As part of its commitment to conserve water resources through adoption of sustainable practices, SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has gone one step ahead with the inauguration of the initiative to reuse the water treated in the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) for gardening and road cleaning inside the Plant. The facility was inaugurated by Mr. S R Suryawanshi, ED (Works), on 4th September 2024 in the presence of Mr. P S Kannan, CGM (EMD), Mr. Ravi Ranjan, CGM (Design & Shops), Mr. Raj Kishore Muduli, CGM (Electrical), Mr. M N V S Prabhakar, CGM (Services), Mr. D K Bhanja, CGM (Power Distribution), Ms. Asha Kartha, CGM (Safety & Fire Services), Mr. Hiralal Mohapatra, CGM (Utilities & Environment), Mr. Debajit Rabha, GM In-charge (WMD), along with other officers and employees of the department.
The initiative is part of a broader effort to achieve Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) within the plant. Notably, a 4 MLD Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) has been installed inside the RSP premises under the ZLD project. Currently, treated effluent from this STP flows into a lagoon for natural oxidation before being discharged into the river Brahmani. To further utilize the treated water and comply with statutory guidelines, the Water Management Department conceptualized a scheme to use this water in various gardens and for road cleaning within RSP.
Under this project, STP treated water is pumped from the STP to Treatment System-1 using submersible pumps through a 200 mm diameter pipeline spanning almost 3 km. All major gardens along the route have been equipped with suitable tappings for using the treated water. The project, executed by the Water Management Department, was completed in approximately four months at a cost of about Rs. 2.44 Crores.
