New Delhi: India has moved up to the 9th position in the world in terms of total forest area, as reported in the Global Forest Resources Assessment (GFRA) 2025 released by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Bali. The country has also maintained its 3rd position globally in annual forest area gain, highlighting its continued progress in sustainable forest management and ecological restoration.

Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav shared the achievement on social media, saying, “India is Top 9 in the Global Forest Assessment 2025. Here is a reason to rejoice for all Indians. We have achieved 9th rank in terms of forest area at the global level as compared to 10th spot in the previous assessment. In the previous FAO assessment, India ranked 10th. The rise to the 9th spot reflects steady expansion of green cover through sustained government and community initiatives. The Minister said that this progress reflects the success of government policies under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on forest protection, afforestation, and community-driven environmental action.

The Prime Minister’s call for ‘Ek Ped Ma Ke Naam’ and his emphasis on environmental awareness have encouraged citizens across the country to actively engage in tree plantation and protection efforts. This growing public participation is building a strong collective sense of responsibility for a greener and more sustainable future.

According to the Environment Ministry, this recognition comes as a result of coordinated planning, protection measures, and large-scale plantation drives undertaken by both the central and state governments. The achievement reinforces India’s position as a leader among developing nations in advancing conservation and climate resilience through people-led and policy-driven efforts.
