highest weekend grosser with collections of Rs 44.57 crore.

Sharing the box office figures of the film, film trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “Dream Girl consolidates and cements its status… Is a bonafide success, with Day 4 [working day] showing negligible decline [despite lower ticket rates on weekdays]… Fri 10.05 cr, Sat 16.42 cr, Sun 18.10 cr, Mon 7.43 cr. Total: Rs 52 cr. India biz.”The film is Ayushmann’s second hit of the year after his last release, Anubhav Sinha’s Article 15. He had played a no-nonsense cop in the film which collected Rs 65.45 crore at the domestic box office.

Taran had compared the first weekend collections of the film with Ayushmann’s earlier grossers on Monday. Blessed with the gift of gab and a melodious voice, Karamvir aka Pooja soon finds a queue of men vying for his attention and love. From a poetry-obsessed police officer Rajpal (Vijay Raaz) to a lovelorn and brahmachari Mahinder (Abhishek Banerjee), his clients are besotted by the charm of Pooja and her voice. But the situation gets tricky when all his clients fall head over heels in love with Pooja.

Raaj Shaandilyaa’s Dream Girl is an out-and-out comedy with huge dollops of witty one-liners and jokes. But it is this very humour that plays the biggest hindrance in the development of the story. Despite an interesting premise, Dream Girl fails to go beyond the basic idea. The 137-minute film seems like a long comic skit sans a storyline.
