NTPC Accelerates Capacity Expansion with ₹7 Lakh Crore Investment Plan

NEW DELHI. NTPC Limited is significantly expanding its power generation portfolio, with 16,500 MW of new coal-based capacity and around 15,000 MW of renewable energy projects currently under construction. The company is also diversifying into emerging segments such as nuclear power, battery storage, and green hydrogen to strengthen its long-term energy strategy.

With a planned capital expenditure of nearly ₹7 lakh crore through 2032, NTPC aims to build a balanced and future-ready energy mix, supporting India’s growing power demand while accelerating the transition towards cleaner and sustainable energy sources.

NTPC  reported a strong operational performance in FY26, generating 432.2 billion units of electricity and adding a record 9,619 MW capacity during the year. The company also expanded its renewable energy portfolio by 5,488 MW across solar, wind, and pumped storage projects. Coal production stood at 48.65 million metric tonnes, registering a 6.22% year-on-year growth, while power trading rose 13% to 46.52 billion units, improving electricity access across the country.

NTPC also achieved 105% ash utilisation, reinforcing its focus on sustainability and efficient resource management. The company currently operates over 89 GW of installed capacity, with 32 GW under construction, and aims to reach 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW from renewable sources. It is also expanding into new areas such as green hydrogen, e-mobility, battery storage, and waste-to-energy to support India’s clean energy transition.
