Sensex up by 174 points

The benchmark BSE Sensex climbed 174 points to 31,885.17 in the opening trade. NSE Nifty was up 34 points to 9861. The rupee turned weak by 2 paise to 64.35 against the US dollar in early trade today. Yesterday, the rupee saw a marginal two paise rise in its value at 64.33 a dollar.

Kharif Crop

Kharif Crop sowing crosses 563 lakh hectare area

Kharif crops have been sown in over 563 lakh hectare till date as against 521 lakh hectare last year. It is nearly 42 lakh hectare more than last year figure. 

Crop sowing data released by the Agriculture Ministry, reveals that the rice has been sown in over 125 lakh hectare which is about five lakh hectare more than the last year. Over 74 lakh hectare area has been covered under the cultivation of pulses which is more than 14 lakh hectare of the sown area under the crop last year.

The coarse cereals have been sown in over 113 lakh hectare, oilseeds in nearly 104 lakh hectare and cotton in over 90 lakh hectare.

Bank Merger

Government can do some more, merger, work on offer

In order to reduce the NPA and increase the mobility of the banks, the federal government is working on the proposal for the merger of some more banks. By which their number may decrease from 21 to 10-12. It plans to build 3-4 banks of global size. According to media reports, Punjab and Sindh Bank and Andhra Bank will continue to be independent entities and some medium sized banks will also be present.
