NAGPUR. The Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in Nagpur has been officially handed over to the GMR Group under a Public-Private Partnership model during a high-profile event attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Speaking at the event, Civil Aviation Minister Naidu stated that with advanced Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul facilities alongside an expansive cargo hub, the airport will unlock its full economic potential and transform Nagpur into an airport-centric metropolis, or Aerotropolis. Highlighting the rapid expansion of India’s aviation sector, Naidu noted that the number of airports in the country has grown from 74 in 2014 to 165 today, emphasizing that Nagpur’s new cargo hub will seamlessly connect the region’s famous oranges, local handlooms, and electronics to global markets. To mark the transition, the Civil Aviation Minister also launched the airport’s official website, while Union Minister Nitin Gadkari unveiled the new logo for the international airport.

During the ceremony, Union Minister Gadkari highlighted that the upgraded international airport would act as a massive catalyst for the tourism and mining sectors across the Vidarbha region, while actively urging the Civil Aviation Ministry to establish direct international flights from Nagpur to global hubs like Singapore and Dubai. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis echoed this optimistic vision, pointing out that significant investments are already flowing into the local aviation sector through the Indian Air Force’s Maintenance Command and various defense establishments. Fadnavis explained that the addition of a second runway will eventually transform Nagpur into a major Defense Aviation Manufacturing Hub, drawing further heavy industrial investments. Ultimately, the leadership expressed complete confidence that the newly managed airport will serve as a powerful economic growth engine not just for Nagpur, but for the entire Vidarbha region and Central India.

NEW DELHI. The Airports Authority of India has signed strategic Memorandums of Understanding with cab aggregators Novo Cabs and WTI Cabs to strengthen last-mile connectivity and improve the overall travel experience for air passengers across the country. The official agreement exchange took place in the presence of Ms Nivedita Dubey, Member of Human Resources at AAI, alongside senior representatives from the participating organizations. This initiative is designed to address critical transit challenges by providing travelers with well-organized, reliable, and affordable transportation options directly to and from airport terminals.

As part of the regional rollout, Novo Cabs will focus its operations on passengers using the Jammu and Srinagar airports, significantly improving localized accessibility and ensuring smoother onward journeys in that region. Concurrently, WTI Cabs will deploy its transportation services across major airports nationwide, expanding transit choices for both domestic and international travelers. This collaborative effort aligns with AAI’s broader vision of fostering a world-class, passenger-centric aviation network that prioritizes convenience and seamless integration between air and ground travel.

NEW DELHI. The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has officially approved a major plan to modernize Nagpur’s Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport. Through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP), the airport will now be managed and upgraded by GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL) for the next 30 years. This landmark decision clears away years of legal and administrative delays, ensuring the project has the long-term stability needed to attract massive investment. As a key part of the MIHAN project, this redevelopment aims to turn Nagpur into the leading aviation hub for Central India.

Under this new plan, the airport is expected to eventually handle up to 30 million passengers every year, featuring state-of-the-art facilities and much better connectivity for the Vidarbha region. Beyond just travel, the upgrade will focus on making Nagpur a major center for cargo and logistics, taking advantage of its central location in India. This transformation is set to jumpstart the local economy, create thousands of new jobs across Maharashtra, and bring world-class efficiency to both passenger and industrial services.

NEW DELHI. The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has cleared a landmark proposal to modernize and upgrade Nagpur’s Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). This decision facilitates a 30-year concession to GMR Nagpur International Airport Limited (GNIAL) and extends the lease of Airports Authority of India (AAI) land beyond 2039. The move resolves long-standing administrative and legal hurdles, aligning the land lease with the operational timelines required for large-scale private investment.

This redevelopment is a cornerstone of the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN) project, aiming to transform the city into a premier aviation hub for Central India. Under the phased development plan, GNIAL targets a significant capacity expansion to handle up to 30 million passengers annually. The project is expected to draw substantial private capital, ensuring that the airport features world-class infrastructure and modernized passenger amenities while significantly boosting regional connectivity for the Vidarbha region.

Beyond passenger travel, the modernization focuses heavily on enhancing cargo handling capabilities, leveraging Nagpur’s strategic central location. By integrating advanced logistics infrastructure, the project is set to stimulate economic growth and create employment opportunities across Maharashtra. This development marks the final step in a multi-year process, transitioning airport operations to a specialized joint venture capable of delivering high-efficiency services and fostering industrial expansion in the region.

HYDERABAD. Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri K. Rammohan Naidu shared a clear and ambitious vision for India’s aerospace future at the Wings India 2026 summit held at Begumpet Airport in Hyderabad. Speaking on January 29, he said that India is moving beyond being only a user of aviation services and is now aiming to become a global hub for aircraft design, manufacturing, financing and maintenance. He noted that this shift will help address long-standing gaps in the country’s aviation and aerospace ecosystem.

The Minister explained that a strong aviation sector needs a complete and supportive ecosystem, not isolated efforts. He highlighted India’s young population and growing middle class as key drivers of aviation demand. While domestic aircraft manufacturing faced challenges in the past, he said India has made significant progress in recent years, and the global industry now sees the country as a credible manufacturing destination.

Shri Rammohan Naidu also stressed the government’s focus on regional connectivity. Under the UDAN scheme, nearly 100 airports have become operational, benefiting millions of passengers. A renewed phase of the programme aims to connect 120 destinations and serve about 40 million passengers over the next three years. To support future growth and the entry of new airlines, the government is standardising pilot training through a performance-based ranking system for flying schools to meet the expected demand for around 30,000 pilots.

Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Shri Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka echoed these views and said India’s shift from being a buyer to a creator in aerospace is already underway. He highlighted Hyderabad’s strong aerospace ecosystem, noting that beyond incentives, the region offers high productivity and expanding facilities in areas such as aircraft engine maintenance, manufacturing and drone technology. Both leaders emphasised the shared goal of building an Indian aviation industry that serves not only domestic needs but also competes successfully at the global level.
