New Delhi: Aiming a major attack on the Narenda Modi led BJP government in centre, Congress president Rahul Gandhi today called on the people of the country to oppose the proposed changes in the Right to Information Act (RTI) by the government. Apart from Gandhi, many activists have strongly opposed the proposed changes to the RTI Act which pertains to the salaries and services of chief information commissioner and information commissioner. “Every Indian has the right to know the truth. The BJP believes the truth must be hidden from the people and they must not question people in power. The changes proposed to the RTI will make it a useless Act. They must be opposed by every Indian,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted with the hashtag #saveRTI.
Gandhi’s reaction comes after the government said on Wednesday that it is considering a proposal to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. RTI is one of the landmark laws made during the UPA regime led by the Congress prior to BJP coming to power in 2014 with whopping majority.
In a written reply to Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Minister of state for personnel Jitendra Singh said that a notice of intention has been given to introduce The Right to Information (Amendment) Bill, 2018, in the Rajya Sabha for consideration and passage during the current session of Parliament.
