In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Union  Minister of State for Personnel Jitendra Singh disclosed that 2,834 positions remain vacant across India’s premier All India Services—the IAS, IPS, and IFoS. According to the latest Civil List, the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) faces the largest deficit with 1,300 unfilled posts against a sanctioned strength of 6,877. The Indian Forest Service (IFoS) is the most severely affected by proportion, with 1,029 vacancies across 3,193 sanctioned roles (a 32.2% vacancy rate), while the Indian Police Service (IPS) reports 505 vacancies. Regionally, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra have the highest administrative gaps, with the AGMUT cadre also showing a significant shortfall. These figures highlight persistent recruitment and retention challenges across the country’s top administrative framework.
