The actor was accompanied by wife Jaya Bachchan and son Abhishek Bachchan at the ceremony. The 77-year-old actor, who skipped this year’s National Film Awards ceremony due to health issues, received the award from President Ram Nath Kovind at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. After receiving the award, Amitabh Bachchan said,”Jab iss puruskar ki ghoshna hui to mere mann mein ek sandeh utha. Ki kya kahin ye sanket hai mere liye ki bhai sahab aapne bahut kaam kar liya, ab ghar baith ke aaram kar lijiye. Kyunki abhi bhi thoda kaam baki hai jise mujhe poora karna hai.”

In September, this year, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar announced that Mr Bachchan will be awarded with the prestigious award. “The legend Amitabh Bachchan who entertained and inspired for 2 generations has been selected unanimously for Dadasahab Phalke Award. The entire country and international community is happy. My heartiest Congratulations to him,” Prakash Javadekar tweeted.

The 92-year-old composer, best known for his music in classic films such as Kabhi Kabhie and Umrao Jaan, passed away after prolonged illnesses at a hospital here on Monday.

In his last days, Khayyam was suffering from various age related ailments. On July 28, 2019 Khayyam was admitted to Sujay Hospital in Juhu, Mumbai due to lung infection. He died on 19 August 2019 at 9:30 PM (IST) following a cardiac arrest at the age of 92.

In a tweet, the PM said: “The country will remain grateful to Khayyam Sahab for giving us some of the most memorable compositions, which will be remembered forever. He will also be remembered for his humanitarian gestures to support upcoming artists. His demise is extremely saddening.”
