NEW DELHI. GMR Airports has completed twenty years of its initial thirty-year concession period for managing Delhi Airport, paving the way for a massive infrastructure transformation over the next few years. Group chairman GBS Raju announced that an automated air train will be operational at the airport within thirty months, targeting completion by 2029. Additionally, Terminal 3 is slated to receive a brand-new expansion called Pier E.

The introduction of Pier E will trigger a major shift in airport operations, as all passenger traffic from Terminal 2 will be relocated to the new facility. Once this transition is complete, the 1986-era Terminal 2 will be retired and abandoned, with the future utilization of the vacated site to be determined later based on prevailing air traffic trends. Looking further ahead, the current contract allows GMR the possibility of securing a second thirty-year concession period spanning from 2036 to 2066, which remains subject to approval by the government in 2036.

NEW DELHI. The Union Cabinet has approved the revamped UDAN 2.0 scheme with a budget of Rs 28,840 crore to expand regional air connectivity over the next decade. The plan includes developing 100 airports by upgrading existing unserved airstrips and building 200 helipads, especially in remote, hilly, and island regions, to improve emergency and healthcare access. It also supports procurement of indigenous aircraft, such as HAL helicopters and planes, and provides financial aid to airlines for operating in less-connected areas. The scheme aims to make air travel affordable, boost connectivity to Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, and promote “Make in India,” building on the success of the original UDAN launched in 2016.

NEW DELHI. India has officially become the world’s third-largest domestic aviation market, with airports now handling over 5 lakh passengers daily thanks to the success of the UDAN scheme. To support this massive growth and ensure air travel remains inclusive and passenger-centric, new directives have been issued to enhance the flying experience. These include making 60% of seats free of charge, ensuring families are seated together, and providing affordable dining via UDAN Yatri Cafes alongside amenities like “Flybraries” and free Wi-Fi. Furthermore, stricter enforcement of passenger rights during delays and transparent norms for carrying specialized luggage, such as musical instruments and pets, are being implemented to prioritize traveler convenience and transparency.
