Ms Ashwini Bhide, the managing director (MD) of Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) was transferred by the Maharashtra government in a reshuffle of bureaucrats in Maharashtra .confirming the development Bhide told to NEWS MANTRA transfer is an inevitable part of our profession. Getting opportunity to work passionately for 5 long years and taking the project to a certain level was a matter of luck. And I am grateful.
Ranjit Singh Deol, so far vice chairman and managing director of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation, will replace her. Deo is an IAS officer of 1998 batch

As MD of MMRC, she was at the forefront of implementing the Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ Mumbai Metro 3 project. Promoted earlier this month as principal secretary, Bhide’s transfer was a matter of time as Aaditya Thackeray, state environment minister and son of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, had publicly demanded her removal.

Her vociferous defence of felling of tress to pave way for the proposed Aarey metro car shed project had ruffled more than a few feathers.

Bhide would often tweet pictures of the ongoing metro project, an exercise that won her many admirers and a few detractors. Her stout defence of the Metro car shed project and humble but stern counters to green activists and other opponents of the infrastructure left few in doubt that her days at MMRC were numbered after the Aghadi came to power in end-November.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said he has ordered a review of all on-going development projects in the state, including the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train and Aarey metro car shed .

The bullet train project has faced stiff opposition from farmers and tribes on land aquisation .

“This government is of the common man. Like you asked now, yes, we will review the bullet train (project). Have I stayed the bullet train project like Aarey car shed? No, I haven’t,” he told reporters .

The state government will also come out with a white paper on the financial condition of the state, Mr Thackeray said.

He said the state government, which has a debt of nearly Rs five lakh crore, is firm on giving unconditional loan waivers to farmers.

Meanwhile netizens took to Twitter to thank the government and Uddhav for the move. Just a day after taking over, Uddhav took the call to halt the Mumbai metro car shed project.

Not only this, on Sunday, he announced that the state government has ordered the withdrawal of all cases filed against environmentalists during the agitations against the construction of Aarey metro car shed. Uddhav took to Twitter to announce his decision and wrote, “When the trees were cut in the middle of the night, Mumbaikars agitated against the decision. They were detained & charged. I have given orders to take back all the charges filed against them.”

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MP Supriya Sule and MLA Jitendra Ahwad also tweeted to thank the government “on stopping the further erosion of ground cover at Aarey”.

Gujrat MLA Jignesh Mewani wrote A very welcome decision from @OfficeofUT to drop the charges against activists and students. The next step should be to declare Aarey a forest and to stop all ‘development projects’ inside the Eco-Sensitive Zone of Aarey.

The Supreme Court in its order says that no more trees should be cut in the colony. The top court also records an undertaking by Maharashtra government assuring that no more trees will be cut in Aarey. The SC also ordered the Mumbai police to release all the activists who were arrested over the past 2 days.

The Supreme Court was hearing the petitions demanding stay on the trees being felled in Mumbai’s Aarey Colony by a group of law students.

Meanwhile Section 144 of the IPC, that had been imposed around the site where trees were cut by Mumbai Metro authorities, has now been lifted. Roads leading to the colony were blocked and the entire area condoned off by police on Saturday after protesters reached the spot in large numbers as the metro authorities began cutting trees shortly after the Bombay High Court ruled in its favour.

The Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the tree felling in Mumbai’s Aarey colony and decided to hold a special sitting today after it converted a representation by a group of law students into a Public Interest Litigation. The top court has also formed a special bench for urgent hearing of the case. Supreme Court judges are on vacation for Dussehra.

The Supreme Court asked the Maharashtra government,”Tell us how many saplings you planted. How have they grown? What’s the status of your forests?” The top court’s questions come after Mumbai Metro on Sunday claimed that it had planted 24,000 saplings in to replace the trees that have been felled. The SC also asked the state government to produce a compulsory afforestation report.
