The Union Cabinet cleared the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) on December 4. The Bill is now set to be tabled in Parliament for consideration and passage.the Bill could be introduced in Parliament next week.

The Bill seeks to amend Citizenship Act, 1955, to grant Indian citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists and Parsis from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan after seven years of residence in India even if they do not have any document.

It was passed by the 16th Lok Sabha on January 8. However, it was not tabled in the Rajya Sabha and had later lapsed.

BJP have insisted that minorities from the three countries, which include a significant number of Hindus, should be granted Indian citizenship.

The opposition has raised objection over the Bill. Many political parties, including BJP allies especially in the northeast have openly raised concerns.

The All Assam Students Union (AASU) said the proposed legislation could affect the indigenous people of the northeast. The Indian National Congress, Trinamool Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), among others, have opposed the bill, claiming that citizenship cannot be given on the basis of religion.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah had, on December 3, held discussions with representatives of students’ bodies and civil society groups of Assam on the proposed legislation, according to news agency PTI. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was also present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on December 3, asked its Members of Parliament (MPs) to be present in Parliament in the coming days.e the frequency of flight operation – The Selected Airline Operator (SAO) would be allowed to change the frequency of flight operation, during the tenure of flight operation of the given route, provided that the total scheduled flight operation submitted as part of the Technical Proposal, is conformed and adhered to within a period of one year.

Inclusion of helicopter and sea plane operation under NSOP license – The operation of helicopter and sea plane would be allowed under this round.

A total of 3,11,21,004 persons have been found eligible for inclusion in last NRC leaving out 19,06,657 persons, including those who did not give their claims. Those not satisfied with the outcome can file an appeal before Foreigners Tribunals, said Prateek Hajela, State Coordinator, NRC.

The purpose of releasing the NRC list is to find whether a person residing in Assam is actually an Indian or a foreigner.

Here is how you can check your name in last Assam NRC list

Security was tightened across the state ahead of the publication of the NRC list. As a precautionary measure, fifty-one companies of the Central Armed Paramilitary Force (CAPF) had been deployed in various parts of the state. Section 144 of CrPC has been clamped in Dispur, where the state Secretariat and Assembly complexes are located. Prohibitory orders have been clamped in vulnerable areas like Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur and Khetri. Prohibitory orders are already in place in Dispur since August 28 and will stay until further notice.

The publication of the last NRC list – a sensitive political issue – is likely to stir up a huge gamut of reactions involving many of the stakeholders. Barring AASU, all major political parties, including Congress and AIUDF, have expressed fear that names of many genuine Indian citizens might be left out while those of the illegal foreigners may be included.

Keeping in view the far-reaching implications of the move, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has called upon the people of the state to keep up peace and tranquillity.

Ahead of the publication of the NRC list, the Ministry of Home Affairs has also urged people not to believe in rumours.

A total of 3,11,21,004 persons found eligible for inclusion in last NRC leaving out 19,06,657 persons including those who did not send their claims. Those not satisfied with the outcome can file an appeal before Foreigners Tribunals, says Prateek Hajela, State Coordinator, NRC.
