Mrs Srivastava has still not been found and it is feared that she may be dead, he further said.

A team of the National Disaster Response Force, or NDRF, is working to rescue the trapped people. Visuals show rescuers in bright orange jackets installing a ladder to reach the upper floors of the building.

The incident happened late on Thursday night when Akash Mukhopadhyay, 20, while taking a turn, rammed his black sedan into the wall of the club in the posh Golf Garden area, the sources said.

Locals claimed many people had a narrow escape as the vehicle was being driven at a breakneck speed. The car crashed into the boundary wall, breaking a portion of it, with the driver trapped inside.

There was no report of any injury as several people present at the spot scampered to safety on time, the sources said quoting eyewitnesses.

Mr Mukhopadhyay came out of the car unscathed with the help of his father, who rushed out of their apartment nearby on hearing the commotion, the sources said.

“Investigation is going on and the man is being questioned,” a source at the police station said.

In a tweet, Ms Ganguly said the law should take its own course.

The girl and her family met with an accident  on Sunday in Raebareli in which two of her family members dead. The teen and her lawyer are in hospital.

The state police chief said she is out of danger. He also added that preliminary investigations indicate that it was an accident, but they are open to a CBI investigation if the family wants.

Kuldeep Sengar – a four-time legislator who represents Bangermau in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly  has been in the jail in rape case .

“I have got to know that the lawmaker got it done. He is inside… he has a phone inside (the jail). He is doing everything sitting inside the jail,” the teen’s mother told reporters. “Sengar is in jail but his men aren’t. He and his men were threatening us… We want justice.”

It later turned out that the truck had its number plate scrubbed with black paint. The security detail that the girl was meant to have, was also not accompanying her.

State police chief OP Singh police said prima facie, it was an accident, but they will support the family if they want a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Asked why the number plate was blacked out, the police chief said they are investigating the matter. The driver and his helper have been arrested and their call records are being probed, he added. “Every angle is being investigated, but prima facie, it appears to be an accident,” he said.

The police are also investigating why the security persons – provided to the girl after the rape — did not accompany her. “Our information suggests the security wasn’t with them today, it seems they refused it,” said another police officer, MP Verma.

The girl has alleged that in June 2017, she was sexually assaulted by the lawmaker when she went to his Unnao home with a relative, to seek a job.

Three large teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are at the site, looking for survivors. The area, full of dilapidated buildings on narrow lanes, was also flooded in heavy rain in the past weeks.

Ten ambulances and fire trucks are parked some distance away from the building as the lanes are too narrow for them to enter.

“We heard a loud noise. Everybody shouted, ‘building is falling, building is falling’. I ran. It felt like a big earthquake,” a teenager who saw the building fall told.

“I saw bodies… There were some seven-eight families in the building,” another eyewitness told.

The building housing a small eatery and a small guest house collapsed following heavy rains on Sunday afternoon when 30 Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) of Assam Rifles, all from the nearby Dagshai cantonment, were eating lunch there.

Nearly 15 civilians, including the eatery’s staff, were also present inside the building on Nahan-Kumarhati Road near Solan, some 55km away from Chandigarh.

The dead now includes six soldiers of the Indian Army and the wife of the building’s owner, according to officials. The dead JCOs have been identified as Raj Kishore, Balwinder Singh, Vinod, Ajit Kumar, Pardeep Chand and Yogesh and the woman as Archana Devi.

Nearly 12 more people, including seven soldiers, were still feared trapped in the building. Twenty-seven people, including 17 soldiers and 10 civilians, have been rescued from the debris.

AS Per Hindustan times National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) official Ajay Verma, who is involved in the rescue operations, said the bodies retrieved from the debris were badly crushed. “We are praying for some life in the debris,” Verma said.

As a team of the army and NDRF staff continued to search for survivors beneath the debris, inconsolable cries of the family members of those stuck inside could be heard as a body was pulled out at about 3am on Monday.

This building was constructed in 2009 and a floor was added to it recently. An FIR (first information report) against the owner has already been lodged.

Chief minister Jairam Thakur has already ordered a probe into the incident and is likely to visit the site later in the day.
