MUMBAI. N Chandrasekaran has stepped up oversight at Air India with weekly reviews and direct monitoring of key departments as CEO Campbell Wilson prepares to exit. The move comes as the airline faces rising costs from the West Asia conflict, delayed aircraft refurbishment programmes and leadership uncertainty. Former civil aviation secretary Pradeep Singh Kharola has been appointed executive advisor to support the transition. Air India is also reviewing its fleet plans after reporting losses of around Rs.27,000 crore in FY26. While the airline will continue aircraft inductions, it plans faster retirement of older fuel-intensive planes and further capacity rationalisation to improve efficiency.

NEW DELHI — In a milestone that highlights India’s expanding footprint in global aviation, Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport has climbed four places to claim the 28th spot in the prestigious 2026 Skytrax World Airport Rankings. Handling nearly 79 million passengers annually, Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL) secured its position as the only Indian hub in the global top 30, while retaining its crown as the “Best Airport in India & South Asia.”

The achievement marks a broader philosophical shift in global travel: airports are no longer viewed simply as transit networks with gates, but as a traveler’s first intimate experience with a nation’s brand.

Delhi IGI: Competing at Global ScaleAs global airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Singapore Airlines, and Emirates funnel millions of international business leaders, diplomats, and tourists through the capital, Delhi Airport has balanced staggering traffic loads with an increasingly polished passenger experience. The Scale: Serving nearly 79 million passengers annually, placing it alongside some of the absolute busiest transit vectors on earth.

The Focus: Moving beyond infrastructure to emphasize transit comfort, cultural showcases (such as the terminal’s iconic Mudra hand gestures), and streamlined border handling.

The Strategic Takeaway

For India’s booming economy, Delhi Airport’s upward trajectory is a strong signal. As international travel accelerates, global airports are actively competing for a larger share of tourism revenue, high-value airline partnerships, and international transit spending.

By prioritizing passenger sentiment over just expanding terminal footprints, Delhi’s steady climb indicates that Indian aviation is evolving to treat infrastructure as the baseline, and the passenger experience as the true differentiator.
