KOCHI. Buoyed by the success of the Kochi Water Metro, which has ferried over 40 lakh passengers since its launch in April 2023, the Union Shipping Ministry is now planning to replicate the model in 21 other locations, including Goa, Ahmedabad, Srinagar, Lakshadweep, and Guwahati, according to Loknath Behera, Managing Director of Kochi Water Metro. A feasibility study has already been completed in Mumbai, and similar assessments are underway in other identified cities. Behera emphasized that the Water Metro is not only a cost-effective and eco-friendly mode of transport, but also highly popular among commuters.
Highlighting its advantages over traditional metro rail systems, Behera stated that the electric ferry system produces minimal pollution and offers greater sustainability. Kochi currently operates 20 electric boats, with plans to expand the fleet to 78, all being manufactured by Cochin Shipyard. While challenges remain in adapting the model to different urban geographies, Behera remains optimistic that Kochi-like Water Metro systems could be operational in several Indian cities within three to four years, with active involvement from state governments.
