SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant Hospital Performs Difficult Cervical Spine Surgery Successful

Ispat General Hospital of SAIL, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) has achieved yet another milestone in advanced surgical care with the successful treatment of a 59 year old male patient who sustained serious spinal trauma following a fall on 3rd May, 2025.

SAIL Rourkela Steel Plant Hospital Performs Difficult Cervical Spine Surgery SuccessfulAfter initial management at Rourkela Government Hospital for four days, he got himself reviewed  at IGH on 07-05-2025  and was admitted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. While being admitted in the hospital the patient was found to be suffering with severe stiffness of the body, inability to stand or walk independently, difficulty in rising from bed, dressing and eating.

Under the care of Dr. Manoj Kumar Deo, Senior Consultant Neurosurgery (M&HS) comprehensive evaluation including MRI and X-ray of the cervical spine revealed the cause of his condition: cervical disc disease coupled with abnormal mobility of the cervical vertebrae.

The prognosis and surgical requirement were thoroughly explained to the patient and his wife. Upon receiving informed consent, the surgical team led by Dr. Manoj Kumar Deo, Senior Consultant Neurosurgery successfully performed the procedure. The anaesthesia care was administered  by Dr. Sanjukta Panigrahi, Additional CMO, Anaesthesia and ICU. The operating theatre was efficiently managed by Sister Archana, while dedicated post-operative care was provided by Sister Gouri, Sister Sasmita, Sister  Ekta, and other committed nursing staff.

In the post-operative period, the patient exhibited significant recovery. Initially requiring support from two people to walk, he progressed to walking with assistance from only one person. Overall, he showed approximately 40% improvement during his hospital stay and continues to improve with ongoing care.

This case marks the sixth such complex cervical spine surgery conducted at the IGH  within the last 10 months, a notable achievement given the rarity of such procedures in the region in the past.
