NEW DELHI. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has launched an investigation into an Air India Airbus A320, registration VT-EXO, operating flight AI 2379 from Phuket to Delhi, after the aircraft experienced a sudden altitude variation of around 300 feet during cruise on August 4. The aircraft stabilised and landed safely in Delhi. The incident resulted in injuries to 20 passengers and four cabin crew members. The flight was carrying 137 passengers, including three infants, and eight crew members.

The investigation was initiated following information received from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), in accordance with applicable provisions and ICAO protocols. France’s BEA, as the investigation authority of the State of Design, along with technical representatives of Airbus, is assisting the AAIB by providing relevant technical information and design documentation. Investigators are examining aircraft systems, recorded flight data, operational and maintenance records, medical information and human factors, besides interviewing people associated with the occurrence.

The AAIB has cautioned against drawing conclusions from isolated or unverified information while the investigation is underway. The bureau said all available evidence would be examined comprehensively to determine the circumstances and contributing factors and to identify appropriate safety measures to prevent similar occurrences. It also emphasised that certain investigation records, statements and medical information are protected and confidential. A preliminary report will be issued within the stipulated timeframe, with further information to be released at the appropriate stage.

NEW DELHI. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has clarified that reports claiming the investigation into the Air India Flight AI-171 accident has been finalized are incorrect and speculative. The investigation remains ongoing, and no conclusive findings have been reached at this stage. Conducted strictly under the Aircraft (Investigation of Accidents and Incidents) Rules, 2025, and in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 obligations, the process is technical and evidence-based, focusing on identifying root causes and improving safety. The preliminary report released earlier provided factual information available at that time, and the final investigation report, which will include conclusions and safety recommendations, will be published only after the investigation’s completion, following international norms. The AAIB urges media outlets to exercise restraint and avoid premature speculation, as unverified reports can cause public anxiety and undermine the integrity of the ongoing investigation. The bureau remains committed to transparency, procedural integrity, and upholding the highest standards of aviation safety.
